From Sonko's FB page the tenants have finally agreed to move out after receiving 600k relocation allowance. This will be launched in next couple of weeks.

Just spoke to a friend staying there. She tells me Sonko played a clever game to get the tenants to accept the deal. He and housing CS went to the meeting (attended by less than 50% of tenants) with signed bankers cheques, agreements, etc. When people saw the 600k cheques, they grabbed and signed. Their lawyer who was present tried to convince them to wait for him to read the agreement but they would hear none of it. So, those who were not at the meeting have no choice but go for their cheques. That’s street smart Sonko for you.
Great that this can finally proceed.

The level of entitlement in KE is on the next level. These people have been living almost for free in houses paid for by govt for decades! Most are retired or dead and very few even pay rent, while current employees languish in poverty/live in slums! Then badala ya kushukuru and cooperate, the tax payer has to dig in his pocket to pay these guys??Its one thing to negociate and be given priority when houses are done..but to jeorpadize the whole project coz of greed is just unacceptable!! These guys dont own these properties! 80% of current occupant probably did not even work for the govt!! Kick them out and pay them nothing!! Actually tudai arreas!

Further, there has been at least 6 public participation meetings with the residents where a number of the compensation/acquisition/relocation issues were discussed. At this point, if some of the residents are in the dark, it is mostly due to their lack of meaningful participation in these forums that affect their lives -- this is not surprising, since a lot of people ignore invites to these public participation meetings then feign ignorance when things start happening ![]() Quote:

Andegwa, the offsite rental amount was the biggest contention if my memory serves me right. Some were even demanding they will only move if they get free houses!
Now wait and see all projects that need relocation stall and people demanding for the 600k. With these Kanjo houses what pains me is that 80% of people living in those houses now are there fraudulently and have never worked for Kanjo(I know that was the case in Mariakani and Madaraka). On top of denying current employees a decent roof , they are the ones getting 600k and guranteed housing! Rewarding fraud! Sickening!

Here they have only themselves to blame. You were given 600,000 to relocate and get a 25,000 monthly rental unit for two years. That is a minimum 2 bedroom apartment in most places. In other areas you can also get 3 bedrooms units for that amount. Lakini some prefer to wait for bulldozers and stick to those rundown houses. Let them move, if they thought their was money for resisting then they have learned otherwise.

That section of the city will undergo a real regeneration with those old buildings being replaced.

I see from the Governor's facebook page work on Pangani has started.
Jabavu Village is all systems go for the Jevanjee Bachelor Quarters on Quarry road. Tenants are getting 30 day notice to vacate and relocation package of 600k.
