NCP wants Dadar railway station renamed

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is part of Maharashtra’s ruling Congress-led coalition, wants the city’s important Dadar railway junction to be renamed ‘Chaitya Bhoomi’ in memory of the late Dalit icon BR Ambedkar, a party official said on Monday.

Chaitya Bhoomi, barely two kilometres from Dadar railway station, is the place where Ambedkar was cremated on December 6, 1956. Later, converted into a national monument, lakhs of Dalits from all over the country converge here to pay homage to Ambedkar on his death anniversary.

The proposal is likely to be taken up as a resolution at the NCP’s Convention on Rights of Backward Class People scheduled on June 10 as part of the party’s 11th anniversary celebrations here, the official added.

State Congress president Manikrao Thackeray stated that the demand was originally raised by the Congress. “Originally it was the Congress’ demand. We had raised the issue a year ago, before anyone else,” he said.

Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar said the party will not oppose the move to rename Dadar as Chaitya Bhoomi if such a proposal comes up.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray blasted NCP leaders, saying that they should stay away from such politics. “Changing the name does not provide additional facilities to the people or does not solve any problem. If the NCP is so bothered about Dr Ambedkar, then why can’t they demand his Ambedkar’s photo on Rs500 notes?” asked Thackeray, adding that his party will oppose any such move to change the name.

Proposed MFCs to be non-profit venture: Trivedi

NEW DELHI: Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi today said the proposed Multi-Functional Complexes, aimed to provide passenger facilities, like shelter and food, should be a non-profiteering venture.

"Mainly the concept is that most of the passenger are 'aam admi'. The idea is not to make money or profit out of it," he said during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha.

The ministry has identified 11 railway stations in Maharashtra for the MFC project. "It is planned to provide budget hotel, subject to its market potential," he said.

Centre to appoint joint panel for railway projects

In a bid to expedite clearances and resolve issues involving railway projects planned for Mumbai and other areas in Maharashtra, the Centre has now decided to appoint a joint action committee, which will comprise officials from the Centre and the state.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan met railways minister Dinesh Trivedi in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss issues involving various pending railway projects. Trivedi took the decision during this meeting.

At the meeting, several pending projects, including one for the upgradation of Mumbai suburban network, provision of additional trains, and laying of new tracks, among others were discussed. Railway board chairman Vinay Mittal was also present at the meeting.

Indian Railways catering service collaborates with PSU oil companies

PUNE: An inter-deparmental collaboration is under way as the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, or IRCTC, the catering arm of the giant public sector undertaking is opening up stand alone cafes and restaurants at petrol pumps owned and operated by PSU oil companies.

For starters, IRCTC has opened the first such restaurant at a Hindustan Petroleum Corporation petrol pump at Loni, near Pune. It plans to rope in the other state-owned oil marketing companies, IOC and BPCL.

"Branding of these restaurants is expected to be unveiled shortly," said an IRCTC official, adding that they plan to open 60 such restaurants across the country by March 2012. A third of these restaurants are expected to be in Maharashtra and Gujarat, targeting the busy highways in the two states. The restaurants will utilise the open land at the petrol pumps of the three oil companies.

Audio-visual info system at Pune railway station

The Pune railway station has been provided with an innovative and passenger-friendly audio-visual system for information on train timings, platform numbers, and other important details. It is the first development of its kind in the Central Railway.

TVs, speakers

The information is displayed through 45 colour televisions, plasma screens and 100 speakers put up on the platforms, concourse and enquiry counters. The operation of the system has been awarded to an agency on a time-sharing basis, which means there is no expenditure of public money.

The agency shall disseminate information to passengers and also display advertisements. The initiative will also earn the Railways a certain amount of revenue. This will result in saving huge capital expenditure and also substantial saving towards staff costs.

CR to replicate idea

The system has received widespread appreciation and is being replicated at other major stations under the Central Railway. The Railways will also consider displaying public information advertisements related to the Railways and other social issues that NGOs and social organisations approach it with.

NEW INNOVATION BY WESTERN RAILWAY TO IMPROVE CATERING SERVICES

Western Railway has decided to introduce the scheme of ‘meal coupons’ for selling of standard meals and breakfast in the trains running with Pantry Cars.It has been decided to first start this scheme with Train No.12955/12956 Mumbai Central-Jaipur Superfast Express with effect from 1st December,2011.

