That was also my personal conclusion. Innsbruck is not as famous or popular as it should be. The abundance of students and younger people is a boost. While Salzburg was more "beautiful" in the European, cultured way, Innsbruck felt more vibrant and alive.

INNSBRUCK: Landhausplatz and Main Station

Moving even farther East, you’ll get to the square where the Tirol State Government offices are located, and then main train station. Definitely not a pristine touristy environment, this is nonetheless a chance to see real life in an Austrian city.

DOWNTOWN INNSBRUCK

Continuing East, you get to the commercial heart of Innsbruck, with chain and local boutiques, the odd mall and a bunch of places to eat.

INNSBRUCK: Landtiroler Museum Ferdinandeum

Just East of the Old Town, you’ll find this, the Tyrolean State Museum, also called the Ferdinandeum after the Emperor who established it in the 19th Century.

INNSBRUCK: Stadtturm

The observation platform inside the simply called City Tower offers great views of Innsbruck. Not particularly high, but it will give you a fresh perspective of this city’s enviable location.

INNSBRUCK: Häuserzeile Mariahilf

INNSBRUCK

Just North of the old town, where the river gently bends West, you’ll see the frequently photographed sight of a row of colourful Reinaissance houses with the Nordkette peaks rising behind. The street (and city district) they’re in is Mariahilfe, a discretly affluent neighborhood. Let’s leave the selfie-takers behind, cross the river and go check the houses from up close.

SALZBURG: University

Also semi-hidden in plain view is the central campus of the University, founded in 1622 as a Benedictine college.

SALZBURG: Spherae

Just beyond Cathedral square, you get to the inner courts and squares of the former palaces of the Archbishops. The big Sphere sculpture by German artist Stephan Balkenhof dominates Kapitelplatz.

SALZBURG: Cathedral Square

The Cathedral of Salzburg is big, but you could actually miss it if you don't go into one of the pedestrianized streets and archways leading into its square. Now, why would such a small city need such a huge Cathedral? Well, the same question could be asked in many European cities, but in the particular case of Salzburg, you have to remember that this was a place where political and religious power were concentrated in a single person: the Prince-Archbishops who governed until the 19th Century. This whole town and its cultural and architectural wealth resulted from the wealth of this religious élite.

SALZBURG

A boat tour of the Salzach River is a treat, even if the views of the spires, domes and fortresses of Salzburg are mostly hidden at water level. You'll pass large, elegant villas and get a glimpse of the Alps in the near distance.

INNSBRUCK: Servitenkirche

The Church visible just beyond the gate is St Joseph, a 17th Century church redone in the baroque style.
