MANILA - After nearly 40 years of operation, the iconic Mandarin Oriental Manila hotel will be closing its doors this year.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group on Wednesday announced it will be closing the hotel, located on Makati Avenue, later this year.

"Mandarin Oriental, Manila has been recognized as one of the city’s most iconic hotels since its opening in 1976, and the Group wishes to express its sincere appreciation to all colleagues for their legendary service and support over the years. All hotel colleagues have been informed of the forthcoming closure and will receive full and fair severance payment and appropriate professional guidance,” said Torsten van Dullemen, general manager of the hotel.

Fans of the Mandarin Oriental need not despair, since the group will be managing a new luxury hotel in Makati City.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group said it signed a contract for the branding and management of the luxury hotel, which will open in 2020.

The new Mandarin Oriental, Manila will be owned and developed by Ayala Land Hotels & Resorts. With 275 rooms, the hotel is being positioned as one of the leading luxury hotels in the Philippine capital.

"The new Mandarin Oriental, Manila, which is scheduled to open in 2020, will be part of a mixed-use development centrally located within Makati City," it said. No other details were disclosed.

The Mandarin Oriental opened in 1976 as Manila’s pre-eminent hotel.

While the Mandarin Oriental Manila has been a "much-loved icon," the company noted its "infrastructure and existing facilities are no longer in keeping with the Group’s well-recognized, luxury hospitality offering."

I hope they will tap Handel Architects for this project (same architect of PSE Building, Shangri-La at The Fort, and East Gallery Place).

Mixed-used development centrally located within Makati City developed by the Ayalas? I can only think of 2: Circuit Makati and the proposed Makati North development.

I think it is different from what you've mentioned.

According to the industry grapevine, Ayala Land, which itself has gone into the hotel management business, plans to demolish the 1976-built Mandarin Oriental and integrate the redevelopment of the isolated intersection with its flagship One and now Two Roxas Triangle residential towers across the estero.

But the article at abs-cbnnews.com says that the new Mandarin Oriental will be located at a mixed use development of Ayala Land, centrally located in Makati. Not BGC as what Vic Agustin said in his column. The GM of Mandarin Oriental Manila was the one who said so.

Nakuryente na naman si Vic Agustin. Sana before he writes a column, tanungin niya muna mga tiga Mandarin Oriental.

Well baka nga sa NOMA. I dont think there's a hotel nearby and im sure there's a demand for it. A number of BPOs are stationed in that area. Even BPOs along gil puyat can be a captive market.

Me too! Although the hotel described in NOMA has 300 rooms (Mandarin article states 275) and is scheduled to be turned-over by Q4 2018 (Mandarin article states 2020).

Especially RCBC, tons of expats/folks on business trips over there. We also have GT, LKG and the planned offices in NOMA.

Hindi naman siguro coz the article didn't say naman that it will be located in the Fort. It just said that Ayala will offer Mandarin a better location in the Fort as consuelo for termination of the contract. And that article came out about 2 months ago so many things could have happened as to where the final offer would be. I think NOMA is more likely than Circuit since it is nearer the Makati CBD. Plus the fact that it is targeted for opening only on 2020 bolsters that possibility. However, I don't think that BPO people are their target market.

Yung Mandarin Oriental sa New York sobrang luxurious, yung sa Makati, parang napag iiwanan. Tama talagang sinabi nila that the current infra is no longer in keeping with the luxury brand.

Why? You think BPO people are cheap? We have visitors from financial hub sites, global firms, supranational institutions, central banks, regulators whole year round. Do you think we house them in microtels?

Ayala Land to develop new Mandarin hotel

ABS-CBNnews.com | Posted at 06/05/2014 12:04 PM | Updated as of 06/05/2014 12:04 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Ayala Land will be developing the new Mandarin Oriental Manila hotel.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, Ayala Land said its subsidiary AyalaLand Hotels and Resorts Corp. has signed a long-term management agreement with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to develop and operate a luxury hotel in Makati City.

"This is in line with the company's thrust of expanding its hotels and resorts business portfolio," Ayala Land said.

The new Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which will have 275 rooms, is scheduled to open in 2020.

The location of the hotel has yet to be disclosed.

On Wednesday, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group announced it was closing the Mandarin Oriental Manila, located along Makati Avenue, later this year.

"Mandarin Oriental, Manila has been recognized as one of the city’s most iconic hotels since its opening in 1976, and the Group wishes to express its sincere appreciation to all colleagues for their legendary service and support over the years,” said Torsten van Dullemen, general manager of the hotel.

The Mandarin Oriental Manila opened in 1976.
