DISCUSS: Using Darwin as a hub

Why use Singapore, when we have a city that is nicely possitioned to use as a hub. I know that Singapore is already an established hub, and the competition would be huge, but if Singapore wasn't there to use, would Darwin work?

Why would you fly Melbourne/Sydney/Adelaide/Perth/Brisbane-Darwin-Hong Kong/Shanghai/KL/Bangkok/Tokyo when you can, and Qantas & other carriers do, fly direct?

Qantas' new fleet orders of 787 was done so they can fly smaller planes on more point to point routes, not put everything through a hub for the sake of it.

Maybe the A380s which go onto London, but why would you hub out of Darwin when they can make a shitload more money out of Singapore?

Anywhere on the East coast to North America is quite literally stupid.

Qantas doesn't operate that many flights through Singapore in a day. I'm guessing but it couldn't be more than a dozen. This would hardly justify spending billions upgrading Darwin Aiport so that it could handle large aircraft. Qantas also code shares through Singapore with airlines like BA, AF and Finnair as Qantas doesn't actually fly to many places in their own right these days. They gave upon Paris, Rome, Bahrain, Manchester etc, etc so a hub within Australia would serve no purpose as there would be no connecting flights. This might change with the 787 as the economics of some of these destinations will make more sense but you still wouldn't run them out of Darwin.

It's a hot idea but right now Darwin does not offers much more than warm weather, confiscated Indonesian fishing vessels, crocs and inebriated indigenous locals. I think they need a little more before it could be come an effective hub.

What about all the Monsoons Darwin gets in the Wet season? Wouldn't that be an inconveniance to the Dozens of jumbos it would be getting daily?

Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur all suffer from monsoons - would it really make that much difference? I don't think at this stage it's a problem of weather. It's more a problem of nothing to offer!

The fact is really darwin doesnt offer anything. I mean if you were flying and you had a choice out of Darwin, Singapore or Dubai as a stop over on your flight to asia or europe. What would you choose?

Why would Perth people bother back tracking to darwin before heading into asia or europe? and why would sydney melbourne etc go to darwin before heading to the USA?

If Singapore wasn't there, another souther asian city would have taken its place. KL probably for one?

On the other hand, why use Darwin and spend billions in the process, when there is a city nicely positioned and established hub called Singapore

Well it would boost Darwins economy and might even start a boom in the region.

If Darwin was the stopover instead of Singapore - there might be a young Victorian man still alive today! Dammit If we can save just one life then it's worth doing!

A shoit load of desal plants would have to be opened before darwin can even be envisaged to be a 'hub'.

No chance of DRW becoming a hub. There is practically no reason for creating one. One of the major factors in becoming a hub is being home base to a major airline. Besides..the trend is more and more for point to point flights bypassing hubs.
