500 mist fans cool courtyards
of Makkah mosque in Ramadan

May 12, 2019

MAKKAH — As many as 500 mist fans were installed in the plazas of the Grand Mosque and on its roof to reduce the heat for Umrah pilgrims, worshippers and visitors who visit Makkah in large numbers during the holy month of Ramadan, the Arabic-language daily Makkah reported on Sunday.

The sprinkler fans, connected to pumps and water tanks, by spraying cool vapor on the worshippers will help bring down the heat by three to seven degrees Celsius.

According to the Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, the first phase of the project for installing mist fans in the plazas of the Grand Mosque was completed nine years ago while most of the courtyards and the roof were covered in two subsequent phases.

The presidency said the mist fans would start spraying automatically whenever the temperature rises above 30 degrees Celsius.

Ministry launches new website
for Qatari Umrah applicants

May 14, 2019

JEDDAH — The Ministry of Haj and Umrah announced on Tuesday that it has dedicated a new website (https://qtumra.haj.gov.sa) to receive Umrah visa applications from Qatari citizens who want to perform the pilgrimage, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The move comes after Qatari authorities blocked access to the previous website (https://qatariu.haj.gov.sa), which was dedicated to receive Umrah visa requests from the Qatari applicants.

The ministry’s decision comes within the framework of the keenness of the Saudi government to facilitate the procedures for the arrival of all pilgrims, as well as to overcome all obstacles that may face them while performing the ritual, SPA reported.

Sheikh Dr. Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi,
Makkah Grand Mosque imam

Sheikh Dr. Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi
May 17, 2019

Sheikh Dr. Faisal Jameel Ghazzawi is an imam at the Grand Mosque and the dean of the Da’awa and Fundamentals of Religion Faculty at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah.

Ghazzawi said in his latest Friday sermon that the faith of Muslims could not be complete without them having the best wishes and intentions toward other people.

He also called on Muslims to instigate good deeds and multiply them during the holy month of Ramadan, so that this practice became a habit they could not be rid of. He warned Muslims about social media sites becoming a distraction during Ramadan, and how these could lead them astray from diligence and hard work in a season meant for good deeds.

Ghazzawi was born in 1965. He majored in Qur’an recitation at Umm Al-Qura University and now holds a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in this field.

During his academic years, he dedicated his research material to Ibn Attiyah’s approach in presenting recitations and the impact of it on interpretation, and a segment of Ibn Al-Mulqin’s book about what makes a true mosque.

Ghazzawi lectured at Umm Al-Qura University from 1989 until 2004, when he climbed up the career ladder after obtaining his doctorate to be an associate professor until 2010.

He has served as an imam in Makkah’s mosques since 1993, and led prayers in some of the bigger mosques such as Al-Huda, becoming an imam at the Grand Mosque in 2007.

Mercury soars in Makkah,
other Saudi cities as hot summer closes in

May 18, 2019

JEDDAH —The temperature started soaring in all regions of Saudi Arabia and is expected to remain high for much of the next few months.

According to the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection, the temperatures hit 36 degrees Celsius in Jeddah, 38 degrees in Riyadh, 39 in Dammam and 40 in Hafr Al-Batin on Saturday. The hottest city in the Kingdom on the day was Makkah where the mercury rose to 41 degrees on the Celsius scale.

The weather authority also forecast thunderous rain and strong winds in Najran, Jazan, Asir, Baha, Riyadh, Qassim, Al-Jouf and the Northern Border provinces. It said the strong winds would kick up dust, considerably reducing visibility in these regions.

The authority said the surface winds in the Red Sea would gain speeds of between 18-40 km/h in the westerly to northwesterly direction.

Dr. Khaled Abdulaziz, a consultant in internal medicine, warned fasting people against exposing themselves to direct rays of the sun because this could lead to dehydration.

He advised them to consume lots of fluids after breaking the fast to compensate for the water loss during the day.

during the inauguration of the construction work of Al-Salam Museum in Madinah on Saturday.
May 18, 2019

MADINAH — Emir of Madinah region and Chairman of the Madinah Region Development Authority Prince Faisal Bin Salman launched on Saturday the construction work of Al-Salam Museum, west of the Prophet’s Mosque on a total area of 17,400 sq. meters.

