Yeah the map we saw that on showed it going where the hotel is planned IIRC. So it might be going in as ground floor retail or something. From what I remember the corner site was also pegged as having TSB Bank return to it.

I can't wait until these start, this'll be a huge jumpstart for this block of colombo st.

I guess, but if you estimate the width of those 2 buildings from the render, plus the 3rd corner site on Hereford St, it doesn’t quite look right.

I think that McDonald's is just south of the proposed hotel actually, maybe next door. They also own that site IIRC and with KFC commencing construction, surely they won't want to wait any longer either.

Will be great though to get this hotel, KFC and then TSB bank building on the corner underway - that stretch of Colombo Street definitely needs to be filled in. Once thats done, Colombo Street north from Tuam Street right up to Victoria Square will effectively be filled in - (Hoyts Entx, Bus Interchange, Ballantynes, Kiwibank, The Crossing, ANZ Centre, Kathmandu flagship store, McDonalds, hotel, KFC, TSB Bank, Aotea Gifts Shigeru Ban build, Spark building, (Cathedral), Turanga library, Convention Centre (hopefully Court Theatre - update coming 28 March I believe) and Crown Plaza.

Also, thanks for the render of the 79 Hereford St hotel voyager, looks like it will be a Sebel Hotel from the picture link so they have an operator lined up.

There is still the tooth missing next to Kiwibank on the corner of Lichfield.

(And what happened to the TSB - it's been ages...)

They should have made the kiwibank wider and build it to the corner. It's only a couple of metres at most of bare site.

This is a sad time for our city. Adversity has struck again. This extreme act of terror is something we would never expect to see in New Zealand, let alone in our peaceful city of Christchurch. My thoughts and condolences go out to the families of the 49 dead (unfortunately will likely rise) and all those injured. Compared to the attacks that have occurred overseas, we are a small community and we all likely know a family that has been affected by this.

However, there is nothing stopping our spirit - after all that we have been through hundreds and thousands of earthquakes, flooding, the Port Hills fire and now this extreme terrorist attack within 9 years - if one city can band together, support our Muslim community and rise together stronger, it is Christchurch, New Zealand.

Kia Kaha Christchurch - This is not who we are!

Yes, I was just over 1km away from the scene when this was unfolding, and watching the various news feeds over the first few hours was, while serious, still looked like a nut-job may have killed a "few"...

It was only when PM Jacinda Ardern stated... "40 dead" did it dawn just the sheer scale of what had happened.

Sadly, as it's been pointed out previously, the haunts of terror have finally reached our shore, and done so in what I'd have to say is a pretty overwhelming fashion... and while in a different way, as overwhelming for a city as the 'quakes were of 2011.

The human toll last Friday is stark...

The Chch Mosque attack, if happened on US soil, would be second equal to the worst mass-shooting attack on US soil in modern times... equal with the Orlando Florida shootings, and second to the Las Vegas shootings.

The Chch Mosque attack, globally would be in the Top 10 worst mass-shooting event from a single individual.... EVER... (we'll at least in modern recorded history of say 100 years).

In terms of scale... NZ has a population of about 4.9 million, and in 2001, the United States had a population of 285 million. If one scales up the fatalities based on population to that of the US population, then we'd arrive at 2908 lives lost... which is uncannily close to the 2996 lives lost in the Sept 11 attacks in the US...

It's no wonder that this event has had such a dramatic and devastating effect on this small little country that nobody thought could ever happen here.

It goes without saying, that at this time, my thoughts go out to our Muslim community.

Appalling, heart-breaking, horrific tragedy. Innocent lives lost for no reason. The people of Manchester can relate to the pain I'm sure Christchurch will be feeling as a community at these sad times. You never imagine it's going to hit so close to home. Stay strong, good will always prevail. Thought and prayers with all the victims, sending love to the other side of the world!
