I'm with Erebus555 on this.

Why couldn't they have left Cumberland house, and built this where the low level Job Center and assorted low level building on the other side of the road?

Wow, you could actually understand what I typed. Re-reading it, I don't have a clue what my point was!

I guess because they couldn't get their hands on the other side of the road...

IMO this is just the kind of quality and scale of building that Michael Parkinson is on about in order to make the city centre feel more city centre. Lovely.

Yes Cumberland House is alright, and a good reclad would be good, but it is sitting practically empty, the podium is just a carpark with a few units below and it is a waste of space and rundown. A rebuild and change of use at street level will add a new vibrancy to the area, complement BST & Brindley Place and should prompt new development on the other side of the road and along Tennant Street.

On the brighter side too is the fact Brannigans is going

Bio, the city centre does include Broad St - up to the Middleway (and a little down Hagley Road IMO). Since seeing the renders I'm saying Cumberland who.... bring this on - I love it!!

Yeah - that's what I mean - parts of the city centre don't necessarily feel that way.

I love it too - just makes the other side of Broad St look a dump heading up to Fiveways, and the cinema/works whilst good build quality, architecturally are poor

i just really hope that this building does encourage the development of the sites around it. i cant believe that only yards from broad street, we have 2 storey semi detached houses and 3 storey 80's built office blocks. these plots should be worth a mint, and although im not one for moving comunities for aesthetics, this nature of housing is inappropriate, unsustainable and unattractive!

What's happening at Left Bank then?

Bio posted a render on thread 16, post no 293. It hasn't gone for planning so it may all change.

It went for planning ages ago, but has only just been passed. However, I cannot confirm that the render is the same as the planning application

I hope you're right - leftbank is utter, utter cack, an insult to the city.

That sounds like an exam question:

Should Cumberland House be demolished or cleaned up?
Discuss, using your own knowledge and the article.

Its to be demolished, if you go back a few pages there are some pics of whats replacing it.

Well, don't get your spirits up to much. It's going to come back as a heaving behometh at twice the width.
