Work on 'The World' on schedule, says Nakheel

Nakheel, developers of Dubai's luxury offshore project 'The World', has announced an update of its notable progress - less than a year after construction first began on the 300 islands.

While the island representing the UAE was the first to break the surface of the Arabian Gulf in March, earlier this year, several other land masses in the project have since been reclaimed or currently are in various stages of completion.

'With several land masses in the geographic area comprising Eurasia and North America having already emerged above water, the entire development has clearly begun to take shape', stated Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Nakheel. 'In addition to two completed islands, work is rapidly progressing on all the continents. Construction of the main protective breakwater is well underway too,' he added.

Each of the islands in The World is being reclaimed from a depth of up to a minus sixteen (-16) metres below the water's surface, and will be further developed to a height of plus three (+3) metres above water, as dredging work continues.

'The World is a very original and very ambitious project with very challenging deadlines, to say the least. I am pleased to report that not only is Nakheel well on course to meet these deadlines, but also, that in many instances, we are ahead of them. Every week sees the achievement of new milestones in the development of this unique project,' Sulayem stated.

The design of The World incorporates a cluster of 300 man-made islands strategically positioned to form the shape of the world map, with a protective breakwater on its perimeters.

While the leeward breakwater is designed as a submerged reef, the main or 'shamal' breakwater will be raised above water, with both offering protection from long and cross shore waves. Shelter provided by these breakwaters is will also attract and retain a wealth of marine life.

Positioned as one of the most exclusive property developments in Dubai and around the globe, The World is available for either private or commercial use. Commenting on the ongoing sales, Sulayem said, 'The World offers a distinctly unique proposition to potential buyers. Apart from the obvious attractions of year-round sunshine, island living, stunning scenery, tax-free lifestyle, and security, what The World offers is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an island.'

Nakheel has forecast radically different developments taking place on the islands of The World - ranging from luxurious private villas, to exotic theme parks and super deluxe five star hotels. 'The ideas we have been presented encompass everything from private estates to public facilities,' said Sulayem.

The reclamation development of The World is estimated at US$ 2 billion, and is located four kilometres offshore from Dubai, at a point halfway between The Palm - Jumeirah and Port Rashid.

i was not so sure about if they will build hotels on it, but it would have been a huge diappointment if there were only private villas!!!
so it definitely is the same vision as palm islands!

I wonder how you'll be able to go to the World like will ferries take ppl there or will there be some sort of tunnel connecting a main port and people just go to whatever island from there?

i think they will have a boat service or people who can afford to live their maybe have a yacht or a small boat with which they can go from island to island or for shopping. but if people living there want to go to dubai city, there must be a small harbor for the world somewhere (i don't think they'll use port rashid )

anybody got info on such a small harbor?

^yeah I guess the transport medium of choice for people who can afford owning one of those islands will be private jets, which I'm sure will have their own airport somewhere on The World. As for having hotels, retail centers and theme parks, it makes more sense cuz before it sounded like a very dull project with only these private villas and costing $2 billion.

Just go to http://www.theworld.ae/theworld/theworld.html and choose "master plan" in the upper left link corner.

You can also download from there .pdf files for every islands but they don't contain anything else than a little more detailed view of the selected island.

Great website. But it's really funny seeing the British islands with medieval castles on them and "wildflowers". The weather doesn't suit it at all.

I tried looking for the sales video. Don't know where it is.. can you give a direct link Dubai-Lover, and also put the link on the Videos thread?
