Looks like it is only the Jumeirah Beach Club with the cinema - which is already under construction.

But looks like the Sheraton Hotel is losing the beach access?? On that picture you can see the cable car station sitting on that place.

Are you sure about that? I thought that the beach club would be further north, closer to the center of JBR, than this image shows.

Not sure about it. So I made an overlay with the picture from gevorika for Google Earth:
Just open the file with Google Earth desktop App

Switch with timeline to 8/12/2012 imagery.

They want to increase the beach very much. So you can see that the Sheraton Hotel has no beach anymore. The cable car station is sitting on the the current car park. The right part is the Jumeirah Beach Village (Sorry, i mentioned it as Jumeirah Beach Club before....)

Very cool indeed. Thank you for doing that. Yes, I figured you meant beach village but also had them conflated.

Fascinating project. Is there any new information on which Metro station the monorail will connect to?

I wonder when the extension work on the Jbr beach will happen? Sheraton could do with the extension ASAP!

Wow, they've finally started this project! I thought that it is only proposed project. Congratulations Dubai, after some years you will have one more world attraction!

I do find this project interesting and look forward to the construction process, however I can't deny that I'm a bit worried about the final outcome of the ferris wheel.
As one member previously stated here as well, I fear the wheel will look quite ridicolous on the beachfront. The beachfront is looking fine now, and the view to the unobstructed sea (beside the Palm Island and the SkyDive Dubai runway at the far right of the beach) gives the beach an "authentic" feeling (sorry, I don't know how to describe it in another way), this will be destroyed by the funfair-like feeling the wheel will produce.
I hope the island will look fine in the end and that the ferris wheel will enhance the beachfront view, but I do have my doubts.

The amount of beach space will be increased as part of the project. The Jumeirah village project will also hopefully improve the beach experience.

I have never been impressed with the beach since the beginning. There are no toilet facilities, no showers or changing facilities outwith the hotels, no rubbish bins and no one enforcing beach rules. People drive their cars on the beach at weekends, have barbecues and leave a mess behind them. Hopefully this redevelopment will sort it out and bring a world class beach to rival South beach Miami.

View from The Jewels, Dubai Marina.

Bottom left corner there is more activity with an excavator. Possibly extending the groyne on the marina entrance.

Work begins on $1.6bn Bluewaters island in Dubai

May 21, 2013

Meraas began construction of its Bluewaters island project on Monday, according to the Dubai Chronicle. The man-made project is located 500m off the coast at the opposite end of Dubai Marina from the Palm Jumeirah.

Of the total $1.6bn cost of the project, an estimated $270m will go into the creation of the main attraction - a 210m-tall ferris wheel dubbed the Dubai Eye, inspired by the 135m-tall London Eye in the UK. It will best the latter to become the world's tallest ferris wheel.

While Van Oord, the Dutch firm known for its worked on Palm Jumeirah, is conducting the dredging work for Bluewaters, the design and construction of the Dubai Eye will be entrusted to Hyundai Contracting and Starneth Engineering – the two companies that were also responsible for building the London Eye.

Once complete, the development will have a direct link to Sheikh Zayed Road, a monorail connecting to the Dubai Metro, a pedestrian bridge and a cable car to Jumeirah Beach Residence.

The project is estimated to take five years to build, with completion due in Q1 2018.

Dredging

The dredging works by van Oord, as seen from the beach. A small piece of land is there already!
