yes but the question is, how many tourists really give a shit about a theatre?

i mean, i know when i go to a similar sized foreign city like san diego, the things thats gonna get me there and make me remember my stay is the name of their theatre. i mean they better be naming after a local celebrity or ill be pissed.

No one is saying that the name will make the thing a tourist destination in its own right everyone!

It's just that all things remaining equal, the Heath Ledger name will, when people are looking in their guidebook for something to do, spark interest in some people to check it out who might otherwise not have done so. At the end of the day, it will have SOME benefits over a name that is relatively unknown.

in the great aussie tradition of claiming ppl who arent from here as aussies, i suggest we cast our search further afield.

If we can call Russell Crowe, the Bee Gees, mel gibson etc aussies, surely we can name our theatre after an adopted west aussie.

i heard that stevie wonder was in town recently, he seemed to like it here, he must be an aussie by now...

Either way the chances of there actually being a show of some kind on are slim.

It's a state owned venue for contemporary acting. If the state can't honour its most successful actor on a technicality, but honours a footballer with a freeway, then clearly this is a decision based upon conservative and arbitrary notions of what is "appropriate".

You know, the same kind of arbitrary notions that lead to things like the convention centre, CityVision's foreshore plans, The "ridgeline" of St Georges Terrace and letters from members of the church decrying homosexuality as a (poor) choice. Pardon me if I sound a little "progressive" here, but **** that shit. We're all complaining that Perth is stuck in the doldrums. So let's honour someone who is not:

a) dead and;
b) an explorer and;
c) unpopular or unknown and;
d) middle-aged

Young people achieve shit, even if stuffed fish-heads like Barnett are incapable of incorporating it into their worldview. Let's celebrate it.

I’d prefer a confident city that doesn’t try in your face gimmicks to attract attention,

Definitely agree. Why would you, if you were an international tourist, decide to head to small theatre because its named after Heath Ledger (who most people wouldn't even know came from Perth anyway)? It won't be a tourist destination. If that is your sole reason for naming it after him, then that is very weak reasoning.

As for Graham Farmer Freeway, what a joke. A football obsessed state that knows nothing else.

At the same time I think it would be a joke to now change the name, though I would support them maybe just naming one part of the theatre after him, but would be a slap in the face to tell the family and fans oh sorry we have changed our minds.

i think perhaps it was a rational decision based at a time when there was a lot of hype surrounding his death. But like you said Chris it's like saying alright then we we're gonna do this, but now we don't want to, so to bad.

Naming the theatre is no where near as gimmicky as the word 'swan' in Perth.

They're not naming it after him to draw tourists, it's a way to memorialise the guy.

Because he played for East Perth and then did the dirty on them and played for West Perth... seeming as it goes west to east it was named after him because of that

But **** me some of you people are hypocritical.

You want things that define Perth as a mature worldly city, yet we cant name a theater after the BIGGEST actor this town has produced..

It probly wont attract toursts but they will see the name on a map or whatever and see that the boy comes from Perth realsie that we can produce world class professionals.

"The late Australian actor Heath Ledger has had a new performing arts centre in his hometown of Perth named after him for his commitment to acting." from BBC news, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7483906.stm
If it was going to be named bloody "Jilly Nobody theater" would have it made BBC, the biggest broadcasting company in England, **** NO.

Perth need to take all the forward steps it can and this is one of them.
