Great effort, Jan, thanks!

I take it from this, though, that VerticalScope is completely capable of screwing things up, and completely incapable of cleaning up their own mess. Sounds a bit like my five year old.

I asked VerticalScope to look into this and provide us with the answer on what is causing this and how they can prevent this from happening again. Until then, I don't think it's much use spending a lot of time again on manually adding anchor tags. Ideally, they can set them back for us.

The reward you get for cleaning up other people's mess is never long-lived. As I said, VS reminds me of my five year old.

Just have a look into this post.
That should deliver a workaround.
When and if the techs will solve this issue can not be said...

do embedded tweets / images from twitter not show up for anyone else on this site?

if it's an image it just shows up as a red x / broken image - clicking view image will allow me to view it (full size on the twimg.com)

if it's an embedded then I am just out of luck. not sure what the issue is because on other sites this isn't a problem.

sorry if this has been asked before.

Perhaps this has something to do with Firefox.
Firefox and/or its add-ons and/or its extenions sometimes block Twitter tweets somehow.
If you use Firefox try to play with your add-ons and/or extensions or try to use Edge or Internet Explorer.

How do you change your editor? I see further up thread a suggestion to switch to the standard editor to deal with the quoting problem, but I can't see where I can change my editor. I can't even see what editor I'm using.

The problem I have when I try to quote is that it tries to bring in the entire page, not just the post I'm trying to quote. The back button also doesn't work after doing this, so I have to navigate back to the page again through the interface.

Could you please disable the option to select the Polish language in the bottom panel:

?

It's quite a problem in the Polish SSC section – as the Polish version of the forum encodes Polish diacritics incorrectly and if someone switches the forum to Polish, his newly added posts are full of weird characters:

┼, ─, ╝ and ™ are not correct Polish diacritics. The Polish diacritics look like this: ę, ˇ, ą, ś, ł, ż, ź and ń (+ their uppercase equivalents).

┼ is a correct diacritic in some Nordic languages (there is also a town in Norway the name of which consists only of this single letter), ─ – in quite many European languages but definitely not in Polish. I don't think ╝ and ™ are used as diacritics in any language.

The Polish language pack was taken down from the site some times ago because it caused different issues for example with other language packs.
I checked some of those issues if they came up again but this is not the case up to now.
Perhaps Jan knows how to handle those character issues.

Hello moderation and administration.

I would like to know your opinion about this problem.

You gonna waste exacly the same time doing it.

This is exactly what I do, a summary, not an exact copy of all existing content, so you can check all updates without having to enter the specific pages of each project, but if you are so interested in seeing more content about a specific project you just need to click the title that I put in each project post.

This is why the pages dedicated to each project exist.

But if you guys have any problem with that I can start posting all photos on this topic duplicating the content.

Thank you.
Best regards

I already explained the reasons before.

The Polish language pack uses the ISO-8859-2 encoding to display Polish characters in the user interface. The character encoding setting in HTML (or in HTTP, where it's also possible) unfortunately applies to the whole website, so also to the contents of the posts.

In the English language version, the encoding in the HTML source is set to ISO-8859-1. Because this character set does not contain most Polish diacritics, the forum software reacts to Polish characters placed in the fields of the new post form in such a way that it converts them to HTML entities. See this fragment of the source:

It just so happens that ˇ is included in the ISO-8859-1 character set, but no other lowercase Polish diacritic characters are.

If someone has the Polish language pack active, the Polish characters in newly added posts are encoded just with ISO-8859-2. Therefore, when someone has the English version on (so he uses ISO-8859-1), he incorrectly sees the characters posted by the Polish version users. The web browser of such user is informed by the META tag in the source code of the forum that all the content of the website is encoded in ISO-8859-1, which actually isn't true as some posts are encoded in ISO-8859-2.

One possible solution would be to modify the Polish language pack so that it would use the ISO-8859-1 encoding with the Polish characters in the interface encoded as entities. Should be doable. But it would have to be repeated in case of any update of the language pack.

Another one would be converting the whole forum to UTF-8, which is a modern encoding standard, including almost all languages; actually not only just languages (even the poop emoji is there). Yet more languages are included e.g. in UTF-16. However, I am not sure but I think it may require converting the whole posts database, which is likely to take time because of its size.

One may also come up with an idea of switching the whole forum (all the language versions) to ISO-8859-2 – but it's not a solution because it would break the diacritics from some other languages, like that "a" with a circle above it, or even "a umlaut". If I am not mistaken, ISO-8859-2 also contains all German characters – but "a umlaut" must be on a different position in the set, so even this would break. Definitely not a solution.

The simplest workaround is just to disable the Polish pack. We really don't need it in the Polish section.
