Upcoming auto cluster set to give impetus to industries in region’

Union commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis are set to inaugurate the Centre of Excellence (CoE) building in Waluj on July 2.

AURANGABAD: Union commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis are set to inaugurate the Centre of Excellence (CoE) building in Waluj on July 2. The work worth Rs 22 crore was carried out as part of the second phase of the Marathwada Auto Cluster (MAC) project. The first phase of the project has already been implemented successfully at a cost of Rs 21 crore.

"With rapid progress of the project, the city is finally realising its dream of having an MAC. The production work is already underway with the completion of first phase. The second phase is poised to give impetus to industrial growth and simultaneously help upgrade the city's infrastructure," said Ram Bhogale, president of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture (MACCIA).

Bhogale said, "Sitharaman and Fadnavis will inaugurate the CoE, which would be later dedicated to the public. MAC is the second such project in Maharashtra, which was launched in May 2010 under the Industrial Infrastructure Up-gradation Scheme (IIUS). The first one is in Pune. This is the first cluster where about 25 industries have rendered financial assistance to tune of Rs 12.24 crore."

"After a six-year struggle, the project kicked off with the Centre approving Rs 81.35 crore for the MAC in the Waluj industrial area, 20 km from here," said Mukund Kulkarni, former CMIA president. He said the MAC promises to attract investment to the city and the Marathwada region at large, thereby creating new business and job opportunities.

"With this project, centres with world-class software for designing products, components, etc, have been made available. These facilities will be available to all members of the auto cluster and other industries, as per the need. This facility will not only save time but the cost as well," said N Sriram, Marathwada zonal council chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

"The project has come up on 56,000 sq ft land. It will help attract new industries in the region. We believe it will definitely provide momentum to the growth and development of the region," said Munish Sharma, CMIA president.

"The primary objective is to improve the worthiness of domestic names in the international circuit. The aim is to establish a state-of-the-art common infrastructure facility at Waluj MIDC in a bid to improve the global competitiveness of the industrial units in Marathwada through innovative ideas," Sharma added.

President of Aurangabad Vyapari Mahasang Association Ajay Shah, Marathwada Association of Small Scale Industries and Agriculture (MASSIA) member Narayan Pawar and Aurangabad Industrial Suppliers' Association (AISA) president Satish Lonikar were also present on the occasion.

The Maharashtra government has selected Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad among 10 other cities in the state under the "Smart City" project, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said today.

Apurva Chandra, Principal Secretary of Industries and Power will mentor Aurangabad smart city.

Principal secy reviews 'smart city' preparations

TNN | Aug 22, 2015,

AURANGABAD: State principal secretary (Industries) Apurva Chandra on Friday reviewed preparations of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for the Union government's ambitious 'smart city project' . After finding a place in a list of ten cities shortlisted from Maharashtra, the state government recently appointed Chandra to guide and co-ordinate the civic body officials for the project.

During his visit to the city on Friday, municipal authorities put up presentations on various facilities and projects going on in the city.

Ramesh Pawar, additional municipal commissioner, said that it was Chandra's first visit after taking charge of the project. "As of now the civic body is completing formalities for appointment of a project management consultancy firm which will prepare a detailed project report. It is a very complex process but the principal secretary would guide the civic body in completing the process," he said.

Recently, a high-powered steering committee under the chairmanship of the state chief secretary selected Mumbai, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Pune& Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Thane, Amravati, Solapur, Kalyan-Dombivali and Aurangabad.

The state government will now send the list to the Centre, which will select 20 cities from a lot of 100 to develop them as smart cities. The selected cities will have to present proposals for being considered under the scheme. The presentations will be evaluated in the third phase by an agency identified by the Union government for further selection.

Now, AMC will have to improve infrastructure in the city in order to increase its chances of being selected for the project.

As per the guidelines of the Centre, the cities with smart solutions on 21 different areas such as e-governance and citizen services, waste management, water management; energy management, urban management and other similar fields will be shortlisted.

Aurangabad only city from Marathwada region in Centre's Smart City project

Niraj Chinchkhede,TNN | Aug 28, 2015,

AURANGABAD: The selection of Aurangabad in the central government's ambitious smart city project on Thursday has brought cheer to the city, especially at a time when the municipal corporation is struggling to develop civic amenities because of lack of funds.

Aurangabad is the only city from the Marathwada region selected for the project. Altogether 98 cities from across the country have found a place in the list declared by Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu. Names of two other cities will be announced later. Under the project, these cities would be developed for providing world-class infrastructure, sustainable environment and smart solutions.

