A bit of artistic license with settings there perhaps. I sort of assumed that all of the internal shots would be Amazon offices but, if I'm not mistaken, at time index 2:06 the solutions architect guy is walking through the new connecting bridge at the CTICC. So positive to have such a strong Amazon presence in CT though.

perhaps Amazons presence will alert Jeff B to the likes of Cape Town Film Studios for future Amazon programmes, seeing as he really wants to expand an compete with Netflix

Yamamay launches first retail store in South Africa

Trendy Italian underwear, clothing and swimwear brand, Yamamay on Monday said it had launched its first South African store at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria.

Gianluigi Cimmino, CEO Pianoforte Holding, which owns the Yamamay brand, said: "I’m very proud of this new opening in Pretoria.

"South Africa has long been a key destination for the world’s most sought-after fashion brands, and we believe that Yamamay’s introduction to the South African market is not only a significant step for the brand’s international footprint, but also brings South African consumers the calibre of international fashion they deserve."

The store launched with the latest lingerie and sleepwear from its exquisite spring/summer 2019 collection, as well as the coveted CR7 underwear collection by Cristiano Ronaldo.

"We are thrilled to introduce Yamamay’s latest underwear and sleepwear collections to South African men and women, just in time for spring."

"The arrival of Yamamay in SA brings local consumers closer to the global fashion scene, introducing a brand that is the perfect fit for South Africa’s most discerning shoppers who enjoy treating themselves to quality fashion from around the world," Yamamay spokesperson John Kainga said.

General manager at Mowana Properties, the owner of Menlyn Park,Olive Ndebele, said that Yamamay was a welcome addition to the many unique shopping experiences the centre offers.

"Menlyn Park shopping centre is a world-class shopping destination in South Africa, and home to some of the world’s biggest and most desirable brands.

We are delighted to welcome Yamamay to the Menlyn family, and proud to be chosen as the site of the first flagship store in the country," Ndebele said.

Yamamay doors will be opened on Wednesday with Stefano Ligrone, the first secretary in the office of the ambassador of Italy and Executives from the Pareto Group, as well as media and celebrity personalities in attendance.

Tigers South Africa opens Johannesburg e-commerce center

Today, Tigers South Africa, subsidiary of Hong Kong-based logistics company Tigers Logistics, announced the opening of an e-commerce center at its warehouse facility in Johannesburg, South Africa. The logistics provider said it invested in the center to support growing global e-commerce markets.

The center is equipped with an IT infrastructure connected to Tiger’s ScanPak, which allows staff to conduct scan checks while packing shipments and create waybills for packages. Together, the IT infrastructure and app are intended to ensure efficient operations at the facility. Following use of the app at this facility, it will roll out the use of the app at its Cape Town warehouse by the end of August, Tigers South Africa said.

“E-commerce is a key market for Tigers, particularly as digital technology and online retail continues to drive innovation in the logistics and supply chain sector,” said Tigers CEO Andres Jilings. “The new dedicated e-commerce center in South Africa is an important investment in the future direction of Tigers and is a testament to the hard work of the team in South Africa in developing the facility,” he continued.

The parent company has made major expansions since the start of the year, including doubling its storage capacity in Miami, adding cargo screening tech to its operations in Australia, and expanding its digitalized services as the launch customer for freight rate quote startup, Doozee.

Lots of interesting info here:

The big plan to turn Starbucks around in South Africa

Starbucks had a strong launch in South Africa in 2016, but has since become an unprofitable venture for local brand owner Taste Holdings – forcing the group back to the drawing board on its plan to take the US coffee brand to the wider local market.

Taste says that its new plan includes rapid expansion and a new operating model – which includes a milder coffee bean to ensure that the taste of the coffee isn’t as strong and bitter as before.

In its annual report for the 2019 financial year, Taste said that an in-depth analysis of its international brands (Starbucks and Domino’s Pizza) showed that the operating models for these brands were not optimal, which required a rethink.

