Τitle:Christ

Artist:
Konstantinos Parthenis

Original Title: Ο Χριστός
Date: c.1900
Style: Symbolism
Genre: religious painting
Media: oil, canvas
Location: National Art Gallery (Alexandros Soutzos Museum), Athens, Greece
Dimensions: 200 x 200 cm

https://www.wikiart.org/en/konstanti...is/christ-1900

Quote:
This monumental circular composition by Konstantinos Parthenis depicting the over-life-size head of Christ rivets the eye of the visitor to the National Gallery. Christ, here a mature bearded man wearing the crown of thorns, turns his tearful, agonized gaze heavenward. A torrent of yellow-gold light replaces the halo and bathes the divine face, bestowing on it an otherworldly glow and emphasizing its modeling.

The humanized dogma and the dramatic rendering of the Passion belong to the iconography of the Catholic Church as it was formulated in the time of the Counter-Reformation and dominated the Baroque (17th century). Parthenis’ Christ belongs to a typology frequently encountered in El Greco, but this specific composition appears to be inspired by a similar circular composition by Guido Reni. The subject, the emotional charge, the dominant blue palette, and the pointillist technique classify this mature work by Parthenis within the Symbolism of the Vienna Secession, where he did his apprenticeship as a young painter.

Gyzis Nikolaos (1842 - 1901) Behold the Bridegroom Arriving, 1899-1900 Oil on canvas, 200 x 200 cm
Γύζης Νικόλαος (1842 - 1901) Ιδού ο Νυμφίος έρχεται

Εθνική Πινακοθήκη, National Gallery, Athens, Greece.

https://www.nationalgallery.gr/en/pa...-arriving.html

Quote:
Nikolaos Gyzis had strong religious and metaphysical feelings and questions in the latter part of his life. It is in this context that the magnificent, transcendental work on the Second Coming was born. The artist did many studies in preparation for this work. Some of them, verging on the abstract, their protagonist being the light, are on display adjacent to this work. Christ appears on the throne, illuminated against a golden-purple background. Golden clouds form homocentric circles around him. Golden rays emanate from the figure of Christ across the entire work. The Coming of the Saviour is heralded by four angels with trumpets, while Archangel Gabriel is flying above on the top of the composition. Myriads of angels are kneeling on the great staircase which frames the scene, leading to Christ, celebrating his coming. The work is also inspired by the Apocalypse of St John, but Gyzis, as he wrote in a letter, did not see Christ as a punisher and avenger, but as a sweet god who came to bring to the world light, salvation and comfort.

Wow! It looks heavenly! Love how he painted the halo.
I'm always amazed about how Byzantine artists initially painted the halo. There's a 12 century monastery in the mountains above my hometown. The monastery possesses a large collection of Byzantine frescoes, it lays on an older structure that archaeologists said was dedicated to either Apollo, or Artemis. They never knew about it, but the ins went on fire, and that's when they found about it, the church wasn't affected by the fire. It is currently under reconstruction.
Last time we went hiking with my friends, there was a large group of hikers from Greece. It was April so the area was slippy from all the rain, they were all very respectful and helpful, a great group.
Also, if more people had Γύζης Νικόλαος's perception about Christ, or God - it would've been a happier world.

I agree, the 'Behold the Bridegroom Arriving' is a painting of pure and blissful light and especially in real life looks absolutely stunning, also the small preliminary studies for this are beautiful. I hope that next year they will return to their home, the building of the National Gallery that is under a heavy restoration and expansion. Nikolaos Gyzis is considered as the most important 19th century Greek painter and at the last years of his life he created a vast number of paintings with religious and symbolic subjects. Generally I love his work but this period is by far my favourite and this is another beloved piece of his art.
