hah, the third design reminds me a lot of this

http://oxfordplace.ca/images/slide-aerialSkyline.jpg

Those renders don't really give a detailed indication of the actual design (expected being just concepts) but 2nd and 3rd would be my pick

3 and 4 would be my picks. 2 looks like chimney stacks in the render posted but would like to see more angles.

Points to Mario Cucinella Architects for thinking outside the box. Very interesting concept.

I think Council will probably go with something a little more conventional.

FJMT - quality as always. Clean lines, symmetric features (minus the height), nothing overly complicated. Only concept with an airbridge? Prefer this design to their ICC Hotel at Darling Harbour.

JPW - a tad complicated with breakout boxes, awnings and the balcony (?) halfway up. Feels like a chest of half opened draws that I want to push back in.

Bates Smart - interesting! Is it white glazed glass? Podiums are playful. Would like to see more renders

Mario Cucinella. It's the most interesting and innovative.

We may get more info about final designs after Dec 6.
What we have seen will be fine tuned and changes will be made before the final designs are entered.

Each of the four chosen teams will now compete in a design excellence competition closing on 6th December.

Each will receive $30,000 on submission of a complying scheme, with Council announcing the winning design before the end of the year.

Bates Smart for me, it has an air of WTC about it.

I'm going to lean towards Johnson PIlton walker for the time being. While I approve of the shape of the Bates Smart Design, I feel it will take attention away from Aspire iself which is meant to be the defining building. I'm not really sold on the architectural feature at the top either.

That thought did occur to me as well. What, no SOM?, no Foster? no Maki? and so on. Would like to see the other entrants as this decision appears to have occurred very fast to me.
On the other hand, the 4 selected are no slackers in terms of design.

JPW is a yawnfest, so that will probably win.

Cucinella is a great idea and if there is someone with balls on the panel, then this will win.

Otherwise my pick is FJMT

Still undecided but leaning toward the FJMT...

The Cucinella (coo-chee-nell-a) reminds me of the tall, conical, woven, traditional head-dresses that a particular African tribe wears as part of a ceremony/ritual.
