Development should be an ongoing thing, not something drafted just because they need votes

Ya, true. Isn't it some form of bribery? Just my thought.

French hypermarket chain wants to expand in Kuching

By CHOONG MEK ZHIN
[email protected]

KUCHING: After operating in the peninsula for 17 years, French hypermarket chain Carrefour aims to expand here as the city is showing signs of readiness due to its modernisation.

“Malaysia is a growing market with potential and we want to reinforce the message that we are here and will continue to be here,” said Carrefour Malaysia and Singapore chief executive officer Stephane Deutsch, adding that the chain had begun looking for potential sites.

Deutsch, who took up the post last month, said Carrefour would build its talent pool to 150 executive and 1,000 non-executive staff in its expansion plan.

He said the company did not have quantity targets but qualitative ones when it came to the opening of new stores.

He was met during a media trip to Bau where Carrefour has undertaken a sundry shop transformation project under the Economic Transformation Programme to modernise local retail outlets.

Deutsch said the project had helped the retailers to learn about the market’s needs, such as for animal feed as many in small towns reared chicken.

He said that Carrefour’s strength was in adapting to the market in its catchment areas and to the customers it served.

“We have a good market position and strong and interesting competitors. Our asset is our innovations team that comes up with surprises and constantly engages customers,” Deutsch said, adding that customer communications was important in the industry.

He said that changes always happened in Carrefour stores, ranging from hypermarkets to express-type stores, to surprise customers.

“We make shopping not merely a chore but a discovery of exciting products that inspire people to try something new,” he said, adding that the store’s broad range of products helped.

Deutsch was impressed by the diversity of Malaysians and their willingness to try new things.

Carrefour’s appeal was in its modernity, hygiene, security and ability to offer the best prices, he added.

“The way to do this is to change our base practices and review the market, watching how it grows. Organisation also plays a big part,” he said, adding that changes could occur in specific areas in a store.

Deutsch said that Malaysia had not been affected by the global economic downturn and sales had not dropped much.

“The only change perhaps is in customer habits. Rather than buying everything at one go, they now shop more often but for less items each time to lessen the financial strain,” he said.

Deutsch was previously the Carrefour China vice-president and southern territory general manager spearheading its operations in four Chinese provinces and steering 29 stores.

This French national was educated in finance and has 21 years of experience in the retail industry, 11 of which was in Asia.
