Prague: WORK ON METRO D ABOUT TO START

The first steps for building the Metro D line connecting the city center with the city’s southern neighborhoods is about to start. City Hall expects to start work on the long-planned fourth metro line in two months. The first phase of the line will extend from Pankrác to Nové Dvory.

Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) said that starting the geological survey for the metro line is a coalition goal for the first half of this year. The tunnels created for the survey will also serve as a basis for construction, he added.

The project a big step forward March 18 when the city reached an agreement with landowners that would be affected by the metro stop at Nádraží Krč. The agreement calls for the property owners to drop their legal attempts to block the construction of the metro line.

“It is a great success, I have worked on the agreement since joining City Hall. This will open the way to the construction of the first stage of the new Metro D line from Pankrác to the planned Nové Dvory station. Behind the agreement are intense successful negotiations by the city and the Prague Public Transit Company and a constructive approach by the land owners,” Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), responsible for transport, said on the City Hall website.

The withdrawal of a second legal case by Arkády Pankrác last week was also confirmed by Scheinherr.

After dealing with the remaining claims of several owners, nothing will be in the way of the geological survey, and it is expected to start in about two months, Scheinherr added.

Another agreement has been concluded by City Hall concerning the planned Nemocnice Krč stop. The agreement will enable landowners to build their own projects at the underground part of the metro and at the entrance and exit of the station.

In the vicinity of Nádraží Krč stop, between the highway segment Jižní spojka, V Podzámčí Street and the railway line, residential houses and administrative buildings should grow. In the western part of the area, the owners want to build hotels.

“The central part should be a park with water features, so passengers can get out of the subway into a pleasant environment. We also expect the P + R car parking lot to be built for drivers,” Scheinherr said.

Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib was pleased with the progress. “As promised in the coalition program, the launch of Metro D construction is a crucial step for us to address the long-term transport problems that our capital is suffering. I am extremely pleased that thanks to the quality of the work of the deputy mayor for transport, Adam Scheinherr, we are actually getting a little closer to starting the construction of Metro D,” Hřib said.

According to City Hall, the first section of Metro D between Pankrác to Nové Dvory, should be put into operation by the end of 2027.

The Metro D line has faced numerous delays. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2010. There was a petition in 2016 to change the approved designs for the stations between Pankrác to Písnice because the designs are already outdated, and do not reflect current trends in mass transit.

Even at the time they were made, they used ideas from the 1990s and not the 2000s, according to the petitioners. The stations were designed in 2009 by eight architects working for the construction firm Metroprojekt.

The city administration at the time largely rejected the petition as any significant changes would require the permit process to start over again, which could add years of further delays. Only cosmetic changes are possible.

Design changes can still be made to the planned Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Bratří Synků stations, as they do not yet have their final permits.

Prague Metro D stations to get new designs

The entire line of stations in the planned Metro D will get new designs.

The Prague City Council said that artist David Vávra will oversee creating common elements to unify the stations.

Artises will be selected by a commission with representatives of Prague City Hall, the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP), Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Praha), the National Gallery and construction firm Metroprojekt Praha.

The overall structure of the stations, though, can’t change, as zoning and other permits have been issued. Changing the permits would potentially cause years of delay.

“I took over Metro D at a stage where it is no longer possible to interfere with the architectural form of the stations, but we have found a way to create a new visual style.

Our goal is to make every station a place of high artistic value where Prague citizens will feel comfortable. The new line will not end up like the last Metro A stations,” Prague Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě) said.

Artists for each station will be approached by Metroprojekt Praha in cooperation with the National Gallery. For each metro station, Metroprojekt Praha will ask for multiple art designs, from which the commission will select the winning designs. These will be incorporated into the project documentation.

The task of architect and artist David Vávra will be to coordinate the selection process and help find elements that can create a new visual design. The commission will decide on the selection itself. “David Vávra should also take care of the unified identity of the line so that it is clear at every single station which line the passenger is on. This is how the first sections of lines A, B and C were built in the center of Prague,” David Krása, CEO of Metroprojekt Praha, said. Common elements for the station furniture will come from a separate design competition.

“Currently, a commission is being set up to deal with the visual appearance of the individual stations. This competition, as it is an architecturally finished station, will have three to five participants who should already be articulate in the existing expression of the stations. Invited authors should come from across generations,” Vávra said.

The selection will be divided into three phases. As part of the first phase, an artistic solution will be prepared for the planned Pankrác station. The design documentation for Olbrachtova and Pankrác stations needs to be completed as early as summer 2019. The proposals will then be prepared by the commission.

At the Olbrachtova station, where it is necessary to prepare the project documentation by July 2019, the commission will select artists as one of its first tasks.

In the second phase, proposals for Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč and Nové Dvory will be created with project documentation planned for December 2020.

As part of the final phase, the commission will prepare proposals for the remaining Libuš, Písnice, Depot Písnice and Náměstí Míru stations, which will be resolved after the optimization of the design for the Pankrác – Nové Dvory section has been completed.

At the Náměstí Bratří Synků station, the design will include an architectural competition, as the zoning permit has not been issued.

A petition in September 2016 asked the city to completely redesign the Metro D stations, as the original designs were already outdated when they were selected. The petition maintains that the metro stations at the time they were designed did not reflect current trends in urban design, but instead are based on postmodern architectural ideas from the 1990s. The stations were designed in 2009 by eight architects working for Metroprojekt.

Those already outdated designs from 2009 are now 10 years old.

But the city in 2016 said that only cosmetic changes could be made at that point, and the new administration is maintaining that stance.

Metro D is a planned subway line that will connect the city center to neighborhoods in the southern part of the city that now has poor public transportation options. The trains will be driverless.

Construction originally was set to begin in 2010, and that was moved to 2012.

Construction is now supposed to start this year.

Metro To Otopeni – Auction For Line 6th Suspended

New delays for the Metro line to Otopeni: The auction for the structure of May 1 – Tokyo section of Metro Line 6th has been suspended, although Wednesday was the last day for the submission of bids.
Reportedly the reason is an appeal filed on Tuesday by Strabag, the largest construction company in Romania, according to digi24.ro.
On March 15, Metrorex published the call for tender for the design and execution of the structure of the May 1 – Tokyo section of the 6th Metro Line. The value of the contract is estimated at RON 1.27 billion, and the duration of building the tunnels and the 6 stations will be four years.
In total, the investment in the 6th Metro Line, which will have 14 kilometres and will include 12 stations, and in the acquisition of the 12 trains will reach RON 1.3 billion.
According to the Metrorex current estimates, the metro line to the airport should be completed in November 2023.