The pre-printed meal coupons will be sold in advance by the Pantry Car staff to passengers who want to have standard breakfast, lunch, dinner etc. in this train. The passengers will make the payment and collect the coupons.These coupons will be exchanged by the passengers at the time of service of meals by the Pantry staff.

The meals tariffs and the menu items alongwith the quantity to be served have been printed on these coupons.It is expected that with the introduction of meal coupons, the cases of overcharging of meals will be eliminated.The passengers will also get all the menu items printed on the coupons.This will also cut out the practice of unauthorized hawking by outsiders.

Western Railway has also nominated one Senior Officer from Commercial Department who can be contacted on Mobile No. 9004490971 by the passengers travelling in this train in case of any complaint.

Recently Western Railway has taken over on-board catering service from Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation to provide quality services to its passenger at reasonable and affordable prices.

Western Railway is working towards providing better onboard experience for passengers and in recent past it has taken several steps such as better menu for catering in trains.

Area outside Pune rly station to be redeveloped

PUNE: The area outside the Pune railway station will be redeveloped to provide adequate parking space for vehicles and circulating area for passengers. Also, a proper queue system for autorickshaws will be in place in the next few months, while the drainage system will be improved to prevent flooding.

As part of the redevelopment works, the railways will also be carrying out repairs of all service roads in front of the station building, as well as the office of the divisional railway manager and other areas. The bad roads outside the station have been affecting the movement of passengers and vehicles, officials said.

Senior Railways officials, including Central Railways general manager, had conducted a surprise inspection visit a few months ago and had observed that the parking area outside the station needed improvement. Accordingly, the Railways has planned the redevelopment work to provide more space for parking.

The Railways has allowed the traffic police to start a traffic help-booth by which passengers can easily get autorickshaws and has also planned improvements in the circulating area of the pre-paid rickshaw stand.

Two years ago, the traffic branch had suggested a plan for improving the autorickshaw queue system at the station, but the plan could not be implemented. The traffic branch had then pointed out that the existing queue system was faulty and that a new system needs to be in place by which autorickshaws would drop passengers at the station and, if the drivers wished, they could either join the queue system or leave the station premises. The plan, the traffic branch had said, would reduce the congestion outside the station. Officials said that the Railways wants the traffic branch to take severe action against unauthorised parking of rickshaws and other vehicles outside the station.

The Railways also wants the PMC to complete the multi-storied parking lot near the station at the earliest so that parking problems outside the station would be minimised.

Officials said that there are plans afoot to spruce up the drainage system to prevent flooding in the rainy season.

Overburdened Pune railway station to get facelift

Central Railway plans to build elevated bus depot on city station premises on the lines of Thane and Mumbai

The Central Railway (CR) plans a major infrastructural revamp of Pune railway station in lieu of the ever-increasing rail traffic and influx of passengers. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference, CR General Manager (GM) S K Jain said that they plan to build elevated platforms for buses plying from the depot, which will have connecting skywalks and foot over Bridges (F0Bs), on the lines of bus depots in Thane and Andheri (Mumbai).

"We are trying to coordinate with local bodies like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) for the project," he said. The plan includes ramps for buses to climb and descend from the elevated decks and an auto stand right below. Effectively, the auto stand will come in the place of the Pune station bus depot, which currently has a stand on Maldhakka Road, infamous for traffic snarls.

Jain, who assumed office a fortnight ago, was on an official tour of all major stations under CR's jurisdiction. An important announcement made by Jain was about extending platform No. 6 on the stations to accommodate 32 coach trains.

Plan approved
"The project has already been approved and will be completed by March next year. About 187 trains ply from Pune everyday and the traffic has reached a saturation point. We are logging the daily train movements and other important statistics to mitigate the congestion and augment services," said Jain.

Talking about the revamp plan, Jain said that in other cities like Thane and Mumbai, the CR was coordinating with agencies such as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and completed several RoBs and other infrastructure.

"Such coordination has been lacking in Pune. We are work in close collaboration with these local bodies. The only way to reduce congestion is to go elevated like we did in Thane and Andheri in Mumbai. We are planning to build the bus depot on the parcel depot at the fag end of the first platform," he said.

