COMAC | ARJ-21

First Chinese-made regional jet makes maiden passenger flight
Excerpt

SHANGHAI, June 28 (Reuters) - China's first locally built regional jet made its maiden commercial flight on Tuesday, carrying 70 passengers from the western city of Chengdu to Shanghai on the east coast in what state-owned planemaker Commercial Aircraft Corp of China Ltd (COMAC) hailed as a milestone.

Chengdu Airlines flight EU6679 took two hours and 12 minutes and was "an important milestone in the development of civil aviation in China", COMAC said in a statement.

"Chinese skies for the first time have welcomed a passenger jet developed by China," it said.

The ARJ-21 is designed to compete with similar small passenger jets produced by Brazil's Embraer SA and Canada's Bombardier Inc.

COMAC would continue to "optimize the design of the jet, push forward at a serialised and industrialised pace, and develop domestic and overseas markets," COMAC Chairman Jin Zhuanglong told reporters at Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport after the plane landed.

"We will make efforts to build the ARJ-21 as a new calling card for China's high-end equipment manufacturing industry," he said.

China is keen to establish itself as a global supplier of aircraft and is also developing the C919 narrowbody jet, which it hopes will compete with Boeing Co's 737 and Airbus Group SE's A320. It also plans to produce a larger widebody plane in a joint venture with Russia.

However, it has been held back by inexperience, a shortage of local aerospace design and engineering talent, as well as a lack of home-grown companies with the technology to help drive the project, say aerospace industry sources familiar with its programmes. The challenges have led to multiple delays for both the C919 and the ARJ-21.

The ARJ-21, which seats about 90 passengers, was given permission to fly domestically by China's civil aviation regulators at the end of last year - more than 10 years behind its original schedule.

It has not received certification from other regulators such as the United States' Federal Aviation Administration, which means that only airlines in China and those that recognise the Chinese certification process will be able to operate the aircraft.

Allegedly a reboot of the MD-80 with some MDD tooling used to make it. This plane was a long time coming, announced in 2002 or 2003.

Local aircraft lessor buys 30 ARJ-21s
China Daily Excerpt
July 13, 2016

China Aircraft Leasing Group has bought 30 ARJ-21 regional jets and signed options for 30 more in a deal potentially worth $2.3 billion.

The planes would be used by an unnamed Indonesian airline in which CALC's parent, Hong Kong-based investment firm Friedmann Pacific Asset Management, plans to invest in, the leasing company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 78-90 seater jets will be delivered over the next five years, and Chinese State-owned plane maker Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd will set up maintenance and after-sales offices in Indonesia as part of the deal.

The leasing firm, which ordered 20 of Comac's larger C919 narrow-body planes in 2012, said the latest deal reflected its confidence in China-made aircraft, and allowed it more flexibility to provide leasing options for airlines.

CALC has 70 Airbus and Boeing aircraft and said that it has another 103 Airbus planes on order, allowing it to expand its fleet to 173 air craft by 2022.

In a separate statement, Comac said it had also received another order for 30 ARJ-21 jets from AVIC Leasing, a subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China. It did not disclose the value of the deal.

The orders are a boost for the ARJ-21, which is more than 10 years behind its original schedule and had its first commercial flight with Chengdu Airlines in end-June.

BEIJING—Comac is moving ahead with plans for volume production of the ARJ21, while working to overcome what officials acknowledge as shortcomings in the regional jet’s reliability. Although only two ARJ21s have entered service since the type’s first delivery in November 2015, a further five will be handed over this year, a program source says. A long-planned executive-transport version will fly in 2018. China’s persistence with the ARJ21 is a sign of what can be ...

China's top airlines to buy ARJ21 jets from COMAC
Excerpt

BEIJING, Aug 30 (Reuters) - China's three biggest state-owned airlines on Friday announced deals to each purchase 35 ARJ21-700 regional jets from state planemaker Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).

Air China, China Southern Airlines Co Ltd and China Eastern Airlines said in separate stock filings that the order is worth $1.33 billion each, based on list prices.

Deliveries were scheduled from 2020 through 2024.

The almost identical announcements from the major airlines may signal an acceleration in the developments of the jet as Beijing seeks to promote its first domestically manufactured jet despite a slow start to sales and production hiccups.

The carriers said the aircraft purchases were aimed at boosting capacity in their regional markets.

China Eastern this month rebranded its Eastern Jets business which operates in general aviation as Air 123 to include public transportation services.
