South Shields Riverside (New Shore) - Harton Quays Waterfront Park etc as at 20/06/13

Here are a few pictures taken by myself Thursday 20/06/13 approx 1015 showing works that have been carried out by Balfour Beatty (and other subcontractors), to the area between the South Shields Ferry Landing and the area to the east of the Customs House, (pictures hosted on Photobucket)

Further areas of tarmac paving being laid in vicinity of approach to ferry landing - much further work to "fountain"

Starting to look really good, I just wish North Tyneside had the creative vision and political unity to improve their seaside in a similar way, benefiting the communities they represent .

Good set of shots Ken - I was talking to someone in South Shields yesterday who mentioned the fact the Harton Quays Park should have been completed now, so its another one that is overrunning, swimming pool is the other. Shame both couldn't have been on time and enjoying the custom that this fine weather would have brought.

Yes there is certainly a marked difference when you compare both Councils and to me South Tyneside comes out on top!

Have recently moved to South Shields from Leeds and have to say how impressed I am. Especially at the moment seems to be a lot of progress being made, the riverside park, the new town square, redevelopment of Ocean Rd,the new pool, and the new prom at Littlehaven. All quiet impressive.
From looking at Whitley Bay area I would say South Shields is far more attractive place to live than north of the river. When you add in the parks and the beaches think ive made the right decision.

Agree with most of this, it's just a shame it's south of the water!

Park opening delayed - but shows will go on

This from today's Shields Gazette @ http://www.shieldsgazette.com/what-s...o-on-1-5868734

Park opening delayed - but shows will go on

THE opening of a new riverside park in South Shields has been delayed.

A string of performances had been scheduled to go ahead at the amphitheatre in Harton Quays Park at Harton Staithes, from July 26.

Council bosses, who are behind the regeneration scheme, say the work was delayed due to the sub contractors carrying out the work going into liquidation.

But theatre fans shouldn’t fret, as performances will still go ahead at the nearby Customs House in Mill Dam, South Shields.

The £2.3m park will stretch along the Tyne from South Shields Ferry Landing to the Customs House, and feature a refreshments kiosk, promenade and amphitheatre.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty started work at the site in November, last year. It was hoped the amphitheatre would be ready sooner, but work is now expected to be completed by the end of August.

A council spokesman said: “It was always our intention to have the amphitheatre ready for the Customs House summer programme.

“Unfortunately, the subcontractor which manufactures the specialist custom-made seating for the amphitheatre has gone into liquidation and it has taken the main contractor some time to source an alternative supplier.

“We look forward to the park itself being completed by the end of August.

“However, there will be some parts that the public will not be able to access straight away to allow planted areas to establish themselves.”

Shows scheduled to be performed in the open-air venue are I [Heart] ST on July 26, Dracula on August 9
and Cuddy and His Mates on August 10.

But theatre bosses say the shows will still go ahead in and around the Customs House.

Ray Spencer, executive director of the Customs House, said: “The Amphitheatre is an exciting new addition to programming at the Customs House and we can’t wait to put shows in the space.

“We have a great summer season with several shows due to be performed in the new Harton Quays Amphitheatre, however, the show must go on and they will now be performed in and around The Customs House.

“We are already speaking to various production companies about some fantastic ideas for the amphitheatre and look forward to announcing a season of new shows in the space.”

Congrats to South Tyneside. This is looking really, really good and adds to a lot of their other good work around the town.

The park is going to be fantastic for viewing ships/Scandinavian ferries coming and going.I was just wondering though does anybody know what's happening on the other side of Custom house? Seems a lot's been cleared round there.

Just a former shipyard waiting for redevelopment - overgrown with weeds and looking forlorn. Docks are still in place but no gates/doors on them.

By the way the sight of a Scandinavian ferry these days is highly unlikely, DFDS stopped that route a good few years ago and now run to Ijmuiden (Holland) on a daily basis.

Yes the park should look good when its finished.

It looks really god except one thing.

Why are the lighting columns fitted with the sort of utilitarian brackets you'd get beside any ordinary road?