Jain also added that around 56,000 railway vacancies were also approved to be filled in a recent meeting with Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi," he added.

Parel terminus plan to ease Dadar woes

Central Railway plans to develop Parel station into a terminus for some local trains. The aim is to decongest Dadar by shifting 57 services that originate and terminate there. The project will take three years to implement once it is approved.

A CR official insisted on the term terminal to describe the post-upgrade Parel station , saying that in railway parlance , terminus refers to big stations like CST.

According to the official, one of the reasons behind the plan is that Dadar does not have room for expansion . Not so with Parel. While Dadar in 2009-10 and 2010-11 received 87,712 and 81,743 passengers per day, the corresponding figures for Parel are 22,810 and 26,384. So, with the creation of more platforms-for which there is space-a sizeable chunk of passengers getting off at Dadar or boarding trains from there can be shifted to Parel.

"The move is aimed to divide passenger load equitably between Parel and Dadar ," the official said.

Parel is ideal to take the load off Dadar-a meeting point of the Central and Western lines-because commuters who change lines can get off at the station and take the over-bridge connecting it to Elphinstone Road, which is on the Western line. Another reason for upgrading Parel is that passenger discharge at the station has been increasing in recent years.

New Year gift: Dental clinics at rly stations

Ten railway stations across the city are set to become the hub of an innovative oral healthcare movement. In a couple of weeks, mobile clinics are likely to come up at CST, Churchgate, Grant Road, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Kurla, Andheri, Ghatkopar and Thane, inviting commuters to spare a few minutes.

Each booth, operational between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm, will be manned by four doctors, two of them seniors. Checkups and treatment such as teeth cleansing and gum care will be done at the booths itself; free of cost. Every patient will be registered for the purpose of creating a database, which could become the largest such info bank in the country.

The initiative is launched by Government Dental College & Hospital and Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation. More than 100 doctors from the hospital will be involved. When not attending to patients at the booths, they will be speaking to commuters regarding oral care and hygiene. Yes, please-don’t-spit lectures are part of the campaign.

Hospital dean Dr Mansingh Pawar said the proposal couldn’t have come at a better time. “There was absolutely no hesitation when MRVC approached us with the proposal. What better place than railway stations to educate people about dangers of ignoring oral care. More than 60 per cent of patients at our hospital are tobacco and gutkha users.”

He said the project could be the largest oral care programme in India. “It is absolutely wonderful to start on a common ground - the railway vikas corporation officials agreed a one-day or a one-week awareness programme can’t solve the problem. The initiative will continue at least for a year, and we will have free dental checkups and oral hygiene education,” he said.

Prakashrao Wazalvar, chief operations manager, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) said the number of stations is being worked out. “The formalities are being finalised; we will announce the stations that will have the booths soon,” he said.

The plan is to ensure commuters can’t ignore the booths. “There will be short documentaries highlighting the dangers of spitting. Diseases such as tuberculosis are spread through spitting. By changing our habits slightly, we can make the city a far more liveable,” Pawar said.

Railway officials said anti-spitting part excites them the most. A senior official said, “Year after year Railways spend millions cleaning paan and gutkha stains. If people are somehow convinced that they risk spreading diseases because of spitting, we could see a difference.”

MRVS submits memorandum to Prez

Highlights poor connectivity of Marathwada
Aurangabad, Feb 21: Marathwada Railway Vikas Samiti delegation led by its president Omprakash Verma met the President of India, Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 17.
During the meeting, the delegation not only brought to the notice of the President, the importance of Jalgaon-Aurangabad-Beed-Osmanabad-Solapur railway line but also the fact that Marathwada was put on the backburner in railway connectivity proposals.
Further the delegation highlighted the growth in trade and tourism the region will gain once it is connected with two different regions of the state. The president assured them that she would send the memorandum to the railway board. After receiving the survey report and other feedback from the railway board, she promised to do everything possible. Apart from others, the delegation comprised freedom fighter Tara Ladda. If the said project sees the light of the day, many destinations of historical, industrial and religious importance like Tuljapur, Kunthalgiri, Paithan, Aurangabad, Ajanta, Ellora, Jalgaon and others will have better connectivity and bigger economic role to play in the region.

