Extra care mainly because most of the buildings in the walled city are at least a 100 years old, with some of the archeological sites being 500-600 years old too. The vibrations can cause damage to the weakened timber foundations of many of these structures.

Just to give life to this dead thread... asking a question.

Guess which line will go operational first:

1. Apparel Park to Thaltej (with underground section)
or
2. APMC to Motera

APMC to Motera because the metro river bridge and underground section will take some time

==============================

I think, Rushivyas sounds right. APMC to Motera may be operational first.
Reason for East-West line to take more time, is obvious, underground section and a major bridge over the river Sabarmati.

Hey guys, any idea, photos of that river bridge? Tata was constructing Piers for the bridge. Please post here, a request to all local guys.

It has to be APMC to Motera. Underground work will take more time to complete. But, you never know. Sabarmati Bridge work is long pending!

Can we all together visit one of the site on this Sunday? Would be great to know each other!

Wow, yes it is.

I wonder why BRTS is not included? It is mass transit too. Same for Mumbai local.

wait for metro just got longer by 2 yrs

If you thought you would finally be able to catch a ride on the metro rail and escape the city's traffic next year. Think again. The deadline for Metro project has been derailed once again.

Phase I of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, which was expected to be ready by 2020, will be completed only by 2022.

Officials reveal that trouble in land acquisition and prolonged public consultation is delaying the development of the metro. While the tracks are being steadily constructed, officials are reportedly facing trouble where stations are being built as they need to acquire private properties for the purpose.
Highly placed sources at Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation said, "We are facing issues with land acquisition as well as utilities. The tracks can be built in the middle of the road but stations take more space and need to have entry and exit points. For this, we need to acquire private land which is a tough job. Public consultation is a process, and the process takes time. Metro work is going on but the Phase I will be over only by 2022.

Phase I was approved in October 2014 and 6.5-km stretch from Vastral Gam to Apparel Park was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year.
The North-South corridor is 18.87-km long while the East-West corridor is 21.16 km long. Problem areas in East-West corridor include Rabari Colony, Vastral Colony, Kankaria and Shahpur (underground), Stadium, Commerce Six Roads, Doordarshan and Thaltej.

The problem areas in North-South Corridor include Old High Court, RTO Circle, Sabarmati railway station and spot opposite Sabarmati Police Station

Listing the issues they face, the sources said, "We have people asking for greater compensation. The land we are looking at might be owned by non-titled people. We have to fight for property that has been encroached upon. We have to follow the Land Acquisition Act. By law, we can compensate only a certain amount to those who do not actually own the property. We are facing trouble getting land only for exit-and-entry points of stations. We are continuously monitoring the situation."

Confirming that the project will be delayed by two years, GMRC Managing Director S S Rathore said, "The reason is land acquisition problem and utility problem but we are speeding up work. We are expecting the entire Phase 1 to be completed by 2022.'

He added,
"We plan to increase the speed of train, currently at 25 kmph, to 80 kmph in the stretch between Vastral gam and Apparel Park Station. This will happen after we get permission from the Commission of Railway Safety.

We plan to increase the speed by June 2020. More trains will be added. However, frequency of trains will depend on demand in that area."
Recently, GMRC also spent Rs 3.3 crore on resurfacing and patching up roads that were damaged due to the on-going metro work project. Out of the 35-km road covered in metro project, 10 kms needed maintenance.

An honest admission at least, and not a surprise at all. Seeing the amount of work still left and the pace at which they are going, 2020 was never going to be a realistic target.

The only way they can redeem themselves is by starting the work on Phase 2 quickly, which is much easier with very little land acquisition.

Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro II Construction To Begin In June 2020

Construction for the phase II of the Metro rail project between Motera in Ahmedabad and Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, covering a distance of 28.2-km, is expected to begin in June 2020 and get over by March 2024, the officials said on Sunday.
The Union Cabinet had in February this year approved phase II of the project connecting the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday chaired a meeting to know the progress of the metro rail project.

During the meeting, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Managing Director, SS Rathod, informed him that tenders for extending the metro rail from Motera till Mahatma Mandir will be floated soon, a release issued by the state government said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation of the project after inaugurating a 6.5-km stretch of phase I of the project during his visit in March this year.

"Geotechnical investigation work related to the project was undertaken after its foundation-laying ceremony by the prime minister, for which the Centre approved the state's request for Rs. 5,384.17 crore fund," the release said.

"Construction work for the project will begin in June 2020 and is expected to be completed by March 2024," it said.

The first phase of the project costs around Rs. 10,773 crore, for which Japan has extended a soft loan of Rs. 6,066 crore to the Indian government through its funding agency JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).

The Gujarat government and the Centre will each contribute Rs. 1,990 crore for the project.

Phase I of the project covers a distance of 40.03 km, of which 6.5 km is underground and the rest of the stretch is elevated, and is expected to be fully operational by 2021.

In February 2010, the state government had set up GMRC to implement the project.

The way I see it, and hope will pan out, is N-S line upto Motera ready by 2021 end, E-W line ready by mid-2023, and phase 2 by 2024 end. GIFT city link can also be up by 2024, along with the 80 km high-speed rail link to Dholera.

Other rail-based undertakings expected to take shape by then are the new Gandhinagar station (with hopefully more services than before, to reduce burden on Ahmedabad Central), revamped Sabarmati station, the MAHSR and all its associated infrastructure within the city, the new broad gauge line in western Ahmedabad (with which the N-S metro shares tracks) where we might hope for suburban/RRTS services to Ahmedabad's sprawling industrial belts like Changodar, Vatva, Bavla, Aslali, Bareja, Santej, Sanand etc., and a metro-link to the existing SVP Airport (questionable).

Personally, I want to see an LRT system implemented somewhere in the region, maybe GIFT, maybe on either of the riverfront roads, or one of the inner ring roads in the central areas like CG Road.

But interesting times ahead for city rail fans indeed!

Keeping in mind that they have'nt even started work on the Kankaria East station/tunneling, and the other three underground stations are still in the beginning stage, bridge on Sabarmati seems to be going slow, finding it difficult to acquire land for the station entries and elevators, and the land acquisition, demolition, and construction of Thaltej Gam stretch is still yet to start. Giving them 3 full years to carry out all of this.

If the right kind of political pressure is applied, they can do all of these in 2 years too. Let's see.
