Gold Coast Airport - Southern Terminal Expansion flythrough
First look inside the Gold Coast Airport's southern terminal expansion.

CONSTRUCTION work on the Gold Coast Airport terminal expansion is about to take off with the arrival of two big cranes on site.

Two nine-tonne tower cranes have been installed in the past two weeks as foundation works near completion on the $500 million redevelopment, which will double the existing terminal footprint.

New video has given the clearest view yet of the expanded terminal, which will feature aerobridges, retail space and a new departure lounge.

The precinct’s first hotel, a 192-room Rydges, is also under construction.

“These cranes send a signal to visitors, airline partners, residents and investors that Gold Coast Airport is on the move,” Queensland Airports CEO Chris Mills said. “These projects will transform the gateway to the Gold Coast and northern NSW.”

Mr Mills added the next phase was about delivery of the terminal and hotel projects.

“We are so excited to see all of our hard work and preparation in the past few years finally start to take shape with the development,” he said.

“These cranes are a tangible sign of the high level of activity going on in the precinct.”

About 1500 jobs will be created during construction of the southern terminal expansion alone – in addition to those generated at the hotel.

Lendlease Building Queensland general manager Brad Protheroe said project works continued to steadily grow.

“We currently have up to 160 workers on site at any given time and have inducted more than 600 people since start of construction,” he said.

“So far we have awarded work packages to 10 local subcontractors and suppliers – that’s approximately $31.6 million worth of work so far contributing to the Gold Coast economy.

“These numbers are only set to increase as we approach peak construction in mid to late 2020.”

AIR NIUGINI UPGAUGES CAIRNS-PORT MORESBY TO BOEING 767-300

Air Niugini has started operating Boeing 767 flights between Cairns and Port Moresby carrying fresh produce bound for Hong Kong.

While the airline has traditionally served Cairns with narrowbody aircraft, Air Niugini has upgauged the route and provided a one-stop connection to Hong Kong via its Port Moresby hub in partnership with the Queensland government, Cairns Regional Council and Cairns Airport.

The Papua New Guinea-based carrier plans to operate two 767-300 services a week from Cairns to Port Moresby and then onwards to Hong Kong.

The inaugural 767-300 flight PX 93 took off from Cairns a little after 1300 local time on Wednesday carrying 8.5 tonnes of cargo, including live fish, pumpkins and rockmelons and aquarium coral.

Cairns Airport marked the occasion by giving the aircraft P2-PXV an Airservices Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) monitor cross.

Does it use the same flight number all the way to Hong Kong?

22 airlines have been targeted by Cairns Airport. I would honestly like to see a wide-body aircraft take the Singapore route after the merger. A USA route would be awesome but I don't think it will happen.

They won't get 2 of 22. Bet's on! Although at least they are trying.

The wide body argument is why i come back to Cairns via Bali when in SE Asia than Singapore. 6 hours on a 737 no.
You remember how the Singapore - Cairns route was established because Silk Air got a Max? Now that it's grounded and they run a 800NG check the distance straight line vs range of the jet. I'd hate to have a strong headwind and a go around, might be landing short of Cairns :P Actually amazed it's allowed on a route just a few kilometres shy of its range.
