many people say the Colorium in Düsseldorf is ugly. I like it, I feel home when I see it.

It would be better if it was all black and white cladding or all colored but both is tacky IMO

The Book Tower in Detroit could have been so much better. ( Mercantile Building in NYC for example )

Remove that ugly staircase and give it a good clean up and it should look much better.

The Book Tower itself is not ugly.
Louis Kamper was still trying to get a handle on skyscraper design when the Book Tower was conceived and built. I would call it a bit awkward rather than ugly. It definitely needs a good exterior cleaning. The staircase is on a side not seen very much from the street.

Was this tower designed by Piet Mondriaan?

indeed, very close

Had to look it up. Apparently it was designed by British architect Will Allen Alsop. Praised and criticised for his controversial modernist buildings.

You can tell he was trying so very, very hard. But the sum of the parts does not equal the whole. It is fussy and ill-proportioned.

To be honest I can never figure out why everyone seems to like that so much. To me it is like they took a very dated looking tower, put in
an incredible amount of work and money on it, and came up with a different dated looking tower. Better to have imploded it and started afresh.

Art Deco is also dated, is it not?

Couldn't they use that gap for a windmill electricity generator or something.

I won't say ugly... just kinda... unique? :P

but for a university to have this type of building, that university sure is rich.

Call me crazy but that tower kinda works? The color, the shape, the facade, the weird gold ferris wheel on top, it all comes together into a package that works for this specific tower. Not the most beautiful building ever built obviously, but it's definitely interesting. Belongs in Disney though.
