I don't think BMRC will wait for GoI approval. If the approval doesn't come when they finish soil testing, they may start calling tenders. In fact, they can start calling tenders for those sections where soil tests have been completed to save time.

MD said they will wait for GoI approval before issuing tenders. Approval is expected soon. Necessary to pursue loan.

BMRCL to procure 5 lakh additional Metro tokens

Quote:
With Namma Metro’s ridership is expected to increase in coming months, BMRCL has recently invited a tender to procure 5 lakh additional Metro tokens.

The daily ridership is expected to increase from 4.5 lakh to over 5 lakh after all 50 trains get six coaches by March 2020. At present, 20 trains on the Purple Line and eight on the Green Line have six coaches.

Further, two Metro corridors - Kanakapura Road (Yelachenahalli to Anjanapura), Mysuru Road (Mysuru Road to Kengeri) - will be operational by end of 2020. This will further increase the Metro’s ridership.
There have been instances of passengers allegedly not returning tokens. TOI had carried a report titled '2.3 lakh tokens lost or stolen since Metro rollout in October 2011' on July 19, 2019.

At present, Metro is operational between 24.2km long Green Line (Nagasandra to Yelachenahalli) and 18.1 Km Purple Line (Byappanahalli to Mysuru Road) and comprising of 40 stations.

“The Automatic fare collection (AFC) system of BMRCL is designed to work with chip-based smart token. BMRCL proposes to procure additional quantity of similar type of smart tokens that are same or equivalent and easily interfaced to its network” said a BMRCL tender document. BMRCL has implemented AFC system using recyclable contact-less smart token as single journey ticket and contact-less smart card for multiple journeys.

True use of paper is not eco friendly and also is a recurring expenditure.
The other alternative would have been compulsory cards as in the transport systems in the UAE where the concept of individual tickets or tokens doesn't exist at all. Cards should be sold cheap say no more than INR 10 with any amount recharge, even for just one trip.

Foot overbridge to connect Cantonment railway and metro stations

Quote:
Under fire for relocating the proposed Cantonment station from opposite the railway station to a nearby playground in Bamboo Bazaar, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to build a foot overbridge connecting the Metro and railway stations.

Infrastructure firm L&T has already taken up construction of an underground station at Madina Masjid ground in Bamboo Bazaar. Sources said BMRCL managing director Ajay Seth visited the location with senior officials to take steps for multi-modal integration at Cantonment. Earlier, it was decided to build a subway to connect both the Metro and railway stations.

"Subway is not feasible due to the presence of rocks and the distance. It is also difficult to maintain. We, therefore, decided to take up FOB connecting both Metro and railway stations," said a senior BMRCL official.

"Widening roads around the proposed Metro station, extending entries to Millers Road and to New Bamboo Bazaar Road, constructing an FOB up to the main (southern) entry of Cantonment railway station and possibly even to the northern entry of the railway station are part of the current plan," another BMRCL official said.

On the decision of relocating the Metro station, he said: "That decision has already been made due to technical reasons; the contract has been awarded and work has started."

Rajkumar Dugar, convener of Citizens for Citizens, an NGO said: "Bengaluru lost a good opportunity for a better multi modal integration at Cantonment. Nevertheless, it is heartening that BMRCL is now taking steps to integrate with proposed Metro station and Cantonment railway stations. Better connectivity will help citizens switch between Metro and railway stations without any hassle. BMRCL should also facilitate travellators in this FOB to connect both Metro and railway stations mainly to help elderly passengers."

Bridge to link Bamboo Bazaar, Cantt stn

Quote:
Offering a major relief to passengers expected to interchange from Metro to rail travel at the Cantonment railway station, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd has decided to provide a foot over bridge from the upcoming Bamboo Bazaar Metro station to the entrance of the railway station. The foot over bridge (FOB) will continue till the railway underpass and have escalators at both ends. The station falls under the Nagawara-Gottigere line (Reach-6) of Phase II.

The decision was conveyed by BMRCL Managing Director Ajay Seth to Rajkumar Dugar, convenor of Citizens for Citizens (C4C), who was at the forefront of a campaign to retain the original plan to have a Metro station at Cantonment.BMRCL’s move to shift the Metro station from Cantonment to a playground at Bamboo Bazaar to save Rs 1,000 crore had drawn much flak and generated frequent protests, both online and offline, from citizen’s groups. Passengers who want to interchange between the two modes would have to walk nearly 750 metre to do so.

Seth said, “BMRCL will construct the FOB of about 700 metre length up to Cantonment Station (from Bamboo Bazaar Metro station) and further 500 metre extension beyond that up to the junction in front of the railway underpass.” The underpass is toward the Vasanth Nagar direction.

