Feira do Artesanato

Vista parcial das mais diversas obras de artes em costuras, pinturas em telas, entre outras, que não deixa de atrair os olhos das pessoas que alí circulam. Ilha do Cabo, Luanda-Angola.

Data: 2015-12-05

December 2015: Feira Artesano - an organized & established institution in Luanda

...not to be mixed up with the usual traders blocking sidewalks in African cities...this is organized, formal and institutionalized

Angolan women (inside the country and its diaspora) present their hand-made fabrics, handicraft, food....It is beautiful...and the "feira" has steadily grown in size & importance over the years

Se tiver tempo passo lá durante a semana. O problema é que o artesanato angolano mesmo sendo "made in Angola" é sempre caríssimo"!

...which still doesn´t seem to prevent people from buying it.....all of those "feiras" are big successes and have been growing in size and importance!!

And let´s not forget that it is hand-made, so one has to pay for it. I would neither give things away for free or for next to nothing (like hand-made handbags for only $20, clothes for $30 etc.) - if I used my own hands for it...and do not forget some of these exhibitors work together with local charity organisations.

Dear Matthias,

Sometimes is important to listen to other people. Tell me, have you ever shop in one of these markets in Luanda?? Of course not! So, maybe you should listen to someone who has done it several times?

I'm not exactly "poor" to complain about the prices if I hadn't strong reasons to. But if you like the idea of living in a "fantasy reality" that everything in Luanda is sold at a fair price, than go ahead my friend!

Hrrrm, skytrax

excuse me where did I contradict you, please?

First of all, I only said that despite high prices they do seem to be a success and they have grown in size and importance over the years...if they were not successful and generally well received, they would have shut down years ago, wouldn´t say?

Second, hand-made products - many of these people are local designers - are sold at a price. Like it or hate it. The people that go and shop there are aware of it and are willing to pay the price, nonethless...despite the fact that it might be "fantasy-like" and "unfair"....most of the items are not copies but individual and original ones.

Third, as you claim to be not exactly "poor", you should be receptive to the needy around you as these exhibitors partly work together with local NGO´s and need support. This is JUST one channel (among many others, of course) that can be used, in my humble opinion..

Fourth, I am neiter rich nor poor myself, but I am always willing to buy products that are more expensive like the so-called "Fair Trade" - products (coffee, chocolate...)...(I guess that you are aware of the Fair trade label as you lived in Europe for many years yourself). I neither buy clothes at Primark or any of the cheap stores etc - not because of the quality but because of the labour slaves that work for pennies under appaling conditions in the factories in India and Bangladesh. Believe it or not, I am a conscious shopper.

Btw, I am still waiting for your reply to my last PM

OK, if you think these type of markets in Luanda have success because of the few people that shop on it, feel free to think this way. Fact is that I bought things in Luanda's handcraft market before and prices there are all but fair. It is even cheaper than shop in stores like Hugo Boss (I'm just using these as comparison).
But anyway, if you ever come to Luanda, please feel free to take some of these items with you. Our economy will appreciate.

Few people? Of course, it is not a supermarket or a food court in a mall...BUT again, if these are only so "few" people, why are they still there? why have they expanded over the years and have become institutionalized in the mean-time? Why have more and more exhibitors been showing up there? Why have they diversified (feira artesano de Angola is not just at one location once a year??) and why do they plan to open markets in the provinces, too?

Not few people go into raptures about them and generally support what they are doing.

You are certainly not one of them.

Ok.

But do you consider prices of international designer labels "fair" then?

On a sidenote, Hugo Boss sources from India, which means cheap labour often working under not "really favourable" conditions.... but customers in the West and the emerging markets are willing to pay for it huge sums of money - just for the brand name. When it comes to "fairness", I would feel tempted to say that it is anything but "fair".

At least those fabrics & goods are LOCALLY produced, made in Angola. They are not made with cheap manual labour or due to exploitation of impoverished children...and then sold at excessive prices in glossy stores.
No, it is handicraft made in Angola , mostly made by more or less well-to-do women who have a PASSION for what they do and even help local NGO´s with their proceeds. So I needn´t be plagued by a bad conscience when I should ever make up my mind to buy there, even if prices are considered to be "unfair".

LOL, even if I bought the entire goods of the market multiplied by factor X, it would still be a drop into the ocean (only "crumbs") in comparison to what is really needed....but I understand what you allude to.

Nonetheless, let´s continue with pictures now.

Your problem is being too stubborn. But, anyway, you think/do whatever you want..
