im pretty sure that rendering was before the app even went in though? The planning documents showed there would be shaded areas on some windows and the sign is the size that went in for planning

Also back in 2009 on this thread Foxtrot and Woody joked about my Nostradamus-like vision of this becoming a hotel and then I mentioned Auchinleck becoming one to Woody's "never!"
im sure it was much further back than 2009

This looks like the forgotten thread now. Really disappointed about how Cumberland has turned out.

But there is nothing else to talk about, its been redeveloped and opened.
There is no construction taking place anymore.

But maybe it can be moved to the projects built thread instead ????

To be honest I don't see this as a big problem

that render was way before the app went in
the app that did go in clearly showed windows as shaded on the drawings
its bought a huge building back to life and will help with future investment around here
nothing was proposed at ground level bar a small entrance

ok it could have been much better but it is what was proposed and nothing less. Its not exactly an eye sore of a building

agreed it needs moving to complete thread though

It is an eyesore. The thing about how it looked before was just that it looked unloved - which is understandable as it was unused. Now it looks unloved and dated. It looks more in need of bringing back to life than it did when it actually had no life.

There was absolutely nothing in the planning application to suggest that the cladding would be so garish and nasty. They'd have been better off using the same material as the spandrel panels.

A real real shame to see one of the finer postwar buildings in Brum turned into such cheap tat.

Cheap tat is the perfect way to describe it

Is this really cheap tat? That end of Broad Street died down ages ago, the Five Ways shopping arcade is an eyesore, and also the subway. So do you think the broad street area is cheap tat or the building?

Its not cheap tat, its actually a great hotel, but as we (the people of SSC) look at materials of the building rather than how the hotel performs, it comes across as "cheap"

I really like it, I just have a feeling if the concrete beams were painted or clad black, it wouldn't be 'cheap tat'

Dont get me wrong the hotel might well be of a very good standard but im referring to the quality of the materials.
