hkskyline's 2019 in Taipei

Tamsui is located north of the city near the river mouth into the East Sea. This area has a colourful colonial history. The Spanish were the first Europeans to arrive, followed by the Dutch, then Chinese immigrants. The British came after the port opened to foreign trade in 1860 and tea was exported out of here. Some of the architecture remains today.

Oxford College was the first Western university on the island. The building was used from 1882 to 1901 as a boys' school thanks to funding from George Mackay's hometown friends. Mackay was a Canadian missionary who married a local and lived in the area until his death in 1901.

Neighbouring streets also have more historical buildings that are now part of Aletheia University.

Taiwan is a great place to eat well without killing your wallet. Try a local specialty, fatty pork on rice, at a hole-in-the-wall style eatery. Their lack of fancy decorations proves they have survived the test of time and competition from prettier, better air-conditioned restaurants.

Moving up the value chain, Smith & Wollensky's restaurant in Nanshan Plaza has great views of the city and is famous for steaks. However, I went for a more lighter fish option.

One floor below, Saffron 46 serves Indian cuisine in a modern setting. Tables by the window have a minimum charge, and prices here are quite reasonable for the quality.

The Okura Hotel's huge Yamazato restaurant offers a variety of Japanese food ranging from from tempura, sushi bar, teppanyaki, to washoku.

Da Wan offers a bar-style setting with staff barbecuing premium beef in front of patrons.

After a satisfying meal, try a jelly dessert and pick your toppings to go with it. Typical choices include lemon, red bean, and an assortment of chewy balls/bubbles.
