Bhai mulk k halaat dekhen, ek bridge tk toh bn nahi rha from gilgit to gwadar nothing. Only cpec related important projects are going which started in last govt tenure. Development is not the policy of this govt neither health or education. All focus is on NAB, nawaz, zardari, forest, and making songs on kashmir. That's it. IMF wont allow such waste of money on ring road. Wait till IMF program is completed

Work on Ring Road project begins today

RAWALPINDI: Finally, the ring road project is going to become a reality as the Punjab government on Friday hired a private firm as consultant to conduct feasibility study and submit PC-1 of the project in six months.

Commissioner retired Capt Saqib Zafar told Dawn that a joint consortium of Zeeruk (Pvt) Limited and Engineering General Consultant (Pvt) Limited would start work from today (Saturday).

The consortium has been selected from six private firms who had submitted their expressions of interest (EoIs).

Govt hires consultant for carrying out feasibility study in six months

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) had invited EoIs in May and as many as 26 private companies had submitted their EoIs. The RDA shortlisted six companies--M/s Usmani and Company, M/s Nespak, M/s Associated Consultancy Centre, M/s MPP Pakistan Private Limited, M/s Zeeruk Pvt Limited and M/s Engineering General Consultant (EGC) Pvt limited -- and asked them to submit their financial proposals.

The commissioner said the Punjab government had allocated Rs10 million for the feasibility study.

The commissioner said the provincial government had completed negotiations with Chinese Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for loan for the project.

He said the ring road would ultimately ease traffic congestion on city roads and increase trade activities in the Potohar region.

He said the government would procure land and the infrastructure would be constructed from the loan. He said that the government had already allocated Rs4 billion for the land acquisition.

“The consultant will give the real picture of the benefits of the road project for the people,” he said.

He said the consultant would make PC-I and suggest how to end the disadvantages of the project. He said basically the project would end the traffic congestion in the city areas.

The commissioner said besides the Ring Road Project, Leh Expressway Project was also on the agenda of the Punjab government.

He said consultant for Leh Expressway would be hired within next few days.

The commissioner said the 48.5-km-long ring road would start from Chani Sher Alam near Rawat and end at Thalian near Motorway. Basically, goods transport will use the road, bypassing thickly populated areas of the city and the cantonment.

Mr Zafar said this would be an opportunity for the administration to shift the grain market, bus terminals, business centres and establish educational city and medical city along the new artery.

He said that it was an opportunity to make planning for the city as earlier development used to be made by default but now it would be done by design. He said new sites for markets, bus terminals and education and health outlets would be developed which would expand the city.

The estimated cost of the project was Rs42 billion.

The project was initiated 30 years ago in the first tenure of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif but the work could not be started due to political reasons.

However, the PTI-led government started the work soon after coming into power in the province.

>nothing will happen

Something happens

>government won't get loan. IMF won't allow it

Loan negotiations completed

>loans will have problems. Punjab government is cash-strapped

Punjab had a budget deficit for the entirety of the last term as well.

______

How about you actually let the people breathe and wait for the actual news instead of constantly blabbering pessimistic petty comments because you don’t like the ruling party.

When the ring road is actually in front of your eyes, you'll say "pfft, Nawaz Sharif came up with it 30 years ago!"

This seems like an accurate assessment. The present government might not be corrupt (of course we can't even say that with certainty), but so far they haven't really demonstrated any competence in terms of project management and delivery.

In my opinion this road is more important than some of the metros and highways which are made in last five years. Unfortunately PTI govt. is facing deficits and has to control spending. Let's hope people start paying taxes so that everyone benefits and country goes in right direction and spend money where it's needed.

PTI's economic policies are the exact opposite. Shaukat Aziz and Ishaq Dar was nearly identical policies.

Unfortunately PTI government has no economic policy and they have no idea what they are doing. I wish Pakistan really good but with 2.4 % growth rate and 20 % percent interest rates Pakistan economy is shrinking in dollar terms.

Anyone who isn't a complete idiot knows what the economic policy is. To shrink our current account deficit, which is the biggest cause of our mess, from $20 billion to a number we can afford. Right now we are needing one cpec every year at the rate our CAD is at. This is all a PMLN problem, and the exact same problem was created by Shaukat Aziz once before as well. As both governments focused on dollar and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE, macroeconomics wise.

You see, "keeping the dollar at 105" is what's not an economic policy, it's idiocracy. Having a 0% growth in exports in 5 years COMBINED is what's a shitty economic policy. $20 billion CAD despite having only $10-$17 billion in foreign reserves is something's only Nawaz Sharif can do. If you can come up with a single justification for these atrocious numbers, I'll agree with your PTI criticism.

I voted for PTI, and feel extremely disappointed. The goverence of PTI could be judged that they are not able to fully complete Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro despite being 90% complete for over a year.

It can't judged that way because completing it still requires money, even new buses need to be bought. To make it operational another subsidy will have to be given every month, which usually ranges around couple of crores per day.

So there are many factors that make it nonviable for now. Thus, saying that this project has faced an unannounced axe, doesn't make it bad governance.
