South Shields Riverside (New Shore) - Waterfront Park etc as at 31/07/12

Looks as if work has started on this scheme as I noted metal fences up on approach to ferry landing (with G O'Brien Demolition signs) as well as plywood fences being erected to east of new BT building along line of main road - see my photograph taken 31/07/12 approx 1235 (hosted on Photobucket)

Bulldozers move in to begin town’s facelift.

Published on Friday 9 November 2012 11:22

SOUTH Shields is undergoing a facelift.

Work is already ongoing to create a new £2.3m riverside park at Harton Staithes, on the land between the Ferry Landing and the Customs House.

And bulldozers have now moved on to Duncan House site at Crossgate – the ‘gateway’ to the town.

Built at the cost of £750,000, it was opened in 1975, and originally employed about 400 people, mainly clerical staff of Allied Services Limited, the company behind the Liptons and Presto supermarket chains.

At the time it was beside the town’s telephone exchange and The Tavern nightspot – now Springs health club.

In the past 37 years, the four-storey complex has been home to thousands of office workers, latterly serving as head office to supermarket giants Safeway and Morrisons.

Work starts on South Shields Riverside Ribbon Wall
by Ruth Lognonne, The Journal, November 21st 2012

Phil Morgan, regional director, Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering and Coun Michael Clare

WORK HAS STARTED on building the ribbon wall at South Tyneside Council’s £2.3m Waterfront Park on the riverside at South Shields. The structure at Harton Quays Park is a curved retaining wall built from reinforced earth, faced with 144 decorative concrete panels. Harton Quays Park is joint-funded by South Tyneside Council and the Homes and Communities Agency and is being constructed by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering.

When complete, the park will stretch along the River Tyne from South Shields ferry landing to the Customs House and feature curved embankments, an amphitheatre, promenade, high-specification landscaping and planting including mature trees.

Coun Michael Clare, the council’s lead member for regeneration and economy, said: “Harton Quays Park is a symbolic project as part of South Tyneside Council’s regeneration masterplan. The picturesque waterfront park will connect users with business, retail and cultural facilities and promises to be a wonderful amenity for the borough. The ribbon walling shows the level of care and attention to detail that has been applied to this programme and will be something for residents to be proud of for years to come.”

Work has started on the demolition of the buildings which form the northern boundary to the market place.

Published on Tuesday 18 December 2012 16:00

THE end is nigh for a blot on South Tyneside’s landscape after the bulldozers moved in.

The Wouldhave House office complex in South Shields’ Market Place is to be flattened.

Built in the 1960s, its appearance has become increasingly rundown in recent years.

Now all council staff once based there have moved and the retail outlets housed beneath it have closed or been relocated, with bookmakers Ladbrokes the last to move on.

Having been covered in the South Shields, Jarrow & Hebburn areas thread in Steve Ellwood's post #118, NH's post #132, Arch 1976's post #146 and my post #148, with pictures

This picture of mine from March 2012 showing the elevation fronting the Market Square (hosted on Photobucket)

A good excuse to have a visit to South Shields (weather permitting) and pick up pictures of this demolition, the work to river frontage, Duncan House demolition and the new swimming pool etc

South Shields Riverside (New Shore) - Harton Quays Waterfront Park etc

£2.3 million waterfront park receives specialist award
Press release from South Tyneside Council 12/02/13:-

Extracts

South Tyneside Council's new £2.3 million waterfront park has received a specialist CEEQUAL Client & Design Award.

The highly regarded honour represents over 24 months hard work by a network of designers working on Harton Quays Park in South Shields. They include Grant Associates and Mott MacDonald.

CEEQUAL is an evidence-based Sustainability Assessment and Awards Scheme for civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and the public realm. The award celebrates the achievement of high environmental and social performance.

Harton Quays Park received a 'Very Good' commendation as part of the award assessment.

Harton Quays Park is joint-funded by South Tyneside Council and the Homes and Communities Agency and is being constructed by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering.

The installation commenced back in November of Harton Quays Park's impressive curved ribbon wall, which is made up of 144 precast concrete panels. This is just one of the key facets that make Harton Quays Park so unique.

Harton Quays Park is being developed as part of the wider regeneration masterplan for South Shields Riverside programme due for completion in Spring 2013.
