TATARSTAN republic, RUSSIA, public spaces upgrade and creation

The republic of TATARSTAN (with its capital city of KAZAN) is on of the most prosperous, vibrant and fast developing regions of Russia.

In recent years it became famous on a federal level for its public spaces renewal and creation of dozens of new ones. Here I will post some examples not only from the capital city (Kazan), became known as a host of international sport events, as the World Cup of 2018, but from other cities, towns and villages of Tatarstan, as well.

I am not a good photographer myself so I am using russian top bloggers posts, federal and regional media reports.

More of the KABAN lakefront in KAZAN

In 2015 international competition was won by this project of a Chinese bureau Turenscape. Thought as an environmental project, the main task of it was to restore and preserve the ecosystem of the lake. The designers removed all drains, including illegal sewer taps, covered shores with plants and built a water treatment cascade system.

PUBLIC SPACES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM in TATARSTAN

The program was a recipient of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019.

Tatarstan’s Soviet period, beginning in 1920’s, saw much modernist construction and hierarchical centralised planning, with diverse urban locations made to look alike. Many mosques and churches were destroyed, leaving their associated public spaces functionless. The post-Soviet era, since the Republic of Tatarstan’s foundation in 1992, brought freedom of movement and an exodus from rural towns. Also, a return to private real-estate ownership enabled wealthy individuals and businesses to buy up large swathes of land, notably in scenic lakeside and forest areas, thus limiting the population’s recreation options in most post-soviet countries.

The ambitious Public Spaces Development Programme seeks to counter these trends and to offer an equal quality of environment to all Tatar citizens, regardless of settlement size – as well as reinstating a sense of individual place in each. From its inception by the President of Tatarstan in 2015 until the end of 2018, it had transformed 328 spaces across each of the Republic’s 45 municipal districts, covering 33 villages, 42 towns and two major cities, and embracing both Soviet and longer-standing historical settings.

There are ten different project types: water bodies; ponds; embankments; beaches; parks; public gardens; boulevards; squares; streets; and walkways. Most include infrastructure for cultural activities.

Some projects are initiated by members of the community, others by the state. In all cases the design and implementation process is highly participatory, based on strong engagement with local citizens and extensive consultation of economists, anthropoligists, dendrologists and others.

Just for you to figure out how cities and towns of Tatarstan look like in general I will alter parks, ponds and pedestrian areas posts with the view of the TATAR cities from above.

First comes the capital KAZAN, several years ago the city celebrated its 1000 anniversary.

The Kremlin.

Well, yes and no, there are some similarities, on the other hand the Tartars are muslims so another facet of difference. Economically, yes, it is one of the best developed and prosper Russian regions. To mention that Kazan was joined to Russia by Ivan the Terrible back in the XVI century, so much more time together. Location is in the middle of Russia in the big Volga region and a high percentage of Russians living there, a lot more of a cultural and, also, ethnic mix. Linguistically the Tartars kept their language better than any other Volga region autonomous republic.

Parts of initially one big forest, after being surrounded by new districts, converted into a park of three parts:

Gorkinskiy forest - area for skiing and cycling,
Ometyevskiy forest - ecological area with paths for hiking,
Middle forest - area for family recreation.

Wow, I would never have considered visiting Tatarstan before, but now I do! The public spaces are really well designed and great looking.

Your pictures gave me the idea to explore Kazan on Google Streetview ; the city centre is beautiful.

Another place to add to my list of places to visit! Thanks for posting these pictures!
