Hi Nathan,

they are keeping ten double decker trams and they have had new widened doors fitted so they conform to the new platforms and a number of older trams (about four or five from memory) along with the illumination trams.

The new system goes live in April/May and then the plan is to get it extended from Blackpool North Pier (the points have been installed) up to Blackpool North Railway station. My gut feeling on this will be for it to take about ten years for it to happen and it needs Blackpool to push for it in the same way Manchester did their extensions and not take no as an answer.

The new Sainsbury's looks damned impressive. There has been a bit of noise about it internally recently. Looks like they are pushing it as one of the flagship stores in the region. Its about time Blackpool had a proper Sainsbury's. The one at Red Bank Road doesn't quite do it!

New Year, New Look for The Blackpool Tower

WORK HAS BEGUN ON THE FRONT OF THE BLACKPOOL TOWER

Plans for a dazzling new frontage have been unveiled for Blackpool’s iconic Tower. Stained glass and terracotta tiling will be restored and a glass-fronted canopy put in place at the Promenade entrance to the landmark. All which reveal the original building which has been hidden for years.

The work is expected to be completed over the next 12 months and windows have already been replaced in the upper floors of the building.

Iain Hawkins, Merlin Entertainments’ Head of the Blackpool Cluster, said: “We hope to start work as soon as possible. The stained glass and terracotta tiles all need to be individually made so there is a terrific amount of work to do.”

The Blackpool Tower sensationally reopened on September 1st 2011 after a yearlong project of restoration and the introduction of new attractions. Merlin works alongside Blackpool Council, as part of its ambitious £250m regeneration programme for the town, bringing it into public ownership for the first time in its history.

Since then Blackpool Council has been working in partnership with global visitor attractions operator, Merlin Entertainments, to restore and transform the iconic Tower and buildings into a must-see family tourist experience reminiscent of its glory days. It still retains the grandeur and heritage of the building itself - the famous Blackpool Tower Ballroom and The Blackpool Tower Circus - and adds two of Merlin’s most contemporary global attractions. The Blackpool Tower Eye with 4D cinema experience and The Blackpool Tower Dungeon.

2012 will see the continued work, painting the legs of The Tower along with the careful restoration of uncovered windows and architecture.

Iain Said: “After taking off the old canopy, whatever we put on the front we wanted to make sure people would see the amazing heritage behind which is why we have gone for a more contemporary feel for the new canopy using glass.

“It will make the front of the Tower look fantastic and will complement the work done by the council in creating the Comedy Carpet and the new headland.”

They've started ripping everything out of Revills Hotel on Banks street today, and it looks like they're moving all the Portakabins away from the prom near the Metropole too, been quite busy around here today, cant wait for Revills to finally go

I was wrong, it looks like they're doing something passed the Metropole on the prom now, barricades have gone up beside the tram tracks

It really is great (and highly encouraging) to see all this investment going into Blackpool..I just hope we start to see more substantial stuff (and this isn't knocking what has already been done!) once all these 'tweaks' and touch ups are completed.

THIS is the bold vision for Blackpool Football Club’s new hotel.

Situated in the new South Stand corner of the ground, the Blackpool Football Club Hotel is being targeted at conference visitors, as well as holidaymakers.

Work is well under way on the 70-bedroom hotel, which includes luxury suites, family bedrooms, and standard accommodation.

The club hopes to use its existing conference facilities to attract business travellers.

BFC business development manager John Woodman said: “We’ve had a bit of stick about the hotel not being open yet, but it has been delayed by work on the corner stand being held up.

“A view of Bloomfield Road’s hallowed turf accompanies many of the rooms and while the hotel is within touching distance of the town’s many amenities, a built-in sports bar and restaurant will ensure that you can relax without setting foot outside.

“And we want people to use the existing conference facilities at the club along with the hotel which we think will boost trade.”

The hotel is now earmarked for an early summer opening after building work was delayed on the South Stand corner.

Recruitment for the hotel is well under way with hotel boss Sam Oyston pledging to employ as many people from the surrounding area as possible.

He has been working with Blackpool and The Fylde College and Job Centre Plus to ensure its 10 reception and 14 housekeeping jobs go to the local area.

They devised a training programme for the club to ensure it got the best candidates lined up for the positions when it opens.

Mr Oyston said: “We wanted to help with these issues and give those without a job in the area the first chance to get one, rather than taking people on who might have a job elsewhere already.”

The plans include bars, a gym and a top-end restaurant for guests at the hotel.

They're throwing out all the stuff at the moment (there's even a bunch of chairs outside it ), once they have done that, I think they will get started on pulling it down. Sleepwell hotels said they waited until winter to start the demolition to cause less disruption.

Once it's knocked down, I wonder how long it will actually take for them to build the new apartments they plane? I bet those living on Filey Place will be happy they can actually see the sun from their front windows.

Looks like the planning permission for the old Pontins site discussed a couple of pages back have been overturned after Fylde Council (The site is actually in St. Annes not Blackpool) hadn't followed correct planning procedures.

New plans will be submitted.

They're demolishing the chimnley today on the old Revills Hotel, so it can't be too long until they start moving onto the rest of the building

Excellent news, can't wait to see the back of it, it's such a shame it's got to this stage but a bit like that area on coronation street (next to the Houndshill Centre) that was demolished in 2010 it will look alot better without it.

The Winter Gardens looks so much more impressive at the back, thanks to that demolition. It's made the whole area look instantly much more impressive. They will have to tidy up the little street behind Revills when they knock it down though.