As per the central government's guidelines, the cities with smart solutions on 21 different areas including e-governance and citizen services, along with waste, water, energy and urban management among other similar fields were shortlisted for the project.

Besides Aurangabad, other cities from the state in the Centre's list include Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Thane, Greater Mumbai, Amravati, Solapur, Nagpur, Kalyan-Dombivli and Pune.

The Centre has earmarked Rs 48,000 crore for the development of 100 smart cities. The municipal corporation, along with other selected civic bodies, would get Rs 2 crore each to prepare for the smart city project. In the first year, the government has proposed to give Rs 200 crore to every selected city to create a higher initial corpus.

However, the Centre's funds and matching contribution from the state government will meet only part of the project cost. The balance funds are expected to be mobilised from collection of users' fees, beneficiary charges and impact fees, land monetisation, debts, loans, etc.

The civic bodies can also generate funds by way of additional resources transferred due to acceptance of the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission.

The local body can adopt innovative finance mechanism such as municipal bonds, pooled finance mechanism and tax increment financing. It may also raise funds through borrowings from financial institutions, including bilateral and multilateral. The local body is also expected to encourage private sector for developing civic amenities under the public private partnership model.

Recently, the municipal authorities gave a presentation on its various schemes including the Rs 792-crore water distribution project, to stake its claim for the smart city project. Moreover, municipal commissioner Prakash Mahajan has also asked all the heads of the departments in the civic body to add value to the project by highlighting other proposed projects on health, education and affordable housing for the urban poor.

Now, the civic body will have to submit a smart city proposal on urban governance and annual performance to the government within three months

Smart City tag will transform Aurangabad, claim experts

Ranjana Diggikar,TNN | Aug 28, 2015,

AURANGABAD: Expressing delight over the city's inclusion in the smart city project, experts said on Thursday that the move will help provide a major boost to complete the pending infrastructure projects and change the face of Aurangabad.

They said the city has tremendous potential as it has both modernity through the upcoming Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project and history through the world famous Ajanta and Ellora Caves, which no other city has.

"The major problem in implementing development projects and improvising infrastructure was paucity of funds. Now, the challenge can be overcome with this announcement and further financial assistance from the central government. Meanwhile, it is high time that the citizens too take up responsibility and contribute by paying regular taxes to help Aurangabad bag a place in the project's first phase of 20 cities," said Rishi Kumar, former chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Marathwada zone.

Mukund Kulkarni, a member of the Marathwada Statutory Board, said Aurangabad was looking for such an opportunity earlier to get benefit under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), but failed. "The city lagged behind in getting financial assistance from the central government for any scheme, barring the parallel pipeline project, which is more about discussion than execution. The city has great potential as it is an industrial, tourist and upcoming education hub," he said.

"The smart city scheme would definitely benefit Aurangabad. But it comes with challenges such as fund generation. The civic body as well as the state government will need to contribute 25% funds each, while the central government would be providing 50% funds. Another challenge would be to complete the project within the deadline otherwise there are chances of the funds getting lapsed. We must ensure that we do not miss the chance and execute the project in a planned manner," Kulkarni said.

He said the government plans to identify 20 smart cities in 2015, 40 in 2016 and another 40 in 2017. "There will be a cap of two-three smart cities per state. Aurangabad has an edge over other cities in finding place in the first phase, as among the 10 cities selected in the state, some have already benefited under JNNURM. While Nashik got funds for hosting Kumbh Mela, Nagpur has already bagged many major projects such as setting up AIMS and IIM. Meanwhile, the parallel development of Aurangabad in terms of the DMIC project and Shendra-Bidkin smart city has become necessary as well," he added.

Audi gears up for fresh investment in India
Pankaj Doval,TNN | Sep 3, 2015, 05.59AM IST

