Hi guys, quick recap on the testing/production:

FTV1 has completed 21 flights, 43,5 hours in the air. It is now based in Wichita, Kansas, at the BFTC (Bombardier Flight Test Center) in order to have more favorable weather to perform test flights.
FTV2 flew 5 times, totaling 10,5 hours in the air.

All test flights until now were in FBW direct mode, normal mode should be implemented at Wichita with FTV1 first.

FTV3 is about to be handed over to the flight test team (end of January) and should be flying by mid February.
FTV4 and 5 are being completed in the FAL.
The first production CS100 (msn 50006) is also under assembly at Mirabel, while all the components for the first CS300 are being delivered to the FAL (complete fuselage is already there).

Cheers,
Paolo

Yes, it is a direct quote - but actually, compared to what?

As if the program hasn't been delayed enough.

New Bombardier Jet Suffers Major Engine Failure

* Extent of the Damage to the Engine and the Aircraft Was Not Immediately Clear

Updated May 30, 2014 3:10 p.m. ET

A Bombardier Inc. BBD.B.T -2.38% CSeries test aircraft suffered a major failure of one of its two engines during a ground test Thursday in a potential setback for the Canadian airplane maker's effort to compete with Boeing Co. BA +0.08% and Airbus Group, EADSY +0.45% according to several people familiar with the matter.

The single-aisle CSeries is powered by new engines developed by the Pratt & Whitney unit of United Technologies Corp. UTX -0.11% that use a geared system to let different parts of the engine spin at different speeds, offering better fuel consumption than traditional designs.

The incident occurred on the Canadian plane maker's lead flight test aircraft at Bombardier's assembly plant at Mirabel, Quebec. There were no injuries during the incident, said two people familiar with the event, and the extent of the damage to the engine and the aircraft wasn't immediately clear.

Some Twitter reports say it was an uncontained engine failure with debris being ejected out of the engine. Smoke was seen and there is damage to both the aircraft and the engine.

If this is true, then it may be a compressor or turbine disk failure. Such failures cannot be contained because of the high energy of the disks. Only a fan blade failure has to be contained in the nacelle.

It's better that it happens right now : a disk failure with the plane in service would have resulted in the grounding of all the fleet and the loss of millions for the airliners (and the manufacturer).

I suppose this is what the test flights are for, to red flag problems. That said, Bombardier really needs to steer the C-Series program more successfully. So much is riding on this and there have been far too many bad news stories over the last 2 years.

First African Operator and Existing Commercial Aircraft Customer Signs Letter of Intent for Five Bombardier CSeries Airliners

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/first- ... 6-71732620

2 hints:

The airline operates both CRJ and Q400 (Arik Air, SA Express and RwandAir)

The airline faces challenging operational environments and needs excellent range for hot-and-high performance as they expand into new and growing markets", (SA Express: Johannesburg : 1 600m or RwandAir: Kigali : 1 490m)

It seems that RwandAir has canceled its option for two more CRJ-900NGs (infos was removed from Bombardier website). I bet if the airline orders C Series, they will probably replace two B737-700 ex Air Berlin leased from ILFC. I think they will be an order for two or three aircraft, with others in option. It's quite a big order for the airline, we don't forget that they will be also an order for two B787s which will be delivered in 2017.

Turkish Aerospace Industries is one of the subcontractors of Bombardier C Series

Quote:
TAI Delivers First Bombardier C Series FTE

Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. (TAI), a subcontractor to Bombardier, delivered its First C Series Fixed Trailing Edge (FTE) to Bombardier at a ceremony held at TAI's facilities in Ankara, Turkey, on August 19, 2014.

TAI assembled FTE will be integrated to wing in Belfast facilities and delivered to the final assembly line in Montreal, Canada.

Many high level authorities among whom were the VP & General Manager of BA-Belfast Michael Ryan, Vice President of Supply Chain & Fabrications Stephen Cowan, TAI President and CEO Muharrem Dörtkaşlı, Senior Executive Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Governance Bekir Ata Yılmaz and Executive VP of Aero Structure Naki Polat participated in the ceremony.

TAI has a long, proven track record of building exceptional aerospace products and C Series is one of these products which makes difference by its properties like low fuel consumption, environmental energy usage. Delivery of this high quality product FTE has been another major milestone. Adding new capabilities and increasing outsourcing activities are other major benefits of this program.

Once the program reaches full rate production, TAI will support Bombardier wing assembly lines in Belfast by shipping ten FTE per month.

Bombardier announced a much needed firm order for 40 CS300s.

It's the tied largest firm order together with the Republic order (which is actually rumored to be cancelled soon).

Quote:
Bombardier and Macquarie AirFinance Sign Purchase Agreement for up to 50 CSeries Aircraft

* Firm purchase agreement for 40 aircraft and 10 options signed
* Order positions Macquarie AirFinance as largest lessor of CS300 aircraft

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that a wholly owned affiliate of Macquarie AirFinance has signed a firm purchase agreement for 40 CS300 jetliners and has taken options on an additional 10 CS300 aircraft.

Macquarie AirFinance, which currently owns or manages 136 jet aircraft leased to 73 operators in 43 countries across six continents, will lease the CS300 aircraft to airline operators around the world. Delivery of the aircraft will be on a phased basis from 2017 to 2019.

“Macquarie AirFinance’s selection of the CS300 aircraft is a strong endorsement of the aircraft type and we are looking forward to working with this unique lessor to expand the market for our 100%-new jetliner,” said Mike Arcamone, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We anticipate continued momentum in the CSeries aircraft program as we confirm our performance predictions for the aircraft.”
