Even without a CFRP fuselage, the MS-21 will have more composite parts compared to the A320neo and 737 MAX. Also, those two planes are improvements on decades old designs, while the MS-21 is the first clean sheet design, which is another advantage.

But the 737 and A320 are much more optimized consider thousands have been produced. I hope the MS-21 won't have as much issue with early frames being overweight such as the SSJ, B787, and A380.

Beginning of PD-14 engine flight tests is reported to be scheduled for May-June 2015 with Ilyushin 76LL ('flying laboratory').

We will see if UAC manages to actually get it to fly in 2016. It seems like almost all airliner projects are delayed these days.

Maiden flight in 2016 plan is confirmed by one of Irkut top managers as well. According to presidenf of UAC, Rollout is scheduled for the end of this year. There's also a plan to display MS-21 fuselage at the upcoming MAKS-2015 air show in August.

I think that the clean sheet advantage stems from the MS21 being a little bigger in general than the A320 and B737. Looking at where the NEO is outshining the MAX is at the top end, and that's something MS21 should capitalize on, particularly on fast tracking the -400 and improving its range.

Also it turned out lately that MS-21 program had in fact been affected by politics. 'Aviadvigatel' - PD-14 producer - claims that initially there were two versions of combustor for the engine: the one made by 'Aviadvigatel' itself, and the other one - by 'ZMKB Progress' in Zaporozhye (Ukraine) which was 'very promising', but the project was frozen. There's a good chanse PD-14 with Ukrainian combustor would have been slightly cheaper than with the Russian one.

I think they will, the SSJ has found western airline orders. If the Russians can sort out parts supply improved servicing they should get sales.

I think this will be really successful if the Russians give some effort with good planning
