World heritage status: Unesco team to examine monuments

Quote:
JAISALMER: Representatives of International Council on Monuments and Sites ( ICOMOS), linked to Unesco, will be coming to India in the last week of August and later to Rajasthan to check the claim of five monuments that have been nominated from India this time for world heritage status. These five monuments are in Rajasthan. India has sent eight entries for world heritage status. Shika Jain consultant with Development & Research Organisation for Nature, Arts & Heritage said last year not a single monument from India could be included in the list.

Two proposals were sent but were not accepted. This year for 2011-12, nominations for eight monuments have been sent.

They include Himalayan National Park, Qutub Shahi tombs, Jalore Fort, Ranthambore Fort, Gagrone Fort Jhalawar fort, Chittor Fort, Amber Fort and Kumbhalgarh Fort. However, Unesco has told the authorities to send the nomination of Himalayan park and Qutub Shahi tombs next year as these monuments do not have complete documentation, maps etc. Similarly, due to some complication in Jalore Fort, it has been advised to send the nomination next year. Entries have gone for nomination in January 2011, they were sorted in February. The entire process takes ne-and-a-half years.

Shikha said although Jaisalmer Fort can contend for the world heritage monument status, but due to drainage problems etc it is not possible to send the nomination at present. The proposal would be sent after completion of the work of laying new sewerage line at the fort. She said the five monuments nominated for world heritage are in Rajasthan and to check their claim

COMOS team will be coming to Rajasthan. Experts in various fields are coming here to visit these sites, they will check parameters which they have given in their nomination and which of the world's monument will be included the list of world heritage will be decided at Petersburg in Russia in June 2012.

She said RUIDP still has not got the methodological approval from the Archaeological Survey of India for changing the sewerage line in Jaisalmer fort. Although ASI officers have agreed but still formalities are left. Due to delay for many years in changing sewerage line, the stability of Sonar Fort is affected. The water is seeping into the fort's foundation.

World Monument Fund (India) representative Amita Baig says India has many beautiful heritage sites that could be included in the list of world heritage monuments, but effective effort has not been made for this. She said India's history is 5000 years' old but today only 28 Indian monuments are included in the list of world heritage sites. This is really disappointing, whereas a total 980 sties are in the world heritage list.

'Godwad festival' to be showcased for promoting tourism

Quote:
JODHPUR: Giving a new dimension to tourism in the state, the tourism department has latched on to a new festival for Godwad region comprising Pali district which remained neglected for long. The department has decided to hold a tourist festival comprising ancient Ranakpur and Sun temple, where a full day yoga training session will be held followed by Indian classical dance.

Deputy director (tourism) Anand Tripathi, emphasizing the need to explore new places and ideas, said that yoga has always identified as a means of healthy living and a heritage of India, which has in recent past, found enormous favour with the foreign tourists, who are curious to learn about it. "After incorporating yoga in tourism in Jaipur, now we are bringing this concept to the picturesque Aravalli ranges, which has hitherto been unexplored, but has a rich potential with rich historical and architectural value", he added. This festival will be held in Ranakpur from August 9 to 12, which will also have classical dance performances at the adjacent 13th century Sun temple and the event is being publicized as " Yoga Retreat and Classical Dance Festival". Assistant director (tourism) Vikas Pandya said the idea is to retain the tourists at one spot for atleast one night. Recently, the region had its third tourism event, the Godwad Festival, which has succeeded in winning the interest of the tourist given the footfalls in these three years. "In these three years, the spending on this festival has also shot up to 13 lakh from a meagre 3 lakh on the launching year 2009 enabling us to add more dimensions to it," said Pandya.

Meanwhile, entrepreneurs are also willing to add spice to the tourism recipe of the state. "It is high time that we offer new attractions to the tourists and the rich value system of India is a big draw in this direction, which has not yet been tapped," said Karni Jasol, curator of Mehrangarh Fort, who is currently on the task of developing Nagaur Fort as a "scholars retreat", where the tourists will learn about art, culture and heritage of the region.

National park beckons visitors with eco-tourism

Quote:
BHARATPUR: Come October and the Keoladeo National Park will wear a new, enhanced look, which promises to be both tourist and environment friendly.

The tailor-made ecotourism project at the bird sanctuary is currently under implementation and would be completed before the season of the migratory birds begin.

As part the ecotourism project, the entire sanctuary is set to make use of solar energy for its power needs. Except for the air-conditioners , everything from computers, lights to water-pumps at the park would run on solar power. Even the lights and fans at the offices and the park's guest house will go solar. This will make Keoladeo, the first national park in the country to convert to non-conventional energy. As of now, the work on installing solar panels for the borewells in the park is on.

