I'm impressed with Meridian Gate and the decorative brickwork - a pleasant change from much mundane stuff one sees. I thought for a moment that this was a warehouse conversion but on closer observation, I see it is a new build. Excellent large 'warehouse-type' windows. Let's hope Britain is becoming more imaginative with his house building than it's been in the past 20 years.

It's a pity they can't plant semi-mature trees instead of saplings, which take years to establish themselves if they are not indiscriminately damaged in the meantime.

Well it's CZWG, which is why it has a whiff of 1980s PoMo Docklands about it. The green balconies though, yeuch!

Looking at the development website the Meridian Gate area is by far the largest. Will the other buildings be in the same style as the green-balcony 1980s-yuppie-style ones, or is there going to be a mix?

In general it's nice to see the development has mixed different designs between areas, and the town houses especially should be inspiration for non-London areas that need to densify, but not to the same level that London needs. Looked recently at my home town in the North (Wakefield) and was shocked that every single new development is still the 'executive' Barratt box low-density housing with tiny windows that's been built for decades now. The mass house builders could really get some inspiration from Kidbrooke.

Meridian Gate (Phase 4) will continue with the same style:

Like Aylesbury-Ferrier should have been listed.A far better place than what's replaced it.

I'd like to hear your rationale behind that.

Major changes are being planned for the rest of the master plan. SE9 you might want to attend the four-day exhibition at the Kidbrooke Information Centre, off Tudway Road:

Friday 7th March 2-7pm
Saturday 8th March 11am-4pm
Monday 10th March 5pm8pm
Wednesday 12th March 5pm8pm

The revised proposals are looking to expand the number of residential units from 4000 to 5049. This includes densification of the remaining quarters, with a 20 story tower planned for the Blackheath quarter, and the already approved tower at the Kidbrook Village Centre being increased in height to 30 stories.

The public consultation leaflet can be found here: http://www.kidbrookeregeneration.info/

I was only able to make a very brief visit due to time constraints, but here's some feedback from the public exhibition.

  • Phase 4: this phase has been scaled-back in area to allow for a higher density Phase 5. The buildings of P5 have some architectural similarities to those in P4, but look quite uninspired. The exhibition boards should be uploaded in the next few days.
  • Phase 3: the hotel plan has been shelved due to a lack of interest. In its place, a 31 storey centepiece residential tower designed by Studio Egret West. It'll be clad in white/off-white brick with the central 'trunk' clad in metallic brass coloured material. They hope to have this complete around 2018. Massing:

Cheers SE9.

I'm not sure what to make of the tower. I can't shake the feeling that it will be a little out of place here, surrounded by suburbia.

It will definitely be a standout structure in terms of size. I personally warmed to it because it'll break up the monotony of the consented phase 3 plans, in which there's several midrises of exactly the same roof height.

There were several drawings of the tower but I didn't manage to get a photo (busy hall and time constrained).

King Kong for Kidbrooke

A giant 30 storey tower is being planned for the Kidbrooke ‘village’ development, SEnine understands.

It will be the largest building for several miles around, becoming a major landscape feature and will be flanked by other new blocks rising up to 20 storeys.

A planning application is due later this month from Berkeley Homes who hope to start construction before the end of the year.
