Because the current owners of both clubs want a shared stadium.

A new place enables new things.
If i had the choice to avoid costs for destruction i would chose a new site.

Inter and Milan unveil proposals on next week.

The representatives of FC Inter Milan and AC Milan will meet the leaders of the political parties present in the City Council of Milan to present further details of the feasibility study submitted on July 10.

"The meeting is the further confirmation of the transparency of the clubs regarding a project that we consider of great value for the city, for future generations and for the fans", said the CEO of Inter, Alessandro Antonello.

The tomorrow's appointment at 4PM "intensifies a constructive dialogue process started in recent months with the city administration" said AC Milan President, Paolo Scaroni.

"On next week, September 24th, we will present the finalist projects of the new multifunctional district also to the citizens and to all the supporters to whom, from a participatory perspective, we will ask to give us their suggestions on the projects presented" said Scaroni.

‘Cathedral vs. wedding rings’ – the competing designs…

One of the designs contains glass spires and lets a lot of light in, in tribute to the iconic Milan duomo, while the other resembles two wedding rings that cross over – the report claims.

The two firms competing for the project are the US giant Populous against the Italian-American consortium Manica-Cmr, and both designs include towers and buildings around the stadium.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) back up those claims, adding that the Populous is inspired by the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and ‘would play a lot on lights and glass, allowing different colours depending on the team involved’.

The concept is that of a “Cathedral of football”, the report continues, with galleries around the central body whose arches recall the two masterpieces of Piazza Duomo.

The Manica-Cmr design is ‘equally beautiful and modern’, but more traditional: its hallmark would be two huge rings that cross, to symbolise the coexistence of the two clubs in the same house.

Part of the facade could be dedicated to the fans, La Gazzetta continues, with the possibility of inserting names and perhaps photos on the “bricks” of the plant.

First renders of the two proposals, courtesy of CorSport via Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comm...images_of_the/)

Personally I prefer the first design. The glass one from Populous looks underwhelming, and I don't want to imagine the kind of shadows that would plague the playing surface in day games.

Presentation of plans for new San Siro postponed on September 27

AC Milan and FC Inter Milan will no longer present their plans for a new stadium development on September 24, a report claims. AC Milan President Paolo Scaroni essentially confirmed on Wednesday that the two clubs are proceeding with plans to construct a new stadium next to the current San Siro.

La Gazzetta dello Sport provided an insight as two what the two competing designs look like, with Populous competing against Progetto CMR-Manica. Il Corriere della Sera then provided a financial breakdown of the €1.23billion that will be pumped into the construction of the stadium and the project to gentrify the area around it.

However, the same outlet have delivered an update on the situation by claiming that the proposed date for the presentation of the project to the Council (September 24) has now been postponed. Instead, it will now take place on Friday 27 September, and during the week there will be crucial meetings between the relevant board to decide whether the new stadium can be considered as "work of public interest for the city".

Is a retractable roof here one of the design requirements?

Here is another image of what the new San Siro stadium will look like. This time it is the project of Populous, which provides a parallelepiped-shaped structure, covered with glass.

The Populous's plan for Inter and Milan's proposed new stadium will remind fans of both clubs of the city's historical, famous Duomo according to a report from Corriere dello Sport. But the design also reminds some architectural features of the old San Siro. The below image shows that the new stadium will be a parallelogram covered in glass with a real futuristic design to it, which is a far cry from the other plan still in the race which has a more traditional look. The spires will change colors during the events. The transformation of the surrounding areas includes park, offices, restaurants, boutiques, museum, entertainment, hotel, services and more. The proposal also includes three buildings with heights of 143, 97 and 68 meters.

San Siro demolished? Mayor responds to the criticisms.

"To say 'let's build a new stadium and leave San Siro there' is a wrong choice. Imagine the sadness of an empty San Siro, while the new stadium has lights, great attention, and visibility. This is not possible. As first option, I'd like to work on the redevelopment of San Siro, but I cannot avoid listening to the requests advanced by the clubs" said the Mayor, while responding to those who are criticizing the plan submitted by AC Milan and FC Inter Milan. "I am pleased that we are moving towards good transparency, in respect of citizenship. Football and the San Siro are such delicate issues that citizenship must be involved. But the clubs have the right to decide though".

So it seems that the mayor wants to keep the existing stadium and would prefer that the clubs remodel it, but at the same time, if the clubs aren't interested in that proposal, than he'd have to entertain a new stadium. So it looks like the clubs are pushing through on development of a new stadium project on their own without really involving the city, though if the city owns the land where the clubs want to build, perhaps the clubs are being too presumptive here.

These things usually work better when the city and clubs are on the same page from the get-go.

^Going by what IThomas posted above, the mayor sounds like he's very much behind the the idea of building a new stadium.

The Mayor supports the idea of building a new stadium. And certainly, the city administration will have to work together with the clubs to implement the project.

But...

The Mayor's statements have only one meaning: the clubs must take the "responsibility" for the demolition of San Siro (a stadium which has a special place in many hearts). Or in other words, if the most nostalgic citizens/fans will have to say "goodbye" to the Meazza, then they have to blame AC Milan and FC Inter Milan, because both have preferred this solution rather than redevelop the "old, dear stadium" (just as he "suggested" at the beginning).

The Mayor and Councilor for Urban Planning welcome the realization of modern, innovative projects across the city. We'll see, however, what the City Council says about the issue.

I realize the San Siro has a lot of history, but at a certain point, nostalgia can't be given too much weight. Sometimes the simple memories are enough, and practicality and realism have to set in as time moves on, and the current stadium becomes more and more outdated. Given how easily accessible sports have become through a variety of means: television, internet, phones, where creature comforts are available, the modern model for stadiums places an emphasis on lower capacities with more attention to amenities and premium spaces, rather than just cramming as many people as you can into the stadium. Hopefully the football fans in Milan come around and get behind the idea.
