Phase 2 proposal

Metro Rail to cover additional 51 km route

Nagpur: Even as work on phase I of Nagpur Metro is going on at full speed, Mahametro has already started planning for phase II. The detailed project report (DPR) of second phase will be ready by April. The second phase will be covering a stretch of 48 kilometre which will cost Rs10,860 crore at today’s prices.
Mahametro’s consultant RITES, gave a presentation on the second phase. It will have five routes with a total of 34 stations. Most of it will be elevated. The only possibility for at grade section is between Wasudeo Nagar and Wadi, if Ambazari Ordnance Factory agrees to hand over its land.
Piyush Kansal, RITES group general manager, in his presentation, said that the first corridor was from Automotive Square to Kanhan. “It will be13 km long stretch and will have 13 stations. The corridor will cater to Khasara village, Lekha Nagar (Kamptee), Kamptee town and Dragon Palace Temple,” he added.
The second corridor will connect Khapri with Butibori MIDC. It will be 19km long and will have 9 stations. The catchment area is Jamtha, Dongargaon, Mohgaon, Butibori village, MHADA Colony and Indorama Colony. The third one is extension of route from Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna Tehsil Office. It is 6km long with 6 stations and will pass through Nildoh, Gajanan Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Raipur and Hingna village. The fourth is extension from Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar. It is 4km long and has 4 stations.
The fifth is a spur from Wasudeo Nagar to Wadi. It will be 6km long with two stations. Its catchment area is Raisoni College, Hingna MIDC, Ordnance Factory Colony and Wadi. There are three alternative routes for this corridor and the final decision is yet to be taken. The ridership on this route even in 2041 is very low.
Mahametro had organized a presentation of phase II for public representatives and government officers on Saturday. The local netas gave several suggestions to the agency. Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ramtek MP Krupal Tumane, MLAs Sameer Meghe and Sudhakar Deshmukh suggested that Wadi be connected to Sitabuldi along Amravati Road.
“If you connect Wadi with Wasudeo Nagar, you will not get much traffic. However, if Amravati Road localities are connected with rest of the city, Metro will have more ridership,” Bawankule said. Later talking to the media, Mahametro managing director Brijesh Dixit said that the suggestions would be explored. “It is question of traffic density. If there is traffic on the route we will go for it,” he said.

Nagpur Metro rail to be operational on two routes by Feb end

Quote:
Dr Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of Maha Metro, claimed that Nagpur Metro rail is soon going to make two of its routes operational by February end. The two routes, which would be a total stretch of 19 kms, would commence from Khapri to Sitabuldi Munje Square (13 kms) and between Lokmanya Nagar to Subhash Nagar (6 kms).

Dixit, while addressing media persons on Thursday, also said that eight metro stations (Khapri, New Airport, Airport, South, Airport, Jaiprakash Nagar, Sitabuldi, Lokmanya Nagar and Subhash Nagar) would be operational on both the routes. The fare of the Metro (decided by the state government) would be Rs 30 from Sitabuldi to Khapri and Rs 23 from Lokmanya Nagar to Subhash Nagar.

Trial runs are ongoing currently. Apparently 19km stretch with 8 stations will open by the month's end. Some stations in between will open at a later date as they are not finished yet

Just five years ago, we all doubted that a metro for Nagpur would not be conceived for at least 50-100 years. Well, how things can change. I have nothing but high hopes for the Nagpur Metro.

Two predictions of mine: I think the stations (initially 70m for three-car trains) will need to be doubled in length as Nagpur's population continues to increase. I also bet that the branch to Wadi proposed as part of Phase II is going to spun off into a second north-south line (and overall third line) rather than be an extension of the initial east-west line.
