The last Qantas 747-438 non-ER aircraft (6x -438ER's remaining) was retired at October 13th 2019.
Aircraft data : L/N 1239, MSN 25566, 747-438, VH-OJU, "Lord Howe Island ", delivered Jan 24th 2000.
The aircraft was flown from SYD towards LAX at October 13th (last revenue flight).
However it seems that the aircraft will gain a second live as a RR Testbed, replacing the present RR testbed : 747-267B, N787RR

Below are some picture taken at LAX

Exciting news - after 20 years in service, @Qantas will deliver a much-loved #Boeing747 to us today - ready to be transformed into our new flying testbed. #AVGeek @Boeing

Too bad, I rather had seen one of those stored A340-600's as a new RR engine testbed. But then again, it seems the 747 is the platform of choice for particular needs:
  • SOFIA (747SP) for astronomy
  • engine test beds (all 3 because they all had a engine on offer for the platform at some point): GE with the now retired 747-100 and the current 747-400, PW (2x 747SP) and RR (the current 747-200 and the now "new" 747-400)
  • VVIP aircraft, with VC-25A (and soon VC-25B) as the ultimate pinnacle
  • water bombers
  • super freighters (Dreamlifter)
  • tanker aircraft (Iran/IRIAF only, converted from ex-civilian US aircraft before the 1979 revolution)
  • And then that miserable failed airborne "Star Wars"-like laser, YAL-1

Eventually (10-15 years) PW might have to look out for a newer testbed as the SP's might be reaching their useful cycles/flight hours, as well as general obsolescence. By that time the choices will either be one of the final 747-400's powered by PW4000 engines (similar to what GE did and RR is now doing), or either a A330-300 with PW4168/70 engines. Or in the exceptional case (but very unlikely), a EA GP7200-powered A380.
