Nice pics!!

I must be one of the few on here who actually likes this. I liked it from the pictures and did always think it'd be an improvement, but I now think it looks really nice especially compared to the renders.

I think they've done a good job. I've still not seen it 'with my own eyes' though. I've been home quite a bit, just not to that part of town, but as soon as my exams are over I'm going to pop back for a bit and make sure I get a look.

I reckon the colours of the stadium, business school, hotel and the offices on Gallowgate give it a nice sophisticated and simple look, even if it is quite monochrome and boring almost. I really like it.

Newcastle Backpackers Hostel

Doesn't look like this place has been discussed before?

Happened upon it when up on Westgate Hill this afternoon trying to track down the illusive Summer Hill House

Hadn't seen or heard of this place and assume it must have been one of the motorcycle shops in the past.

I see the owners have a web site @ http://www.backpackersnewcastle.com/

Malmaison Hotel sell-off speculation partially played down
by Peter McCusker, The Journal, May 11th 2011

The Malmaison Hotel on the Quayside

THE chief executive of the Malmaison Hotel chain said last night that he was unable to quash speculation the company's premises in Newcastle would be put up for sale.

London-based MWB Group yesterday confirmed that it was in discussions to sell some of its 26 Malmaison and Hotel Du Vin hotels as its looks to pay down a £300m debt.

Last night, Richard Balfour-Lynn, chief executive of the MWB Group, said: “We are looking at a number of options for the business and at this stage I cannot say what we will and will not do. I do not wish to speculate on which sites we are looking at.

“We are aiming to raise some new capital for a combination of refinancing and growth. Both hotels (Malmaison and Hotel Du Vin) are great brands and we believe there is further potential for the growth of both.”

Perhaps they could buy the charming shark parked on the front of Flynns. I m sure they could use the money.

This is their Canadian site; took a bit of accessing. I think we can assume that this is not a place to take Mrs Newcastlepubs. perhaps more gentleman's night out.

It almost looks fun, but [and I can t explain this] I d rather be in a bar in Winnepeg with a bunch of hockey fans than in a bar near St James after a 3 -1 defeat. Looks like Sinners meets Sam Jacks

Hoardings are down on the Sandman revealing the double-height entrance and some of the interior (no pics as was driving). They seem to be cladding it in some veneer-thin marble effect plastic and in my opinion, looks pretty cheap and I cant think will age well.

Also looks like the paint job on the upper floors will need a touch-up as whatever work they were doing drilling those holes across the front (for external lighting maybe?) has left some pretty impressive stains!

The Take That concerts and the Evolution Festival boost North East Hotels
by Michael Brown, The Journal, May 25th 2011

LAST minute holidaymakers will have to look elsewhere this weekend as the North East is fully booked.

Hotels across the region will be packed to capacity with more than 250,000 eager music fans descending for Take That concerts in Sunderland at the same time that Newcastle’s Evolution festival takes place. With just a handful of rooms remaining, city centre hotels in Newcastle had inflated their prices to more than £200 a room, more than double the usual cost in some cases.

Tourism chiefs have said the sold-out hotels will inject millions into the region’s economy, with the potential for the positive effects to be felt far beyond the Bank Holiday boost. Sarah Stewart, chief executive of the NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said the events offered a chance to change people’s ideas about the North East. “It’s a great combination to have Take That and the Evolution festival coinciding, as concerts like that are essential for bringing in first time visitors.

“And once someone has visited it makes them more receptive to the idea of coming to live, work or study here, which is all good for the economy.”

Last night hotel booking website LateRooms.com showed over 175 hotels in Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough as fully booked. And what few rooms remained were either priced over £199 or miles from the major cities. Mrs Stewart said: “We’re often asked about the fact that there are five or six hotels under development and eight or nine proposed sites and whether we can support so many, but we have a steady level of bookings, probably second only to London, and peak times like this prove we need more.

Newcastle Hotel market is booming
by Peter McCusker, The Journal, May 25th 2011

NewcastleGateshead is proving to be a magnet for hotel developers with four hotels under construction and a further eight possibly on the way.

One of the first of the new developments to complete will be on Gateshead Quays.

The Jurys Inn hotel group is close to completing its new 204-bed, three-star hotel near the Baltic arts centre. It currently has one 274-bed, three-star hotel in the city at St James’ Gate in Newcastle.

Jurys’ Inn general manager for the two Tyneside hotels David Malanaphy, said: “We reviewed current performance of the city’s hotel market and identified strong future demand. Opening a new hotel is a long-term commitment and we are impressed with what NewcastleGateshead Initiative has delivered to date and what they plan to deliver in the future.

“We are excited about future development anticipated in NewcastleGateshead such as the new Science Central site outlined in the 1PLAN and are confident that tourism in the city will continue to grow and attract demand now and in the future.”

This opening will be followed by the Canadian-owned Sandman Signature, a 170-bed, four-star hotel at Gallowgate, the 98-bed, three-star Sleeperz, on Westgate Road, and the Ramada Encore, a 202-bed, three-star hotel, also on Gateshead Quays.

Further proposals include two four-star hotels at the Stephenson Quarter development, near the Central Station, and plans for a luxury hotel on Grey Street, by Newcastle-based DAV Developments, which has been dubbed the ‘Dorchester of the North’.

I was looking at the old Tyne Tees site the other day and thinking that would make a great hotel development, the premier inn next door is quite small

Check out the Development web site @ http://www.cityquay-newcastle.co.uk/

From what I can see it is being advertised as primarily an office's led development but it wouldn't surprise me if a hotel was erected.

You may be right, but you seem to be in slight contradiction with this report of a few days ago . . .

I've been saying that for a while Naveenh. True, there'll be the odd time like the Great North Run and this weekend just gone where they'll all be pretty full but what about the other 50 weeks of the year? I think there'll be enough capacity for the area once those under construction at the moment are finished.
