Insular prefectures and sub-prefectures of Japan - Okinawa 沖縄 | Hachijo 八丈島 | Ogasawara Islands 小笠原諸島 | Yakushima 屋久島

I guess I'll get this one started off. I'm from Okinawa, and thats what my pics are of. All pics are from the internet, except for the one of the high-rise building taken from a parking lot. that was by me! haha. ENJOY!!

Lets first look at Naha, the capital and largest city of Okinawa at 313,000.

This large building in the top center of this photo is the Prefecture Government building. This is downtown Naha.

This photo is of all of downtown Naha. LOTS of small high-rises, very dense and crowded.

Now onto the recently completed monorail, locally called "Yui-Rail". It is about 12 kilometers long and runs through Naha city from the airport through downtown. About 30,000 riders daily.

Now onto the airport, which has a new domestic passenger terminal completed about 6 years ago. The airport serves about 13 million passengers per year.

And now to the tallest building on Okinawa (not actually in Naha). Completed last year, the Beach Tower Okinawa is 24 stories.

Well sorry for only posting 7 photos. This is my first time posting photos on this board ever haha. I hope to take some original ones later, but its hard because I'm only 16 and can't drive. Well, enjoy these few pics!

Those pictures of Nara were awesome. It looks like quite a big city for only 312,000.Are you sure the population is that small? The city must have a bigger urban area for a city centre that big.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, Naha has a population of 313,000, but its hard to say where the metro ends. Our island is small, and the population of the whole island is about 1.3 million. So I would say that there is about 1 million in the metro area, but I'm really not sure.

I think Naha looks quite similiar to Taiwanese Cities in terms of style of the buildings
(more than the cities in mainland Japan). Does it have to do with weather? or culture?

Nice observation! Yes, Okinawa is very closely related to Taiwan, not only proximity-wise but also culture-wise. I don't think it has much of an effect on the architecture, but then again, I haven't been to Taiwan haha.

Planners eye expansion of existing monorail system
Posted: August 19, 2005

Amidst cries of “it’s too short”, Okinawa planners are studying options to expand the 13-kilometer monorail system that runs from Naha International Airport to Shuri.

Residents have been complaining since the monorail began operations two years ago that the route doesn’t meet most needs. “We need to expand the railroad more,” is the battle cry from disgruntled patrons. The question now facing planners is how to make it better, and where to extend it.

Three options are now being explored, although several have potential flaws that may eliminate them from ever becoming reality. A Nishihara extension has been promoted widely, and the community has already asked the prefecture to budget money for the project. Nishihara residents want the monorail extended through their community to connect with the Okinawa Expressway via Route 241.

Another calls for using Route 29 to go to Nishihara, and a third calls for expansion in Naha. The 2006 construction budget is allocating funds to study and research the project with an eye to quickly moving from planning to construction.

It isn’t as easy as it sounds, say planners. For the monorail to go over an existing highway, the highway must be wider than 25 meters. Route 82 is wider than that, while the others are not. Still, residents may not accept the plan because it feeds and promotes Naha City, and not Urasoe City or Nishihara Town.

Route 241 would be the longest construction project, spanning about three kilometers of work. An extension along Route 29 would cover about two kilometers, but neither road network connects to the Expressway. That is a problem according to planners, because money would have to first be allocated to buy land for the monorail, then additional funds to expand the road network itself.

Proponents say the Route 241 design is best right now, because it would extend from Shuri and Urasoe City and encompass Nishihara Town. Advocates say the route would add three stations and be done jointly with the bus depot expansion. Planners say it would be a big project involving park and drive locations, standard parking, a rental car office and a shopping mall.

Nice pics rark. I would like to visit Fukuoka someday. I really like the look of their airport. Okinawa has many flights to there everyday . I also noticed a Daiei in your pics. Sadly, all of ours have closed. Thanks for sharing!
