The route for the US 301 expressway in Delaware, connecting the semi-limited-access US 301 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to DE 1, can now be seen from Google satellite imagery. Some future interchanges are clearly visible, and I think I can tell where the toll booths will be also.

Our alternative to I-95 is getting closer and closer to opening.

US 301 on pace to collect tolls in December, fund first loan payment

Nearly two years after it began, construction on the $636 million U.S. 301 tollway is on pace to be completed in December – on time for the state to make its first payment on a $211 million federal loan, the Delaware Department of Transportation said this week.

“Opening the new U.S. 301 by the end of 2018 is critical as toll revenues will pay the loans that have helped finance this project,” DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan said in a statement.

DelDOT in late 2015 finalized for the project a Federal Highway Administration loan, designed to supplement investment from private credit markets.

The expected opening of the 14-mile expressway will cap decades of state efforts to draw up plans for and then build a new artery through once-rural southern New Castle County.

Proponents say the highway will reduce traffic on the streets in and around Middletown, grow the economy in the area and provide an alternate route for drivers traveling between Wilmington and Washington.

PennDOT is FINALLY building a bypass around Shamokin Dam and Lewisburg in central Pennsylvania, between Harrisburg and Williamsport. The bypass will go noth around Hummels Wharf and Shamokin Dam to the west, utilizing a half-abandoned cloverleaf interchange, and then cross over US 15 between Shamokin Dam, and crossing the Susquehanna River to bypass Lewisburg to the east across the river.

MAP

Work has already begun on the northern half of the project (in red on the above map). Here's a picture of the interchange that is the left-most part of that red section:

US Route 15 in Pennsylvania between the New York border and Williamsport has its exited numbered and has mile markers along it. It looks like it's closer to being signed as I-99. Any timetable on when that will become official?

The US 301 expressway around Middletown opened today. It looks like the expressway will be called the Mainline, to avoid confusion with the surface road also signed as US 301.

U.S. 301 Mainline toll road opens Thursday to cheers and jeers

...

The 14-mile drive that begins at Del. 1 near the Roth Bridge and runs along the outskirts of Middletown before reaching the Delaware/Maryland border was created through a decades-long contentious process and it opened to mixed reviews.

For some, the opening signals the end to the construction around Middletown that has been an eyesore and has lead to delays and detours, as well as upsetting residents because of the dust kicked up by grading.

The Mainline transformed the entrance to Middletown from the north, replacing a typical — if often clogged — two-lane country road that featured views of pastures and new housing developments with wider roads and better intersections studded with views of highway bridges and roadways.

For many in the area, the Mainline is welcome because it will, in theory, ease overall congestion on area highways, including the current U.S. 301 and Del. 896.

Proponents have argued the highway is necessary to divert increasing numbers of tractor trailers passing through southern New Castle County off local roads.

The Little Heaven/Bowers Beach interchange on Delaware Route 1 is now in use. Delaware Route 1 is now stop-free from I-95 to the intersection with Delaware Route 16, south of Milton.
