Skanska seals £90m Tin Pan Alley scheme
Construction Enquirer
January 2017
Quote:
Skanska is understood to have sealed the job to build the £90m St Giles Circus scheme next to Tin Pan Alley in London.

Client Consolidated Developments is planning a hotel and 800-seat venue and events space building behind London’s world famous music hotspot on Denmark Street, next to Centrepoint.

Designed by architects Orms, the scheme includes two new bronze clad buildings on St Giles High Street as well as the refurbishment of two listed buildings on Denmark Place.

The contractor has been on talks with the client since last year and is now waiting for final site clearance by H Smith (Engineers) before starting the project within the next few months.

What is it now, 7 years since they closed Charing Cross Road and started on all this? And it's nowhere near finished. Get a move on people, it's been a building site for far too long.

When will the new buildings be finished? 5 years from now?

Does anybody have any images of what they're actually doing on Denmark Place? There doesn't seem to be any renders of how the street will work with the new venue backing up to it.

Cheers I did have a look there but there's no actual images of Denmark Place itself (the alley) - only some mention of restoring a couple of listed buildings, unless they meant the death masked buildings on St. Giles High Street?

I saw some drawings a while ago on the Camden planning portal. I think I am right in saying that Denmark Street will be tarted up but pretty much unaltered, though one or two buildings may be death-masked to provide entrances to the new gallery. I may be wrong

Cheers Garethwyn

I was wondering more about Denmark Place which runs parallel just before the development site. It's an alleyway which was actually gated the last time I walked past. It has a tragic past though, maybe it's all coming down too. Heres's a link:

According to this video below, it will remain an alleyway, presumably as an exit path for those leaving the venue after a performance.

Great thanks for posting that - I guess all the buildings along the alley are being restored/developed separately.

I used to love trying the different kebab shacks on this stretch. All gone now. I understand that doners can be unhealthy and a bit passé but as far as I know there is not one single kebab house between Hyde Park and the Tower of London. I’d love to be corrected on my assumption.

In my girlfriend’s ex-mining village of around 5000 people there are two kebab joints (one of which does superb curries). Come on, Central London. Up your game!

Loads of places selling kebabs around Paddington and Marble Arch. They're mostly Arab and Persian restaurants though rather than Turkish and Asian takeaway joints selling doner, chips, etc. Some of those crappy places near Leicester Square with pizzas in the window serve doner kebabs too.

St Giles Circus | St Giles | U/C

I really miss having a proper chip shop in the West End- 3am stumbling out the Astoria and heading next door to Dionysus was a proper tradition! All we have now is the overpriced and branded-within-its-life Poppie’s which I never understand why is popular when you look at the prices.
