Old rockers Deep Purple touring the Big 5 next autumn (FDA October 6), supported by Blue Oyster Cult. Those councillors in South York’s who objected to regional funding going towards the Leeds Arena city centre project are increasingly being proven correct that it would adversely affect their grey shed on that industrial estate

Sod them.

Those South Yorkshire councillors can eat a faeces sandwich.

absolutely spot on! I think the redevelopment of merrion way and the emerging towers in Leeds really make Sheffield's arena look seriously below par.

To be fair, Sheffield is the 7th busiest UK arena this year. Leeds just behind in 8th. The current "big 4" is Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham(s) and Nottingham! The O2 is way down (due to the nature of the events rather than sales probably)

Weirdly, each of Birmingham's arenas are doing over 300k sales mid-year. Leeds and Sheffield are on 180k ish

Love to know where you get these figures from as the latest Pollstar rankings for the top 200 arenas worldwide which were last published at the end of 2018 show:

Leeds ranked 32nd busiest in the world at 487,700
Sheffield ranked at 70th in the world at 254,923
and Nottingham at 85th in the world at 204,106

As you can see Leeds Arena delivering almost double the visitors of Sheffield !!

Sheffield was taking custom out of the Leeds city region. They were ripping us off for years.

I took a look at the Polestar website and they produce all sorts of reports for all manner of venues. One of this reports is a half-year update on how arenas are performing. Those figures are correct but I don’t know that you can draw much from them. After all, as already mentioned, the O2 ranks quite low at this point in the year. So, no need for us to get hot under the collar.

They’re from the mid year 2019 Pollstar top 200 arena stats. The more up to date Q3 release has Leeds 62nd slightly ahead of Sheffield and Notts.

Leeds was ranked 32nd 2018.

Didn't realise they were out. Cheers

62. 239,074 First Direct Arena Leeds, UK $15,182,352
63. 237,337 Motorpoint Arena Nottingham Nottingham, UK $13,254,287
64. 235,855 The SSE Arena Belfast Belfast, UK $14,336,465
65. 231,701 FlyDSA Arena Sheffield, UK $14,198,479

I think the year "ends" in November, and Leeds has been relatively busy the last few weeks, so I expect it should top this best-of-the-rest mini-league when it's all tallied up, for those of you who to whom it means so much! Still way behind the big 4 arena markets though

The National this Sunday

You can see just with the recent bookings how the calibre of acts coming to Leeds is definitely on the up though. The arena has a bright future.

Shed 7 last night blew the roof off. Brilliant.

Jon McClure Sheffield front man from support act Reverend and The Makers stated in their set that this arena was better than the Sheffield one! Bold claim.

Oh they were brilliant as well.

Morrissey to play Leeds Arena on 6th March. Doesn't appear to be playing at the MEN, interestingly.

He didn't play Manchester on his last tour either. I think he's the type of guy who loves to make things difficult for this fans... still, it was great seeing him in Leeds last time and the train home was like an extension of the concert

I would expect us to overtake Sheffield in the near future, its a really tired venue. Does this include sporting events? Just thinking Sheffield for example must have fairly reasonable attendences for the Steelers ice hockey team?

I think the Pollstar data refers only to mainstream tours. So "sport" like the Harlem Globetrotters, WWE or ArenaCross count, but a boxing card or sports tenancy doesn't. I'm only guessing though

Liverpool for example probably languishes at about 150 in the world with under 100k ticket sales with Pollstar, but is in reality getting a lot more through the door with its boxing, netball etc.

It seems a pretty volatile industry anyway. Manchester used to do a million a year and is down nearly a third on those highs. Maybe Leeds' ticket sales are dropping off a bit now everyone is used to it? Personally I always thought Leeds' generally good performance vs other similar markets was down to better ticket sales, rather than better/more bookings

Elsewhere in the Pollstar stuff Roundhay Park gets into the top 20 odd outdoor sites with about 160k sales, thanks to enduring 2 nights of Sheeran. There's so much competition for summer stadium gigs that Elland Road and Headingley are realistically so far down the pecking order that they're not even in the game. If Roundhay could offer 6-figures a night for 2 or 3 weekends a year you could potentially double the arena's sales pretty easily