The conversion to solar power project , implemented by the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL), is set at Rs 1 crore. As part of the project, 10 solar power plants of 200 MW each would be set up at all the guard posts in the park, along with an 8-KW grid-solar hybrid power plant at the Dr Salim Ali Convention Centre and another similar plant near the park's entrance.

"Keoladeo would be the first national park in the country to be free of conventional energy sources. Apart from the offices and guest house, even the lights in the forest area will run on solar energy. The project is expected to be complete by October,'' deputy chief wildlife warden and director Anoop K R said.

Pink City emerges as country’s best bargain for holiday destination

Quote:
JAIPUR: The first ever travel cost index holiday options for Indians on a shoe string budget, rates Jaipur as the least expensive destination in India. In a recent TripIndex survey, a unique price comparison initiative by a travel website, Jaipur emerges as the least expensive holiday destination for Indians with a total TripIndex cost of barely Rs 3933. Agra comes second with a TripIndex of Rs 4,573.

The survey rates various destinations on the affordability factor. According to Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor (India), "TripIndex is a cost comparison of 11 hot tourist and metropolitan cities in India as well as 50 key tourist cities of the world, tracked against the Indian Rupee."

TripIndex is the first of its kind Travel Price Index which provides Indian travellers an insight into holiday spots that fit their budget."

TripIndex is based on the combined cost of one night's accommodation, a core food item, a beverage and a taxi journey to each destination. "Though the parameters for some of these basic items vary for the domestic and international cost analysis, it still gives a very credible benchmark for travelers to estimate expenditure and compare holiday spots keeping their budget in mind," Ganju said.

Though, Mumbai stood at No. 15 among the most affordable cities in the international list, the survey rates 'Maximum city' Mumbai as the most expensive of all metros when compared to New Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore, with a TripIndex cost of 7,921. Darjeeling, Goa and Kochi have a TripIndex cost of 6175, 6740 and 6125 INR respectively. These vacation hot spots may be less expensive than the metros, but are nearly 25% more expensive than Jaipur and Agra.

The international TripIndex destination list consists of key cities from each of the 50 countries with the largest number of international tourist arrivals, based on data compiled by the UNTWO. On the International favourites among Indian travellers list, Bangkok emerged as the best value international city, beating 49 cities with the TripIndex cost of Rs 5104.15. "Conveniently accessible Asia is the most affordable continent for Indians. Asia has four out of the ten most affordable cities including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and Macau. The estimated cost for the most expensive city on the list, Paris, came to Rs 19,553.9, nearly four times more expensive than Bangkok. Other pricier countries were Zurich, Tokyo, London and New York.

"Value for money is an important consideration for Indian travellers while planning a holiday. UNTWO TripIndex is a great measure to assess the hit on your wallet for some of the most visited places in India and around the world. It will certainly provide realistic expenditure estimates to help travellers plan their trips," Ganju said.

Worried at poaching, Rajasthan launching Project Panther

Quote:
Jaipur : Rajasthan is about to launch the Rs.50 million Project Panther, as a large number of these big cats fall prey to poachers or get killed by villagers after straying into human habitats, a forest official said Tuesday.

The project has been envisaged on the lines of 'Project Tiger' and to begin with will be launched in the protected Kumbhalgarh wildlife sanctuary situated in Pali and Rajsamand districts of the state.

"A lot of discussion is going on about the dwindling numbers of panthers as they are being poached or killed by villages situated near forest areas. Many such incidents have been reported in Rajasthan recently. We aim to come out with steps to save the wild cats before it is too late," said the forest official.

"A budget of Rs.50 million has been earmarked for the five-year-long project. We will be spending Rs.5 million during the first year," the official said.

He said at least a dozen patches in Kumbhalgarh sanctuary have panthers in large numbers. "The caves there, especially in its outer areas, are home to panthers. But a decline in the population of prey for panthers, including rabbits, deer and cheetals has forced them to search for food in nearby residential areas," said the officer.

The villagers kill panthers out of fear, mainly by poisoning them, the officer said, adding it has posed a threat to their existence in the area.

"Under Project Panther, we will start building boundary walls and prohibit grazing of animals in the sanctuary, besides covering the open wells into which straying panthers usually fall," said the officer.

According to a census, there are about 130 panthers in Kumbhalgarh sanctuary alone.

"The project will be extended to other areas after completion of the first phase," said the officer

Out of the total 173 properties in the country, 127 happen to be in Rajasthan.

