Planning permission was only granted 13th December 2017, so I reckon we may see something substantial in the coming months.

They need to get a move on if they want this ready for the Exhibition - typical for round here, leave everything until the very last minute!

8 weeks until the opening ceremony (22 June), I’m not hopeful much will be done before that.
Regardless of people’s feelings towards the box park on the old Odeon site you have to say they’ve not wasted any time since planning was granted.

Reports circulating that the Container Garden has been Scrapped. Gateshead Council are looking at other schemes for the site. Well at least the area has been tidied up if nothing else happens.

You should have had a bet on it at the Bookies

What's sad is that a development in an entirely appropriate site for a container park is not happening but one an a wholly inappropriate site is...

TBH I think that the writing has been on the wall for a while...

Lets hope the proposed Conference and Exhibition Centre doesn't go the same way.

Yea I was excited about this, also seemed like it could have been the catalyst for more leisure developments in this very quiet area of the quayside

As with all of these things it will come down to money. The arena will probably in part hinge on the value and ownership of the current Ncl site and how much of a sweetener Gateshead gives, but on the face of it it seems viable.

Looking at the container park the question was always - who's paying? The Pilgrim street homage to Calais jungle will be packed to the rafters [or tin roof] with bars paying rent, but the Gateshead one seemed to have a lot of pretty trees which unfortunately wouldn't bring much income - sure Gateshead would have tenants but always seemed doubtful it could wash its face unless subsidised.

As nice as the greenery etc is, I do think some 'life' needs to be brought to the steep hills between Ochre Yards and the riverside path - be it little 'pod' businesses, rabbit hutch apartments etc. And obviously stuff to replace Brett Oils and Baja etc. It really is miserable and useless space.
(I know trees breathe n all that, but it's not a space anyone can usefully enjoy, which in such a central urban spot, they should be able to).

No pics unfortunately, but it makes me wonder, did they get the memo; there is a lot of activity on this site at the moment, they seem to be digging it up. I wonder what's going on?

This side of the river really needs some eateries and cafes to bring it some life

I do wonder if the structural survey for the Wily Wonker installation has thrown up some problems - that may have fed into why it wasn't staged?

Friend was one of the engineers on the Hilton - he told me that there was no 'record' of any of the condition, content, 'structure' of the banks beneath it which made the project a nightmare.
