This incredible shipping container garden IS coming to the Gateshead Quayside

Plans designed by a Chelsea Flower Show star for a spectacular garden made of shipping containers on the Quayside have been approved.

The spectacular installation, which will house cafes and shops inside the impressive structure, will sit close to the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead side of the river. Although it will be temporary, it’s expected to be in place for several years as an attraction during big events like the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018 and the NewcastleGateshead World Transplant Games in 2019.

The National Trust and volunteers will be involved in the upkeep of the garden and the site is expected to create 100 jobs and attract 200,000 people every year. When it is opened in 2018, it promises to provide a tranquil space in the heart of the city where families can relax and food can be grown.

It’s not the only project in the pipeline which could transform the Gateshead side of the Quayside in coming years.

Next week, the North East Combined Authority will take a key step in pressing ahead with a 12,500 venue area between the Sage and the Baltic. The £200m development will see the Metro Radio Area relocate, as well as a host of new shops and restaurants. The plans will be formally signed off on Thursday December 7.

I sincerely hope to be proved wrong!
Anyone in the know have any more info on whether the Tyne Bridge towers are still going to be incorporated in this, as the video suggests?

I very much doubt that this would happen. For starters, its a listed structure, so planting trees on top of the towers ain't gonna happen for that reason alone. Secondly, the Tyne Bridge will be getting repaired in the next year - 18 months and it will take 3 years, during which time, one assumes, it will be completely under cover.

So I am 99.9% certain that will not happen.

Ambitious plans for a Willy Wonka-inspired urban garden on Gateshead Quays are set to be given the green light.

TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin unveiled his vision for his ‘dream garden’ in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge in October. The disused area of Gateshead’s Quayside where the Tuxedo Princess and Royale once stood will be transformed into an urban garden made out of shipping containers and filled with bars, restaurants and art exhibitions.

Plans for the scheme - which will be privately funded - have been submitted to Gateshead Council, and planning chiefs have recommended the proposal for temporary permission ahead of the authority’s next planning committee meeting on Wednesday, subject to conditions.

If planning permission is granted, the development is expected to be finished by June 2018 in time for the start of the Great Exhibition of the North. Planning chiefs have recommended the proposals be given temporary permission for a period of five years, which would ensure the development remains in place for the NewcastleGateshead World Transplant Games in 2019.

A name for the project has not yet been given, although Diarmuid said the title Tuxedo Gardens had been suggested.
