SBP narrows down choice for Gilas Coach

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas or SBP has narrowed down the choice of Head Coach of Gilas Pilipinas to 2. SBP did not name the two final candidates but there were some reports naming Tab Baldwin and Ryan Gregorio but another report mentioned Tab Baldwin and Jong Uichico as the final choice for Gilas Coach.

Who do you think should be the next Gilas Pilipinas Head Coach, Tab Baldwin, Ryan Gregorio or Jong Uichico?

Tab Baldwin honored to be considered for Gilas coach, believes a lot of Filipino coaches also qualified
Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Friday, November 21, 2014 · 1:29 am

With the criteria for the selection of the next head coach of the Philippine national men’s basketball team already laid out, Talk ‘N Text consultant Tab Baldwin is considered to be a strong candidate to succeed former Gilas coach Chot Reyes.

The former New Zealand head coach considered it an ‘honor’, though, he admitted that despite his extensive coaching resume, there is one thing he lacks experience in.“One thing I don’t have is coaching Filipino players. That’s something I’ve never done in the past,” Baldwin told InterAksyon.

Baldwin, who coached the Tall Blacks to a semifinal stint in the 2002 FIBA World Championship and the Lebanon national team to a Stankovic Cup title in 2010, also had plenty of success in the professional ranks, winning multiple championships in the NBL.Everything included in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ criteria appears to favor Baldwin, who came in as a coaching consultant of Gilas Pilipinas and helped the team to a return trip to the World Cup after 40 years.

Despite his vast knowledge in coaching the game, Baldwin feels like his exposure to Philippine basketball has been a learning experience.“There are things which were done (by Filipinos) that are very surprising to me. They’re different than any player that I’ve coached in the world. They have a level of confidence, which explains a lot of what happened in the World Cup,” said Baldwin.

He believes that there are some other candidates that are qualified for the job.“I know there are some excellent coaching candidates in the country, guys that have experience coaching internationally and a lot of experience coaching Filipino players,” he added.

He is pleased, though, that his name is in the mix for the national team post.“It’s an honor to be considered for the job. I’m very excited and happy to be considered,” he added.

Timing perfect as vastly improved Troy Rosario gets ready to make jump to PBA

TROY Rosario plans to enter the PBA draft as early as next year after helping National University win its first UAAP men's basketball championship in six decades. The late-blooming big man from Cagayan province has drawn a lot of attention from scouts after a breakout season that saw him average a career-best 11.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs on the way to winning Most Improved Player honors.

Nice one Sir Boyet, hope they would consider him as next prospect. Indeed a future of Ph basketball, @ 6"7' he can be perfect for power forward post, asset for rebounding and defense. The next Rommel Adducul as well..

Love to see more Tall Cagayanos in national pool.

AWESOME Line up sir, though you need great point guards who can defend well and can match up with those big guards in an international games. Include Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz, as they can play well in the Dribble Drive System that Tab Baldwin might apply as well.

Chris Lutz plays natural point guard in the US. You can count on him as the court general too.

These 2 players are in the peek of their career, they could serve the national team for the next 5 years. Hope SMB group would allow them if Gilas chose them eventually.

Gilas coach to be named before year-end, says PBA commissioner

THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will name a new Gilas Pilipinas head coach in December as the selection committee continues with the process of making its recommendation as to who will handle the national team for the next few years. PBA commissioner Chito Salud, one of the members of the selection committee, said a Gilas coach will certainly be named before the year ends.

sir raj.....With all due respect to Uichico, who is a PBA champion coach and former Gilas deputy, Baldwin clearly becomes the better choice.

tab baldwin
International Experience and Credentials
But for good measure, here are more reasons why Baldwin should get the SBP’s nod:

1. International Experience and Credentials
There should be no debate that when it comes to credentials, especially in international competitions, no coach in the Philippines can hold a candle to Baldwin. The 56-year old American-New Zealander has been coaching for over 30 years, almost half of which in FIBA competitions. Even if we combine the international experiences of all our great local coaches including Tim Cone, Chot Reyes, Norman Black, Jong Uichico, Yeng Guiao and Robert Jaworski, it would still not equal the amount of time spent by Baldwin coaching against some of the best players in the world.
