Anything to do with the tripling of tuition fees I wonder?

I'd says Birmingham's current resurgence can be linked to the three main universities building program of the last 7 years.

They must have spent over a billion pound between them during that time.

UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING BID TAKES STEP FORWARD

University’s School of Engineering bid takes step forward
The University of Birmingham's plan to construct a new School of Engineering has taken a major step forward after the city council approved the demolition of its Alta Biosciences building.

The single-storey building is located at the main Edgbaston campus.

The construction of the replacement building will be the subject of a separate application.

A statement on the university's website said: "The university has begun work on a new School of Engineering, due for completion in 2020. It will bring together many engineering disciplines into one state-of-the-art building. It will also incorporate a new centre of excellence in rail innovation, bringing industry into the heart of our campus.

"The University of Birmingham is committed to providing the best academic buildings for the benefit of students, staff and researchers in the School of Engineering.

"The new building will provide different and more flexible ways of working that will use the space to its best advantage.

"The new School of Engineering will host a world class centre of excellence in rail in partnership with industry, focusing on digital systems.

"Funded as part of the newly-created UK Railway Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN), it will focus on railway control and simulation, data integration and cybersecurity, condition monitoring and sensing, and improved methods for technology introduction."

A new research centre which will focus on digital systems in the rail industry has launched at the University of Birmingham.

The centre is one of four across the country backed by £92 million of investment which will see eight universities team up with businesses to work on developing new products and technology.

Called the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network, it is aimed at giving the rail industry access to purpose-built facilities and skills in a range of areas to support research, development and innovation.

The Centre of Excellence in Digital Systems is being led by the University of Birmingham at its campus in Edgbaston, with work starting next month on a purpose-built hub to house its staff, due to open in spring 2020.

Around 25 new jobs are also due to be created over the coming year at the centre which will be housed in existing buildings until its new home is completed

They're really starting to fill in the gaps on campus and using inefficient space better.

Interesting to see what their plans are when this space is gone.

Not too sure if this has been shared before but this is an overview of the proposed 600 million spend at the University of Birmingham Estate. This compliments the Interactive Development Map and works is due to be completed by 2021.

New render and a start this month!

Quote:
Willmott Dixon has secured the £46.5m contract to deliver a new home for the University of Birmingham’s School of Engineering.

It is the second major project award for the University this year, bringing the value of work to nearly £90m.

The School of Engineering was formed by the University just over two years ago and includes the disciplines of civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electronic, electrical and systems engineering.

Work starts this month, on the new building that will be home to both the School of Engineering and UKRRIN Rail Digital Systems Innovation Centre (DSIC).