The museum will have halls with a total area of 4,650 sq. meters.

The museum was initially launched by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman during his recent visit to Madinah.

Al-Salam Museum, the construction of which is expected to be completed in 12 months, aims at enriching the cultural experience for the Guests of Allah, the visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque.

The objective is also to highlight the efforts of the state in serving the two holy mosques.

Al-Salam Museum comes under the jurisdiction of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

In a speech on the occasion, the Head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques Sheikh Al-Sudais said: “We are all happy to present to the entire world a bright image of the values of Islam through Al-Salam Museum, which coincides with the World Day for Exhibitions and Museums. This is in tandem with the Kingdom’s great message to the world – to achieve global peace and security. Al-Salam Museum is a message of security, wellbeing and peace via Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, the Prophet’s City.”

Al-Salam Museum has 10 halls highlighting the notion of peace and its importance in a Muslim’s life.

The “Arrival to Madinah” hall speaks about the reason why the Prophet (peace be upon him) chose Madinah.

Other halls include the Prophet’s Mosque Hall that sheds light on the phases of the construction of the Prophet’s Mosque throughout the ages.

The hall for landmarks of the Prophet’s Mosque acquaints visitors with Al-Rawda Al-Shareef, Al-Minbar Al-Shareef and Al-Mihraab, among others.

Houthis try to target Makkah, Jeddah

Saudi air defense forces intercept, destroy two missiles

May 20, 2019

JEDDAH — Saudi air defense forces early Monday morning intercepted two Houthi ballistic missiles — one over Taif heading toward Makkah and the other over Jeddah, according to eyewitnesses.

The Kingdom’s air defense forces were able to destroy the ballistic missiles 60 km from Makkah. The missile debris fell in the Jallel valley that extends to Makkah.

This is the second time the Houthis are trying to target Makkah. The first time the Iranian-backed militias targeted the holy city was in July 2017.

Makkah is teeming with millions of pilgrims and visitors in the holy month of Ramadan.

“Pilgrims and worshipers are performing their rituals and prayers in peace and comfort,” said Khidr Al-Nifei, a worshiper.

He said the Saudi leadership is capable of protecting the Grand Mosque and visitors to Makkah so we are not at all worried.

Rajabur Rahman Saif, a Pakistani national, said these futile attempts by the Houthis and Iranians to target the Kingdom will not have an impact on the number of visitors and pilgrims.

Pakistan and its people stand by the Kingdom to defend the Qibla of Muslims and Saudi borders, he said.

He called it a provocative act for the feelings of Muslims all over the world.

In light of the attack, the Yemeni government said that it strongly condemns the Houthi attempt to target Makkah, adding that the attack on the holy site is “a full-fledged terrorist act”.

The Saudi air defense forces have so far destroyed 227 missile fired Houthis toward the Kingdom.

First phase of electronic track
for local pilgrims launched

May 20, 2019

RIYADH — The Ministry of Haj and Umrah has today (Monday) launched the first phase of the electronic track for domestic pilgrims to browse the programs and services being provided by 190 Haj service companies to about 227,000 pilgrims.

The ministry said pilgrims can view services and programs via electronic link: https://localhaj.haj.gov.sa

Deputy Minister Abdul Fattah Bin Solaiman Mashshat told Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that this phase is designated to explain the services and programs of the companies including charges.

He said the second phase will be for reservation and issuance of Haj permits starting Dhul Qa'da 1 (July 4).

Mashshat said this step comes within the ministry's efforts to provide consummate services and facilities to the pilgrims, achieve transparency between the two sides of the contract and closely monitoring all the programs and services extended to domestic pilgrims by the companies.

"This track will be the one and only means for reservation of the domestic pilgrims," he said.

He warned that any registration outside this track will be done by fake and unlicensed companies.

Faiz Al-Barakati, director of the ministry's department dealing with domestic pilgrims, said the track provides a number of services including the reservation to perform the Haj, issuance of Haj permits, determining the locations of tents in the holy sites, buying Hadi and Adhahi coupons, registering of pilgrims' children in nurseries and kindergartens and others.