Dugar said, “We had been campaigning since 2017 for the original plan of a Metro station at Cantonment to be retained. I am relieved that passengers will now have this facility that will easily connect the Bamboo Bazaar Metro station with Cantonment station. BMRCL has also promised to explore the possibility of installing a travelator along the FOB.”

BMRCL had proposed a tunnel earlier. “The tunnel from Bamboo Bazaar runs only up to 250 metre and will terminate at the railway compound. The FOB will lead to the entrance and will be much more convenient for the public,” Dugar said. Widening of road around the Metro station, extending Metro entry to Millers Road and establishing an auto stand on New Bamboo Bazaar Road were also planned, Dugar added.

Did BBMP flyover at Ejipura kill Koramangala’s Metro dreams?

Quote:
Koramangala, the hub of major startups, IT and BT companies, surprisingly lacks Metro connectivity. The 2.4km-long Ejipura-Kendriya Sadan flyover appears to have ruined the tony locality’s chances of getting the public transit facility for some time to come.

Work on BBMP’s flyover that connects Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala 2nd Block to Ejipura Junction started in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2020. Koramangala will not be directly connected in Metro Phase 2 and doesn’t figure in the Phase 3 plan being finalised.

Officials said BBMP, along with a local politician, unilaterally decided to build the flyover without public consultation and coordinating with other agencies. In fact, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) sources confirmed they were never consulted before the construction was taken up.

Experts said a road-cumrail flyover would have been a more feasible option. The Ejipura flyover is another instance of how the absence of a Unified Metropolitan Transportation Authority (UMTA) is affecting Bengaluru.

“The nearest Metro station for Koramangala residents will be Mico Industries (Lakkasandra) on the Pink Line (Gottigere-Nagawara) or Silk Board interchange (RV Road-Bommasandra and Silk Board-KR Puram-Kempegowda International Airport). It is not technically feasible to convert the already constructed flyover pillars for Metro. The cost would have been less if it had been planned as a roadcum-rail flyover,” said a senior BMRCL official.

BMRCL is now building a road-cum-rail flyover between Ragigudda and Central Silk Board (3.35km). The flyover, where the lower deck will be used by vehicles and top deck by Metro, is part of the elevated RV Road-Bommasandra corridor (18.8km) of Phase 2.

Urban mobility expert Vivek Kalkur said BBMP has already killed the possibility of a Metro along Koramangala 100 Feet Road and Inner Ring Road stretches by hurriedly opting for a single-level elevated road between Ejipura and Madiwala. “A 20km Metro line from Hebbal to Iblur via Ballari Road and Sarjapur Road would have provided direct Metro access from the airport to the city centre and areas like Koramangala,” he said.

BBMP commissioner BH Anilkumar was unavailable for comments.

Sandeep Anirudhan, founder, Citizens Agenda for Bengaluru, said, “The flyover prevents the Metro network from having a high-density alternative from Byappanahalli to Silk Board, which would decongest this corridor and provide an incentive for residents to give up their vehicles for public transit.”

An online petition, ‘Replace Ejipura elevated corridor/flyover with Metro, decongest Koramangala & Indiranagar’, has garnered over 160 signatures so far.

Srinidhi Sampath, a road expert said, “Though Metro connectivity wasn’t planned for Koramangala, building a flyover will only encourage private vehicles in that area. BMRCL should have explored Metro connectivity.”

Some Koramangala residents, however, are not missing the Metro. Nitin Seshadri, a civic activist said, “Metro connectivity to Koramangala was not planned under BMRCL’s Phase 2 and Phase 3. It is not feasible to have Metro here since it is not being connected to other lines. Only some WhatsApp warriors are making a hue and cry. There should be shuttle services between Koramangala and the nearest Metro stations.”

If we consider Carmelaram-Hebbal line, Sarjapur Road (St John's junction) will serve the purpose for Koramangala.
So inner ring road flyover is fine unless the government is considering to construct the inner ring road metro line.

The inner ring road line would have been very useful.

We need both lines. Inner Ring Road line as well as Hebbal-Carmelaram line. Inner Ring Road line can provide connectivity to EGL and Bagmane tech parks.

BMRCL should consider building a new line in the third phase itself that connects Silk Board- Madiwala- Sony Signal - Ejipura- IRR- EGL - Indira Nagar 13th Main Road - Suranjan Das Road- Bagmane tech Park - Bypanhalli-Kalyan Nagar like in the following pic. It will be a 17-18 KM line and will connect the ORR line at both the ends besides connecting to Hebbal-Carmelaram Line at Kendriya Sadan, Marathahalli-Hosakerehallli Line at Domlur and purple line at Byappanhalli.

Carmalaram-Hebbal line is 100 times more important.
This line is unnecessary I feel