Take Duronto to Delhi in 10 days

Commuters on the Mumbai-Delhi route will get a Duronto train service in the next ten days apart from a similar service to Allahabad whose inaugural run will take place on March 11 from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).
Durontooperates nonstop between the originating station and the final destination. Western Railway plans to run a bi-weekly Duronto between Mumbai and New Delhi on Monday and Tuesday at 11.15pm. The train will cover the distance in 16-17 hours. On March 11, the inaugural special run of the LTT-Allahabad Duronto will take place from LTT at 11.25am and arrive at Allahabad at 9.50am on the following day. Thereafter, the regular services will depart from Mumbai at 5.25pm every Monday and Friday and will arrive in Allahabad at 12.25pm on the following day. On its return journey, the train will leave Allahabad at 7.30pm every Tuesday and Saturday and will arrive at LTT at 2.50pm on the following day. Central Railway will also flag off a Pune-Ahmedabad triweekly Duranto Express and Superfast Rajya Rani Express between Manmad and LTT on March 11 and 10, respectively.
In the next ten days, WR will carry out inaugural runs of BDTS-Jammu Tavi Vivek Express and the Mumbai-Chandigarh Express that will depart on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 11.25pm.
Pantry pangs
Commuters of the Amritsar-Bandra terminus Paschim Express had to do without food from the pantry car following an altercation on Thursday night between the pantry car manager, Manoj Tripathi, and Government Railway Police of Rajasthan. The passengers had to go without food as Tripathi was detained and taken off the train at Bayana station after he allegedly refused to provide food to GRP personnel. TNN

Railways gives go-ahead to Pune-Nashik route

It took 16 years of follow-up by different agencies and people’s representatives for the government to sanction the works of the Pune-Nashik and Manmad-Indore railway routes.
Local MPs Sameer Bhujbal, Harishchandra Chavan and Pratap Sonawane along with Nashik Rail Parishad had made concerted efforts to press for the long-pending demand of these routes.

Pune-Nashik route
Three surveys of the Pune-Nashik route had projected the project as deficit venture.
However, a feasibility report presented by MP Bhujbal converted the -2.84% deficit project into +4.11 positive project. The earlier report had considered the 2001 population, the new report considered the 2011 population.

The new report also suggested that the private project of the Nashik-Sinnar railway route being prepared to carry coal for power generation for the SEZ project in Sinnar can be further extended. It also mentioned the linking of proposed international airport and industrial hub at Chakan, proposed SEZ at Rajgurunagar, air and sea cargo at Ojhar, Odha terminus and the agricultural trade from Ahmednagar and Nashik region will only benefit the railways.

The earlier route mentioned in the report was Pune–Begdewadi, whereas the new report mentions route covering Pune, Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Sangamner, Sinnar and Nashik. The total route is 262 kms and the projected cost is Rs1,899.64 crore. The Maharashtra government is ready to bear 50% cost of the project. Out of the 262 kms, 30 km-Nashik-Sinnar cost is borne by the private project and 30 km-Dehuroad Pune route is already existing.

The Pune-Nashik railway route will reduce the distance by about four hours. Presently, it takes nearly 6 hours to reach Pune by road and the proposed railway route reduces the distance to two hours. It will also benefit many tourist destinations along the route like Shivneri in Junnar, Aari telescope, Jyotirlinga at Bhimashankar, Ashtavinayak at Lenyadri and Jain Mandir at Pabal.

Manmad-Indore route
The Manmad-Indore railway route is an age-old demand. The route passes through Manmad, Malegaon, Dhule, Nardana, Shirpur, Sendhwa, Dhamnod, Mhow and Indore and entails cost of Rs1,600 crores. The Central government will bear 50% of the cost while governments of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will bear 25% each. The route will also be a corridor connecting north with south India.

MPs met PM
After the recent railway budget disappointed the people in the region, MPs from Nashik region, cutting across party lines, met the prime minister under the leadership of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar. Later, railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal announced sanctioning of work to begin for the two routes in the supplementary to budget in the Parliament on March 13, 2013.

Special Purpose Vehicle to take up Pune-Nashik line

PUNE: The Pune-Nashik new railway line will be taken up on priority basis by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be formed jointly by the Centre and state government.
