La Bombonera's Fate Seems Sealed

Club Atlético Boca Juniors is set to buy three hectares of land to the north of their current stadium, near Casa Amarilla, and develop a brand-new stadium from scratch. The club will pay $12 million for the land over the next several years.

This would effectively mean the end of the Alberto J. Armando Stadium, otherwise known as La Bombonera.

The current stadium simply cannot be expanded anymore because its existing structures hang above the surrounding streets, and there is no option of buying the land directly beside the stadium just for any expansion. Plus, if La Bombonera were converted into an all-seater entirely, its capacity would only be 34,000, and there are over 73,000 socios waiting for their season tickets. Boca Juniors have no other option but to develop a brand-new stadium for up to 75,000 people.

I know some people would be upset about this, but Boca deserve a modern stadium.

Indeed they do. Even though they are now playing in an iconic stadium, it is sadly enough extremely outdated.

There is just one problem with the site of a new Boca Juniors stadium: There are a couple of 10-storey apartment towers that were built at the north of the site in 2013-14. Even though they are only a couple of years old, the development of any new Boca Juniors stadium will necessitate the demolition of the apartment towers, unfortunately.

A community meeting on whether to build a new stadium for legendary Argentine football club Boca Juniors descended into a brawl, leaving two people wounded, officials said Thursday.

The wounded men, one of whom was stabbed in the neck, are members of a group called Boca is the People that is fighting efforts by the club's politically connected president to build a new stadium.

The group said its members were attacked at the neighborhood forum Wednesday evening as they voiced their opposition to plans to replace the current stadium, a beloved but aging venue known as the Bombonera, or chocolate box.

It pointed the finger at President Mauricio Macri's party, Republican Proposal (PRO).

Boca's director, Daniel Angelici, is a close ally of the conservative president, who preceded him as head of the club.

"A mob answering to a PRO precinct boss... started physically and verbally attacking us," Boca is the People said in a statement.

One of those wounded was Fernando Abal Medina, the brother of a senator and one-time chief of staff to former president Cristina Kirchner, the leftist leader Macri replaced in December.

Abal Medina "is out of danger, but he has to remain under observation because he took a whole lot of punches," said his brother, Juan Manuel Abal Medina.

The other victim, a 25-year-old man who was stabbed with a knife, is also out of danger despite losing a lot of blood, he said.

Boca, one of Argentina's most popular and successful clubs, issued a statement denying involvement.

PRO leader and Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta said for his part that his party does not have any "mobs."

Boca, a hardscrabble port neighborhood, is known for its brightly colored houses and sultry tango dancers. It has been up in arms over plans to replace the Bombonera, which opened in 1940.

The proposed $400-million stadium would have a capacity of 75,000 -- 20,000 more than the Bombonera -- but fewer cheap seats for the club's rowdy, working-class fan base.

Processes like these call upon some strong emotions. But never should people be assaulted for having a different opinion. That said I think Boca Juniors needs and deserves a new stadium.

Nobody wants that.
The hinchas of Boca refuse to leave this iconic stadium.

And they're right; a football temple like La Bombonera must stand as long as football exist.

Saludos hermanos!

New Boca Stadium in danger

The President of Boca Juniors, Daniel Angelici, plans to build a new stadium in the immediate vicinity of La Bombonera. As the purchase of the property now failed, the project seems to be in danger.

The Boca Juniors wanted to purchase a plot next to La Bombonera to build a new stadium there for around 80,000 spectators. A complaint from residents, who wanted to prevent the sale of the property, was now successful according to Argentine media reports. Thus, a possible new building is in danger. The old stadium is not to be demolished, but will continue to be used for events.

If they can really buy up the property behind the current stadium and redevelop that, it would probably be the best possible solution.

The neighbours of La Bombonera are not likely to sell their properties, so, any expansion seems extremely hard

The Boca Juniors have decided to reject their plans for a new stadium and instead to expand the La Bombonera.

Actually wanted Daniel Angelici, president of the Argentine tradition Boca Juniors, a new 80,000-seat stadium forming near the La Bombonera build (Stadium World) reported. The plans were now rejected for reasons of cost.

Instead the club from Buenos Aires plans an expansion of La Bombonera from 50,000 to about 77,000 seats. Two neighboring properties would have to be purchased.

I have to say, I am fairly disappointed that the new Bombonera scheme was dropped, because I didn't know such a move would be that unpopular. If fans of Boca Juniors love their obsolete-looking stadium so much, then the issues affecting the stadium right now (inadequate crowd circulation, etc.) will never go away.

An article on StadiumDB.com presents the three most viable expansion proposals for the Albert J. Armando Stadium from the last couple of years:

* One involving the addition of two really steep tiers of seating at its east
* One involving the addition of a fourth (!) tier of seating
* One involving the construction of a completely new east stand that matches the other three stands (known as "Bombonera 360")

I thought the first two options were really crazy. If Boca Juniors do not want a new stadium, then I think the best option for them is the "Bombonera 360" concept. I'd be perfectly fine with adding that new east stand, even if it means acquiring all those properties to the east of the stadium (Really? That many private owners?).

The StadiumDB article also says that La Bombonera has until 2021 to become an all-seater. That would bring its capacity down to just 34,000 people. Currently, only the east and west stands have seats, while the goal stands at the north and south are bare standing terraces.

Don't worry. Nothing will be built. In Argentina they don't have money nor the political will to make something happen. Everybody knows the Barras control the football in argentina and they will stop any new stadium plan. Not even a remodelation, because that's the way they like it.
