How do they keep the sand out? Sandstorms must dump a lot of sand on the site...?

I think a bigger concern about the sand is the grinding effect on windows, etc.

At pavilions at our Dutch beaches (like restaurants, shops), sometimes hardened glass is used, although it is expensive. Often not feasible.
Standard glass only lasts 1-2 seasons. After 2 years, it's impossible to see through it.

Yes.Obviously they will use hardened glass because of wind pressure on the structure. But what about now, while the construction is going on?
The sand wouldn't be an issue for concrete pours?

No.
Concrete itself consists of sand for a large part. So a - relative - little bit of sand added by a sandstorm is not an issue.

Sandstorms can make working itself less comfortable. But I expect in KSA construction workers are used to it, and can deal with it.

Another burden is that crane operations have to be stopped at heavy winds (in Western Europe, that is at 7 Bft in most cases).

There's no debate over how beautiful this building is, its one of the only buildings in the world that can challenge the Shanghai Tower and the Burj Khalifa.