Quote:
JAIPUR: Heritage hotels are a window to the rich cultural legacy of India. Out of the total 173 properties in the country, 127 happen to be in Rajasthan.

Speaking at the 10th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Heritage Hotels Association (IHHA) on Saturday, Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur, president of IHHA, said, "The heritage hotels today are generating direct and indirect revenue of around Rs 5000 crores. Of which over Rs 500 crores come as revenue from the member properties, as per the general international tourist expenditure trend report. And this is calculated only with 30 per cent occupancy. Any tourist coming to a city ends up spending ten times the money he spends on his accommodation." And this figure would double if the infrastructure like roads, power and connectivity improve. The state government, he said, could play a major role in creating quality infrastructure which would give a fillip to heritage properties, said Gaj Singh.

The unique selling proposition of heritage hotels is that they preserve and open up the rich cultural history and art to the tourists. "If only the government could put 5 % of the revenue earned into improving the infrastructure, the visiting tourists would carry back a positive image of the place," said Aman Nath, who pioneered the trend of heritage hotels with the Neemrana property.

A study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) says that India and China will have the fastest growing tourism industries in the coming 10 to 15 years. The credit though is due to the private entrepreneurs, it is time the government does its bit to facilitate the heritage hotels. The collective efforts of the heritage hotels, Gaj Singh said, have generated vast employment opportunities in the rural areas. The IHHA members, today, are the major contributors to the state's economy.

He pointed out that the association has also made a major contribution in preserving and renovating the heritage properties. The hotels are an important source of foreign exchange earnings, he added.

Prospects for tourism look bright in Rajasthan

Quote:
JAIPUR: The tourism industry in Rajasthan may grow by 17% to 22% this year. On the occasion of World Tourism Day, analysts made this forecast for Rajasthan in 2011-12.

The blasts and recession in recent years caused the state to lose revenue from tourism. As per the predictions, the inflow of foreign tourists, especially from Europe and the UK, is expected to grow this year.

The bookings in five star and seven star hotels for the months of October, November and December indicate the revenue lost in the past two years is likely to be recovered.

"Hotel bookings for the months of November, December and January indicate an increased tourist footfall by 17% to 22%," claimed Khalid Khan, ex-president, Rajasthan Association of Tour Operators (RATO), on Tuesday. "Last year the actual number of foreign tourists visiting the country was around 9 lakh to 10 lakh.

The footfall, going by the advance bookings, is roughly estimated at 15 this year," he said. Heritage hotels, too, expect increased earnings from foreign tourists.

"Despite the fact that countries like the USA and Spain are going through a bad phase in terms of economy, our bookings for October indicate a fairly good season ahead compared to last three years," Randhir Singh, general secretary, Indian Heritage Hotel Association, said.

"Many groups from China, Japan, the UK and Europe coming to visit Delhi, Agra and Jaipur wish to extend their visit in Rajasthan and have sought bookings for cities like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer and Udaipur," Preetam Singh, a New Delhi-based tour operator, said.

He added that the tourists who have come to see the golden triangle have also expressed a desire to stay longer in Rajasthan.

AIPUR: The Nataniyon Ki Haveli, a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectures, could soon become a tourist attraction as the department of archeology and museum has started proceedings to add it to the list of protected monuments.

The magnificent monument, located in the heart of the old city near Choti Chauper, has attracted the attention of the archeology department, which has issued first gazette notification to include this heritage building in the protected monuments of the state.

When around 10 dilapidated buildings in the Walled City collapsed in rains in the past three years, this initiative of the archeology department is a positive step towards safeguarding the heritage of the Walled City.

At present, Nataniyon Ki Haveli is under the possession of the police department. When it is restored, it could become a tourist place. Superintendent, art and culture, Satya Prakash Srivastava, said, "After issuing gazette notification, the department has asked if people have any objections. And after resolving the objections, the department will announce it as a protected monument."

The monument was constructed in the early 18th century when Jaipur was starting to transform into a city. It was occupied by some diwan then, the expert said.

The haveli could be transformed into a tourist place like the Patwon Ki Haveli in Jaisalmer. A department official said, "The haveli has historical importance and its architecture, door design, the art work on walls is a perfect malange of Muslim and Hindu architecture."

Recently in 2006, the old Vidhan Sabha was declared as protected monument. Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar are among other protected monuments.

There are 319 monuments in the list of protected monuments in the entire state owing to their historical importance and exquisite ancient architecture. In Jaipur, there are around 60 to 65 such protected monuments, an official of the archeology department said.

The state government has started the restoration work and around Rs 60 lakh will be spent initially, an official said.