Prior to the 2019 financial year, Starbucks stores were not generating the levels of sales in line with investment cases. And a review of the operating model showed that the international Starbucks business model was not entirely suited to local market conditions and consumer preferences.

“In response to these findings, we paused the rollout of new stores to focus on re-aligning our operating model to one that more accurately reflects the South African market realities and ensured maximum productivity by our operating partners,” it said.

In 2019, system-wide sales in Starbucks increased by 46% to R108 million (2018: R75 million) as a result of two additional stores being added to the network in 2019, taking the total store count to 12.

However, same-store sales (9 stores) declined by 19% to R51 million (2018: R62 million) due to a combination of constrained consumer spending and the settling of revenues post the brand launch honeymoon period, which is typified by exaggerated revenues, the group noted.

“The combined stores network is currently profitable at an EBITDA level. The focus is to grow store profitability through new store openings and margin improvements, to the point where profit contributions exceed the cost of the brand’s support and admin infrastructure, referred to as above store costs.

Taste’s new strategy with Starbucks involves setting up different types of outlets in targeted areas – while also fine-tuning the types of products it sells.

The group said as part of its new strategy it wants to establish Starbucks Café outlets to get sector dominance in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban. Here, it wants to open smaller, well-located stores with high visibility.

Most interesting, however, is that feedback from customers showed that South Africans generally don’t like the strong, bitter coffee that is widely used by the brand.

In the coming financial year (2020) Taste said it wants to add six more Starbucks stores in South Africa, with the plan to focus on core economic centres, specifically Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria.

The plan is to expand the Starbucks network to between 150 and 200 Starbucks, and within 7 – 8 years from the commencement of the plan, the businesses will be able to fund its network expansion from its own balance sheet and will no longer require capital injections.

Taste also says that the market potential over a 10-year period for Starbucks is between 200 to 300 cafés.

The numbers seem about right. 200-300 stores would put SA at a similar number to Thailand or Malaysia which have similar sized consumer markets and sophistication to SA.

Krispy Kreme reveals location of first Cape Town store

After over a year of waiting and teasing fans with announcements, the wait is officially nearly over as Krispy Kreme have finally announced their latest store location and opening date.

The international doughnut chain, which opened its first South African branch in 2015, will be opening its first Western Cape branch in September in the bustling, tourist-attracting location of the V&A Waterfront.

According to a Twitter and Instagram announcement by the doughnut giant, the new branch will be launched as soon as next month and will open its doors to fans on 10 September. This means that Mother City locals are mere days away from getting their hands on the famed glazed, sprinkled, and filled doughnuts, which will be served fresh from their new home at FC04 and FC05 at the V&A Waterfront (the food court near the amphitheatre).

Oracle to launch local servers in South Africa

Oracle has announced that it will launch 20 new data server regions by the end of 2020, bringing its total number of cloud infrastructure regions up to 36.

This expansion is focused on existing regions as well as countries in “geographically-separated” regions, which include Australia, India, Japan, and South Africa.

Oracle said it expects to open an average of one region every 23 days over the next 15 months for a total of 20 additional regions.

“As planned, 11 of the countries or jurisdictions served by local cloud regions will have two or more regions to facilitate in-country or in-jurisdiction disaster recovery capabilities,” said Oracle.

“Oracle’s Gen 2 Cloud Infrastructure makes this possible through highly-optimized region deployment technologies, which can implement an entire software-defined data center and customer-facing cloud services in days.”

The full list of regions scheduled for Oracle Cloud infrastructure deployment is below:

Netherlands
Australia
Brazil

Looks like SA's first Apple Store will be opening at the V&A

Via the Growthpoint annual report:

Quote:
Lettings at Waterway House improved year on year, and the redevelopment of the landmark Dock Road Junction (formerly the Amway building and the entrance to the V&A) was completed with good leasing progress, having secured Spaces by Regus. We are also very pleased to have secured the country’s first flagship Apple Store, due to open at the end of 2019.
