Permission granted to convert Grade II listed building in Gateshead into 58 new homes

A historic industrial building in Gateshead is set for a new future after permission was granted to convert it into 58 new homes.

Part of the Ochre Yard developments in Gateshead, the Grade II listed Block 2 used to be the Boiler Shop for Greenesfield Railway Works. Now Bellway are set to transform the building into 58 new dwellings, with designs drawn up by P+HS Architects, which has recently opened an office in Newcastle.

Construction of Blocks 1 and 3 at Ochre Yards began in 2003, with works continuing steadily since then. Workmen are currently working on the final new build, Block 10, which is set to be completed later this year, leaving the conversion of Block 2, which dates back to 1877, as the final work needed to complete the development. Overall the site comprises 11 apartment blocks providing 694 contemporary apartments.

P+HS Architects’ Director of Housing Chris Dennis said the design challenge for the Boiler Shop, an expansive Victorian industrial building of significant historic and visual importance, was to adapt large spaces and elements such as windows to the smaller-scale requirements of individual dwellings. He said the design team worked painstakingly to achieve a viable and sensitive solution, working closely with planning and heritage consultants as well as the wider community to protect the heritage of the building, which has significant importance in the Tyne Bridges conservation area. We are delighted to have secured planning for this important building on the Ochre Yards site. We have worked closely with Bellway (North East) in developing Ochre Yards for over ten years, creating almost 700 new apartments and bringing new life to the former Railway works site that is an important part of the region’s industrial heritage.”

Block 10, the one currently being worked on parallel to the railway line is to be called Trigo House, according to Bellway's site: http://www.bellway.co.uk/new-homes/n...st/ochre-yards

The one thing that amazes me about this development is access. There is literally one tiny road via Wellington Street that leads to thousands of homes!

Ochre Yards Housing, Gateshead - how it used to look in July 1986 as Greenesfield Railway Depot

Follow up on post #32 from 26/10/13

Came across another You Tube video "The Alan Harrison Collection Part 7 Gateshead Depot" uploaded by kartwheelkarl on 23/06/18 that shows the Greenesfield TMD, located at south end of King Edward and High Level Bridges, Gateshead and now site of Ochre Yards Housing Development during operation in July 1986

Full link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9rhrY1_L4c

Shows in addition to locomotives and trains the buildings of the depot, views across the river of the July 1986 Newcastle skyline and also view of now demolished St Cuthberts Village housing, Gateshead