NEW DELHI: German auto major Audi is set to pump in fresh investment and enhance its manufacturing set-up in India as the company eyes sales of over 50,000 cars by 2020.
A senior official in the Volkswagen group - of which Audi is a constituent - said the fresh investment for India will be announced "very soon" by a board member from the brand's headquarters. "The plan is to have a bigger set-up in India as the market is seen as key and strategic," the official said, requesting anonymity.
When contacted, Joe King, the head of Audi in India, said the company is bullish on India, but did not confirm any investment numbers. The company, he said, is not perturbed by the loss of ground to compatriot Mercedes Benz in the first half of this year and hopes to finish the full-year "ahead" of its rival.
"We had a market share of 34% last year, and we are confident of having this dominant share even by 2020," he told TOI in Udaipur recently after the company drove in the new-generation version of A6 sedan.
The company sold 10,851 units last year, a shade higher than the 10,201 units sold by Mercedes. However, in the first half of this year, Mercedes raced ahead with sales of 6,659 units and a growth of 41%. Audi has refused to disclose its numbers for the period, and has said it will only announce full-year numbers.
The luxury car market in India is small at present, accounting for sales of around 33,000 units last year. It is nearly 1% of the overall passenger vehicle market and officials feel that its share will go up as disposable income rises and companies drive in new models and announce attractive financing schemes. Audi had entered India around 2007, and so far operates out of group company Skoda's factory in Aurangabad. Its investment till now is pegged at around 30 million euros (Rs 220 crore) and on a single shift, the company can produce 14,000 units on an annual basis.
The Volkswagen group sees Audi India's operation as "strategic" and something that needs to be expanded, the senior official said. "The poor performance of the group's other two brands, VW and Skoda, has also meant that Audi gets a push since it is doing well.

Speed up work on convention centre, CMIA urges govt

AURANGABAD: The region's industry body has urged the state government's attention to the snail-paced progress on the International Convention Centre, despite the project clearing all the red tape back in 2012.

Despite identification of land, preparation of plan and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) clearing all administrative procedures in 2012, since then the progress of establishment of International Convention Centre (ICC) at Shendra has not picked up the required momentum. Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA) which has been continuously following up with the state government on the progress of establishment of ICC has urged the government to review the progress of work of ICC considering its need and significance.

"CMIA had highlighted the need and significance of establishing ICC at Aurangabad in 2004 and its direct benefit for the growth and development to the region. Since then, CMIA is continuously following up with state government on the progress of establishment of ICC at DMIC Shendra in Aurangabad," said CMIA president Ashish Garde.

"The government had announced its policy decision of establishment of ICC at DMIC Shendra on July 7, 2009 on 50 acres of land with an investment of about Rs 900 crores. On April 21, 2012, MIDC cleared the said file for further action. Since then, the progress of establishment of ICC at Shendra has not picked up the required momentum in spite of identification of land, preparation of plan and associated permissions in place," he said."
Garde argued that it was a proven international trend that International Convention Centres, if built and used effectively round the year for hosting thematic conferences and exhibitions, can act as a strong economic driver with tremendous potential of creating new business and job opportunities while giving boost to the overall economy of the region.

"CMIA has requested the chief minister and industries minister to schedule a meeting of all the officials concerned for reviewing the current status of this important project. Such a follow-up meeting is most important and required for monitoring the progress of this ambitious project and its execution in a time bound manner," he said.

"Common citizens and the business community of this region have a lot of hopes and expectations from the current government and the speed with which such critical projects are executed, which are directly linked with the aspirations of common citizens. CMIA is confident that the ministers would spare time for addressing such important issues connected with growth and development," added Garde.

After Roti Bank, a 'Kapda Bank' opened in Maharashtra's Aurangabad

IANS | Jan 27, 2016,

AURANGABAD: After launching a 'Roti Bank' here last month, the Haron Mukati Islamic Centre on Tuesday inaugurated a 'Kapda Bank' intended to provides clothes to the poorest of poor.

HMIC founder Yusuf Mukati said that while the 'roti bank' is flourishing with food donations, he had observed that many poor people who came to pick up their food packets barely had enough clothes.

"In fact, I saw many people, especially elders and children, shivering in the biting cold as they were wearing torn or insufficient clothes. This gave me an idea to do something about the problem," Mukati told IANS.

He passed the word around the communities to come forward and donate whatever extra clothes people could manage.

The response was most encouraging, he said.

"The only condition was that though the clothes may be used, they should not be torn or worn out, so we can directly donate them to the poor people. I was surprised when within two days, I got a 'deposit' of around 600 full sets of clothes and we could open the 'Kapda Bank' on the auspicious Republic Day," Mukati said.

All clothes are carefully examined for any wear/tears, missing buttons, hooks, loose stiching, segregated according to size and gender, then sent for dry-cleaning and ironing before they are given in transparent plastic bags to the beneficiaries.

The first day saw a large number of poor men, women and children, mostly slumdwellers, trooping down to collect the clothes.

Mukati's team of volunteers checked out their 'yellow ration cards' indicating they fall in the below poverty line (BPL) category and gave them one set of clothes each after noting down their names, addresses, etc.

"This is to ensure that people don't come repeatedly for more clothes and we can cast the net wide for beneficiaries. We want them to wear and use the clothes and not give them away or even sell them cheap. We want everbody to appear dignified with decent clothes," said Mukati.
